Today I read 老女的少女ひなたちゃん volume 10 from start to finish. I think my enjoyment of this series has been a bit of a U shape. It’s never been bad, don’t get me wrong, but volumes 5-8 were a lot weaker than volumes 1-4, or now 9-10 are up there with 1-4, I think. Maybe it’s just my tendency to favour what looks to be an overarching plot over the more slice of life sections.
Anyone, one volume left, so I’ll probably finish it tomorrow!
Saturday I bought about 30 books and I didn’t realize when I bought this one, but I’ve read it in English before! I got it because it looks spicy lol. It is. Delightfully so. It’s fun to read it in Japanese because I’ve forgotten most of the plot, so it’s kinda like reading it for the first time except there are hints for the difficult Japanese bits hidden in my mind. I wanted to read it all in one sitting, but I got in bed for warmth and then feel asleep lol.
Spent the entire morning rereading my favorite parts of 薬師と魔王 上 永遠の眷恋に咲く | L33 Got them all bookmarked This is a series I finished last October/November.
I reallyyyyy wanted to start reading the next book as well (spoiler: when things get spicy ), but I have a report with a deadline breathing down my neck and would probably end up reading for the entire day if I did that. So, I’m posting this early to stop myself, haha. With this, I’m not allowed to read more today.
Yesterday and today I’ve done very little, but I’ve actually read every day this week. I finished the first volume of Girls’ Last Tour and started the second. I’ve also read some sentences from the Kanji Learner’s Course in the Kanji Study app of Chase Colburn.
It’s really an amazing app, especially with the outlier dictionary (not free unfortunately) that explains the origins of kanji and their components.
I’ve also read (again) a few poems that I wanted to translate.
On workdays I chipped a bit at 月刊少女野崎くん (9) :
01.04 finished ch. 86
02.04 9 more pages
03.04 14 pages
04.04 5 pages
05.04 15 pages
On Saturday I finally caught up with all my book clubs atm:
月刊少女野崎くん 9 - finished
老女的少女ひなたちゃん - read last 3 weeks
気になってる人が男じゃなかった 1 - read last 3 weeks, finished
So on Sunday I leisurely read 黄泉のツガイ (4). I’m not sure if I want to stretch the fun, or just read it all at once, so for now I’m trying to enjoy the graphics and plot to the max, rereading some scenes and mining a bit.
Today I the final chapter of Shadows House Volume 16, and also finished Volume 1 of 気になってる人が男じゃなかった with the BBC.
Finishing multiple volumes at the same time is rare for me, but it always feels good!
And today I finished up the final volume of 老女的少女ひなたちゃん11。The ending was very bittersweet.
Thoughts on the ending as a story
I kind of… don’t like the ending. Not in the sense that it’s bad, but in the sense that it’s much more of a downer ending to me than I think was probably intended. It feels like the intention of the ending was like "Look, Toyo’s lingering issues are resolved, Sadao’s life is on track, Yamanashi has some friends, and Hinata now gets to live the normal childhood that Toyo’s memories sort of denied her.
But in a real sense, the Hinata minus Toyo thats left at the end of the story is not the same Hinata as people have come to know, both the readers and the other characters. There’s Sadao’s and Yamanashi’s closing scene which touches on this, but honestly, even aside from new-Hinata being less interested in them, it’s like… what are Hinata’s school friends going to think? Her family are bewildered too. It kind of feels like rather than Toyo passing on and leaving Hinata free, that Hinata as we have known her died and some stranger appeared in her body.
Now apart from that, I really enjoyed the manga, even aside from the Japanese practice. Like I started it when I was much less confident reading manga as a “Hah, funny kid acting like a grandma with easy language”, and for people reading in the book club, it’s still at that stage, but it’s definitely been a lot more than that as I got quite invested in the overall reincarnation story. Like as it goes on, it’s clear the core of the story is the sort of a resolution arc, for Sakuya, Yamanashi and Sadao. Hinata too, though hers is primarily expressed through Sadao. And while I’ve enjoyed the comic antics of “Look how weird Hinata is”, those resolution/redemption plotlines are the parts that were the highs of the series for me in the end.
Wow some big reveals in those chapters. Have time to read more but I think I will enjoy it better if I pause here for today and take time to absorb the new information!
Also not sure what was more shocking, the reveal or seeing the title of the chapter not spelt with kanji
第46話・生き人形
Home Post - my first post in the forums since joining in March. Glad for this challenge/opportunity and the supportive learning community. Little bit late start and hoping to keep progressing. Thanks!
whole bunch of pixiv, both days. vol one of wind breaker is temporarily free to read on bookwalker so i’ve had that open ready to go but it just, didn’t happen. oops. there’s always tomorrow.
So what is going on is just incredible I’m flying through ホリミヤ when 2 months ago I was reluctant to read it because I found it really difficult. It’s awesome to be able to measure how much I’ve improved !!!
By the way, I find this story as sweet and funny as when I first watched the anime. Miyamura best boy ever^^
