I have no clue, I think it must be assumptions based on popularity of how the name is used or context or something. Like if I see the name Jean, my brain will pronounce it differently if I know the gender of the person whose name it is but technically I don’t know how they pronounce it until they say it to me.

- Read the second-last essay, on impermenance and Kyoto, which I liked but was getting a headache while reading due to various factors. One more essay left, though it’s a doozy.
- Read another chapter and decided to DNF セックスの誘い方 because I didn’t feel like I was really enjoying it enough for the effort. It also kind of started as a serious-presenting manga about dating and relationships (or just looking for sex friends as an adult), but rapidly turned into sort of comedy one-offs which wasn’t really what I was looking for…
- Continuing casually reading 妄想先生 which is pretty funny. It’s such a funny turn from the previous series from this author I read which was aggressively kid-focused, whereas this feels almost like they had a well of smutty jokes they wanted to make the whole time. Funnily enough their character design is almost exactly the same still (aside from the age range being much higher)…

Finished 鬼隠し! There was less left than I expected, and got into a bit of a roll with it. I’d unfortunately spoiled the end for myself a bit, but it was still very good. As a whole as my first VN experience, I think I picked a good one to start with. Steam is telling me I spent 21 hours on it or something, but at least 4 or 5 of those are it sitting in the background, so I have no idea how much actual playtime I spent on it - maybe 15-16 hours or so. Still got many more chapters left to go to the finish of the whole thing…
(Currently trying to fight the urge to start another VN at the same time because I’ll have too many things going on at once if I do that… but look how free my currently reading list looks! Especially when I finish more books soon!)
Didn’t get into 六人の嘘つきな as much today, just felt long. Will try again tomorrow to get through the rest of this (chunky) chapter.
Read quite a lot of 思い出. It’s getting a bit better, and I think this final chapter will end up being the best one. I’m reading it pretty quickly, probably a page every 1min15s or so, but it still feels so long, with each chapter of this being like 100 pages of lots and lots of repetition which this author loves to do,
It depends on the games you play. Games aimed at children will have not many kanji and probably furigana above every word written in kanji. No idea about old games I never have time to replay any. The games I play usually don’t have words written in katakana beside the ones always written in katakana.

This scroll is pretty awesome, it is about a monk who willingly travels through several layers of hell in order to rescue his mother from demons who have kidnapped her soul.
He’s like a Kamakura-era Doomslayer
Started playing ゆるキャン△ on the Switch today and got around 26 minutes in. The last time I tried to play it I failed horribly since I didn’t expect it to be Furigana-less, but now I wanted to give it another shot since it’s been some time and it works out good enough!
I guess in theory I also know the story already, so it shouldn’t be too hard to figure stuff out. Also the Characters except the main character also have a voice over so far, which feels like cheating, but since there are text only elements maybe it counts? For sure a nice change of pace!

A little Grisaia VN today. Still in the common route. This is a looong VN!
Finished the true ending of Misao today, and with this I think I finished the whole game. It was interesting and I feel like I’ve learned a lot from it.
Back to reading manga tomorrow I guess.

I don’t know about this particular case, but the schools I worked in always produced student lists with a collumn including the reading of the names and I was led to believe that this was one of the reasons. Forms and the like always have boxes to write the furigana and the kanji when you write your name as well. With names there are so many readings that are used it’s often not going to be easy to guess which one is likely. Of course, if the person is in front of you you can ask them, but this isn’t always the case.
Hmm, I see, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was under the impression that when a character would be first introduced they would show furugana for the name, but it wasn’t the case in the game. Maybe it was a really popular reading for that combination of characters and it was assumed that everyone would read it like that, or maybe I’m just missing something else.
I guess the more I think about it, the less weird it seems. I don’t talk to people much, and even I’ve asked people in English how to say their name

