  • Today’s reader was a cumulative word game much like the Court of King Caractacus song: “Now the fascinating witches who put the scintillating stitches in the britches of the boys who put the powder on the noses on the faces of the ladies of the harem of the court of King Catactacus, were just passing by”

Two new exciting starts today.

  • 元カレの猫, a novel I was curious about that at first glance doesn’t seem to be a kid’s novel nor a light novel/anime related but does seem relatively easy. With a text hooker at least it’s quite brisk, an awful lot of business terminology in the first bit but once I got to the more conversational bit there were a lot less words I needed to look up. Will keep at it.
  • マジルミエ1 is a bit harder because no text lookup tool but at least it has full furigana which is making things quite a bit easier. Hoping it’s another case of terminology overload near the start when they’re setting up the world etc and it will get easier over time as well. Though I think with the action sequences it should go okay.

Just did a bit of bare minimum reading because I’m tired :sleepy: and I got distracted rereading an English children’s novel today.

Same as in my listening challenge post, my cousin visited over the long weekend so I really didn’t do any studying except keeping up with reviews and lessons. But I managed to finish off this week’s section of カードキャプターさくら today!

October 16th - Home post

Lots of reading today! First I finished the second episode of Kirakira Monstars - it’s so much fun! A reality show featuring a demon and a werewolf and a vampire, plus great music and great graphics - what more could I wish for?!

And then I stared reading Island, hoping to reach the end, reading and reading and reading, unable to put it down, 20.000 characters in all. And no ending in sight yet. I know I’m going to miss it when I finish it, but right now I just want to get to the end and get to the bottom of all the mysteries!

  • Surprised to be reading a fictionalsed backstory to the creation of Satori Reader! When Akiko first says she’s writing a story called 「コナの大冒険, I thought it was just a bit of cute self-referencing within Satori Reader, but when she meets a character called Brian who speaks fluent Japanese and is creating a Reading App for Japanese learners called Satori Reader, I thought this is getting a little too cute, but sure enough checked the comment section and Brian is there confirming that this is in part a backstory for the Satori Reader Project!

Day 16: I’ve read almost 30 synopses on bookwalker today trying to find a new book to read that would motivate me . Learnt a lot of new words and got a headache after a while. I guess that counts as reading because I don’t want to see any more Japanese today.

  • Progress on 元彼の猫。Lots and lots of business talk…
  • …which dovetails quite nicely with マジルミエ, funnily enough. The furigana is actually making this a lot easier to read despite the plethora of jargon, and it’s less ambiguous than even フリーレン, which I wasn’t quite expecting. So while I know less vocabulary, it might actually be a bit easier to follow than comparable shonen/seinen like 鋼 or 飯 (or 僕のヒーロー, though I haven’t tried to read that yet)
  • So far noticed some trends: conversations are easier, conversations about romance are noticably easier (probably a reflection that I’ve mostly been reading romcoms), and any time it gets into either business or technical talk i start to sink like a stone.
