I was out and about yesterday for a friend’s birthday celebration and didn’t get much done, but did get to try out the single japanese rhythm game located in my city!
For some reason, our quarter token arcade downtown has a single ancient pop’n music cabinet tucked away in the back corner behind all the pinball machines. I’ve never seen a single person play it, and I’d never really played pop’n before because it’s a pretty old game. This cab only had like 15 songs unlocked, which was kind of a bummer, but I played for like 2-3 hours while friends went around and played other ticket games and pinball. Every time they circled back around to where I was, they’d be like “oh, you’re hitting more notes now”
(i was not this good)
Pop’n is one of those games that you look at it and you’re like “oh, this is a childrens game made for children, look at how cute the big buttons are and all the cute lil almost sanrio character designs” and then it turns out to be among the highest skill ceiling and highest precision rhythm games ever made. Really just a cruel joke
Today was much more mellow:

I’ve been reading two episodes a day in forever and still so much to go. And there are different styles (news style, “normal” style, casual speech style) plus different levels of reading, so even after having used it for so long I’m still getting value out of it!
there was a while it felt like every third day NHK would have something on JAXA space exploration. it’s kind of fun to learn stuff like 衛星 or 隕石 in context!
I didn’t get much done today, partly from the stress of an asian hornet getting inside my home. I noticed the nest in the porch yesterday, but the authorities only remove them during weekdays. I hope they’ll be able to come tomorrow

So I didn’t read anything in the traditional sense on Saturday and yesterday I didn’t read at all, but all but 3-4h of my awake time was spent listening and speaking Japanese so I don’t feel bad about not reading a book
read a full 36 pages of すきとも which was probably slightly too many but i got really into it. kind of curious where it’s going to end up cos it kinda seems like it’s not really going to end up anywhere as part of that ended up reading this article on the difference between 最中 and 最中 (and 最中 but that was just a happy accident).
today’s nhk article was this one, plus the entry on ところが and とも in aDoIJG
words that stood out
すきとも：
平生 - usual, ordinary
初老 - past middle-age, nearing old age
シャボン玉 - bubble. was used in シャボン玉セット which seems to be for blowing bubbles
ギャザー - gather (dressmaking, e.g. gathered skirt)
いざゆかん - now, let us go (formal, literary. was in a newspaper article headline)
怪訝 - puzzled, perplexed. something else with the 怪 reading!
あたたか - warm, mild, genial. yes as in あたたかい
厚底 - thick-soled (of shoes)
くちい - no jisho entry but daijirin gave a definition of 腹がいっぱいである。
yikes hopefully you can get that dealt with soon and safely
餓える = to starve. Written language form of 飢える with also confusing Kanji forms. Both Kana forms have both Kanji forms in the IME. Spoken 飢え餓える in context (but IME doesn’t let me type). Both Kanji together is 飢餓.