Read:
・13 pages of 不機嫌な青春, leaving off on pg 99
Ah, so it’s not that they’re psychically linked, but that one of them is constantly (involuntarily) telepathically projecting the physical sensations he experiences (e.g. pain, upset stomach, temperature, pressure) to those around him. Also the other MC is. not a good person either, though I’m certain it’s in no small part due to how his mother treats him. He’s very spoiled, but he’s also extremely coddled and has no privacy, ever, and I’m pretty sure the first is to “make up” for the other two. It’s quite horrifying, actually.
This MC, Iori, has a condition where he can’t feel things like pain or temperature. Once when he was little, he grabbed a knife by the blade and hurt himself because, without the ability to feel pain, he doesn’t have the instinct that tells him something’s wrong and to drop it. Now, even as a 中一, when he’s old enough to know logically not to touch the blade, he’s still not allowed to handle knives (scissors either, for that matter) at all. Instead of teaching him how to properly handle knives, his mother has all his food pre-cut into bite-sized pieces, even though there’s very little danger of injuring oneself while using a knife and fork normally to cut food.
(Yes. Has it cut. They’re rich and have maidservants and everything.)
Apparently his physical senses being dulled if not outright nonexistent also means he has trouble walking properly and is at a greater risk of tripping and/or falling down, so even though his legs are fully functional, she has him confined to a wheelchair. But how much of that is actually because of his condition, and how much is because she never let him actually properly learn how to walk?
She’s so scared of him getting even the smallest cut that she has him undergo a full-body examination at least once per day, and he’s filmed 24/7, even in the bathroom. Cameras cover his entire bedroom and bathroom, leaving no blindspots. There’s even one inside the toilet? He said that even his butt hair gets filmed—or it would, if he were old enough to have grown any.
This boy gets absolutely zero privacy, and very little autonomy, either. It’s like the only time he gets treated as a person is when his mother’s treating him as a helpless infant. He’s not! There are some things where it’s for the best if he doesn’t attempt them, and others where he’ll need to be more cautious and aware of what he’s doing, but he’s hardly helpless. But his mother acts as if he is and puts a blanket ban on anything that could potentially cause even the smallest injury.
But, oh, his parents bought him one of every single video game system and video game released to date, and his mother will sometimes find kids to come over and be his friend (though none of them last very long), so it’s okay. It’s little wonder he’s turned into the kind of kid who refers to a 17-y.o. girl as an old hag and doesn’t really see others as human. He’s not really treated as an autonomous human or allowed to be a kid to the extent that he’s able, either.
Yabuta is I guess his live-in doctor? and will do experiments with Hitsugi (psychic kid, 中三), having Hitsugi touch various things and seeing how Iori experiences the sensations vicariously, but doesn’t have him do any actually dangerous things, which Iori looks down on him for because Yabuta is afraid of pain (as Iori sees it). Absolutely zero concern for Hitsugi, who’d have to experience/perform these dangerous things first-hand. Iori thinks of him not as a playmate but a plaything (友だちじゃなくて玩具).
And of course, when they’re not doing these experiments, they all keep Hitsugi totally isolated away from them, away the main house, because of his psychic abilities. While Iori gets infantilized, Hitsugi gets dehumanized.
I hope their relationship changes over the course of this, and they can bond and become actual friends.
jfc Iori burns the inside of his mouth eating a slice of still-piping-hot custard pie because no one made him wait until it had cooled (or, y’know, thought to not serve it until it was sufficiently cooled???) (the fresher it is, the better the texture, to Iori), and when his mother found out, she forced Hitsugi’s mouth open and very nearly poured boiling water into it! Instead what she did was pinch the tip of his right index finger with radio pliers. (The scene cut off there, but I’m assuming she ripped out all his fingernails like Iori did to his own before because one of them broke, and tearing off that one was fun enough that he did the rest on that hand. She said she wanted to teach him just how much he should not do that again. They really do not treat Hitsugi like a person, wtf, he doesn’t deserve that. I feel ill.) This woman should not be allowed to have power/authority over anyone, wtf
I need to read something else after this, actually…

The art is beautiful, the story is sweet, everyone looks cuddleable, and then the little reveal at the end of the chapter? Just . Thanks to @mitrac for recommending in their log.
Oooh so glad to hear you like it and this manga is getting some well-deserved love !!
