Week 2 and 3 update for the Spring Reading Challenge
April 8 - 21
I missed three days the last 2 weeks because of a social event. But that’s okay. I’m getting back to my routine now since getting back.
Here’s what I read for Weeks 2 and 3:
2 episodes of Dr. Dru’s stories
5 episodes of the Jammaker on Satorireader
2 weeks of Little Granny Hinata Chan (Week 4 and 5)
XX number of pages of La Ciudad de las Bestias (reading on kindle and forgot to take note)
1 episode of Spanish for False Beginners podcast transcript
I think I need to really amp up my grammar studies because there are a lot of grammar points I still need to look up while reading the Jammaker and Little Granny Hinata Chan. I get the gist of most of what I’m reading but I don’t fully understand the grammar and why it’s been used.
This week I’m participating in a scientific meeting remotely. There were technical problems delaying the start of one of the sessions, which became reading time!
FINISHED 不思議駄菓子屋1! My second book! Not sure I will keep at this series, maybe if I see it on sale or something. Really not a fan of the amount of hirigana being used instead of kanji. I want to go on and try another book at my own pace next maybe, I think week to week is a bit slow for me too.
Started noodling around with Yuru Camp 2 randomly, will pick away at it here and there.
Think the week’s reading for Witch Hat Atelier 1 is on the agenda tomorrow.
Napped super hard today and didn’t have as much time to read as I wanted
I finished Ch. 8 of Atelier and it ended with such a big flurry of excitement, I can’t wait to see what happens next. It feels like the plot is only now starting to deepen further
More VA-11 Hall-A! Watching Jill interpret what her customers want to drink while I’m trying to interpret what both Jill and her customers are saying is definitely an interesting journey.

ちょろい = simple
ヒリヒリ = burning, stinging
オシッコ = childish word for pee
ゆったり = comfortable
ホワイト = white. I’ve got to remember that ホ at the beginning. ホワイトナイト are important to the story and it’s going to make reading difficult if I have to look this up every time. I’m going to try to remember a very thick british accent for this one.
落ちこぼれ = dropout, but tagged as sensitive on jisho
ほどほど = 程々 = moderate
書類仕事 = paperwork
会計監査 = audit
爆発 = explosion. Hey there’s kanji for the thing I’ve heard so much of from konosuba lol
臓器 = internal organs (omg I’m supposed to learn this soon)
idk how many pages it was (30 smth) but i finished すきとも! and, hm. in terms of vibes and writing style i really liked it, it had quite a cosy feel, but outside of that there wasn’t a great deal there imo? in terms of like character development. maybe i was asking more from it than it had to give. the 解説 at the back describes it as a little like a travelogue and i think that’s fair. good as a palate cleanser read but probably not something to rush to read should probably add a blurb to natively tho, i’ll do that after
today’s nhk article was this one (very short), and the entries on となる and となると in aDoIJG
words that stood out
すきとも:
否応なく - whether one wants to or not
歴然 - evident, plain, distinct
ぐっしょり - soaking (wet), dripping, drenched.
帳場 - (hotel) reception
雨足 - passing rain shower
燦々 - brilliant, bright. inexplicably written as 燦燦, ig this is a personal preference thing
Lots of reading today! 1500 characters from Island, a chapter from Flying Witch and a chapter from Little Granny Girl Hinata Chan. Trying to catch up with all the book clubs!
薬屋のひとりごと volume 11, 11 pages. I finished chaper 3 \o/
So proud of me. When I first began to read this light novel, I felt like lost in a sea of words, but now most of it makes sense. I still need yomitan of course, but 11 pages ! It’s unbelievable when a few months ago I could only read 2 pages before quitting from exhaustion
it’s fantastic how good progress feels and how quickly (relatively to eg a lifespan) it happens. I am wondering what the speed of improvement is on read everyday vs read once a week (eg book clubs) … sounds like a @mitrac data experiment maybe lol.
(I’m still too scared of that level of LNs just yet, but working my way there)
Totally ! We want the data @mitrac
I accept to become your guinea pig if needed^^
If I can do it, you can totally do it too
(I’m doing it because I love the story and I want to read the continuation, but my actual comfortable reading level is about 23-24 on Natively, I’d say)
