Didn’t read as much as I thought I would in April. I mostly read easy stuff (Comprehensive Japanese video transcripts, NHK Easy, etc.) but it was still something. I finally got back into reading harder stuff and I just finished a few pages of Flying Witch!

More yotsuba this evening.
Had a lazy end of the month and almost forgot that I was doing this at all. I might do more listening for some time to switch things up.
May 1st
Book reading today - a half chapter each of 時間割男子 1 and 木曜日にはココアを to get up to date with the Natively book clubs. Two very different books, but I enjoy them both!

Played Mad Father for 2,5 hours today. I’m finding lots of new words. It feels very rewarding when I can solve puzzles in Japanese, even if I have to rely on the dictionary sometimes ![]()

April is already gone! It wasn’t really Japanese-oriented for me, but I still managed to read about 1 hour a day in average, hurray!
薬屋のひとりごと7: 52.57% → 64.18%, 1h47m
Another couple of chapters. It was fun! I think that I’m getting back into it.

Yeah so I think I know why I rarely have more than a couple books in active rotation. Even when I have the time/energy, my brain doesn’t want to switch between so many books in a day. So instead of trying to read from all of them, I’ll sorta cycle through them. If I don’t read one one day, I’ll try to read it the next. Then hopefully none will get left on the wayside for weeks or months on end, like the Belgariad… (I’ve got 6 novels currently, 3 in EN and 3 in JP. And the Belgariad I accidentally let sit for who even knows how long with 8 pages left of the first book… [it’s an omnibus, so I didn’t realise how little I had left])
Read:
・13 pages of 不機嫌な青春, finishing ch 2 and leaving off on pg 40
・ROBOT × LASERBEAM 44th~46th round
There was a big buff guy who cross-dressed in order to creep in the women’s bath, and there’s absolutely no reason for it either. Fujimaki could have come up with literally any other reason for Ginrou to show off his swing before we see him on the green, but no, it’s gotta be a transphobic bogeyman :/
Yeah, at least over here in the U.S. it’s primarily the women’s bathroom (トイレ) rather than the women’s bath (風呂), but it’s not like changing rooms and the ilk aren’t also a concern, it’s merely that the most stink is made over トイレ, but the fact that it’s 女湯 here doesn’t make it any better. And that he’s big/muscular/masculine is just the icing on the cake, since people love pointing at trans men who pass and look similar or at least who have facial hair and go, “You don’t want a trans man who looks like that in the women’s bathroom, do you?” No. Nor do they want trans women, or intersex women, or cis women who aren’t feminine enough or the right kind of feminine, or enbies or GNC folks even if they have the “right” parts. And none of them are welcome in the men’s restroom, either! That’s the entire point. Policing what kind of women are allowed in the women’s restroom just because a few men might disguise themselves as women to perv/commit sexual assault when they could much more easily just walk right in as-is to do it just causes more harm than good.
(They’re in a large facility that has not only baths, but a food court, izakaya, arcade, massage parlour, and indoor rock-climbing after a tournament, to eat and celebrate Robo-kun’s win. It’s also decorated with various art pieces and potted plants. Ginrou’s coincidentally there as well and sorta gets dragged in/drags himself in. While in the food court, they hear screams from the women’s bath, and out runs the transphobic bogeyman. Ginrou asks if anyone has a golf ball on them—spouting some BS about how a golfer should always have a golf ball on them, even though he doesn’t himself—and luckily Tomoya still has one that he’d forgotten to put away, so Ginrou borrows that as well as a broom off a passing janitor, which he uses to to send the ball flying into a suit of armour, knocking it over on top of the bogeyman as he runs past it, thereby stopping him from getting away.
(Was there really any need for it to be that situation specifically??)

today’s nhk article was this one (those flood diversion chambers under saitama)
edit: i was gonna read more priory but then got thoroughly distracted trying to find a (jp) quote at the start of the next section. it was from the 万葉集 and i did eventually find it (highlighted section is relevant lines):
eng translation (the one used in the book):

Counting the transcript I read to check listening as today’s mandatory read, though I intend to do some more actual reading later.
One and a half chapter of あの子の子ども and one chapter ふらいんぐうぃっち. Right into Volume 6 from あの子の子ども now. Finally back on track again with my actual reading program and not just jumping from one read to another which feels quite good.

Read the next chapter of the 往生要集 which was all about the hell-like realms that exist outside of the main 8 layers of hell and instead exist in places between all the other realms, one of them was called ‘The Realm of Hungry Souls’.
