You didn’t. I was worried even though I bought it. But I thought I should share that my feeling wasn’t true with you since you had expressed an interest in reading Basara. The bunko does look super crisp and while smaller than tanko, flipping through it I didn’t find the slightly smaller version hard to read, and since the bunko book format’s binding is whatever it is, it is super easy to open up fully to read.

in what was probably a bad decision i read all of the bonus content for ouran at once, but hey, vol 9 finished! i’m officially at the series halfway mark!! the love egoist chapter moved on from the teacher/student relationship and focused on the side character i liked too, so win-win there. no 着たい服がある cos wasn’t really feeling anymore manga, so i made it up to chapter two in the bakumatsu book and called it a day.
today’s nhk article was this one another granblue chapter, and the entries on のは~のことだ and ~ぬ in aDoIJG
words that stood out (house/building materials edition)
桜蘭:
鳥の子 - eggshell-colored traditional Japanese paper
花梨 - burmese rosewood
備後表 - high quality tatami covering made with soft rush from hiroshima prefecture
all these were on the same two/three pages

Today didn’t happen too much, I just translated two more chapters form Aryn’s rescue.
I have to take the time at some point to make such beautiful tables that you all have I have now finished 10 out of 24 chapters, which means I’m almost halfway through the story. So far, I’ve been really enjoying it!

Finished up on volume 3 of 放浪息子 today. Luckily things returned to a better state for the characters than were it was mid-volume. Coincidentally, it seems to have come in at the exact some 1h50m of the last two volumes. At least I’m consistent?

Figured I’d start on Dialogs: Train Station on Satori, might be some useful vocab that I will see in 阪急電車! I was expecting something very boring but it’s nicely written.
Also I use this reference quite a lot to check where prefectures are and stuff like that: DazaiNLH Japan Guide - Google Docs (link found in @javerend’s study log)
阪急電車
Funny sentence:
彼女いない歴イコール年齢だ
Which translates to
I have a history of not having a girlfriend, equal to my age = I’ve never had a girlfriend in my life

Today I learned it’s possible to make your own custom section in the hamburger menu. Very convenient for the threads and specific posts you use a ton. Instead of browsing through bookmarks (even if they’re pinned to the top), this view is much more satisfying and the ease of access is handy imo. In my screenshot below I have my home posts (listening and reading challenge) and my 2024 goal post.

- Another lookup chapter of Dungeon Meshi 2. I think this rate (keeping pace with the anime while maintaining my two book club reads) is achievable, and once i finish scanning the later volumes I should be able to sneak in the occasional lower-level manga as well, which is good.
The only question is if the anime will do 2 chapters an ep or 3. I could see either…
The best part of the tables is you can just copy paste your last one into the new one and it just works. Discourse is a pretty good platform, I have to say. (Does anyone remember phpBB?)

The rest of the とらドラ lns were on sale so I picked up the rest of those, but I’m trying out a different system than reading on bookwalker in order to make my reading just a little bit easier. Not for any time soon, probably, but I think I mentioned before that I could see how LNs become easy to read eventually, and will be returning to these at some point as that becomes more of a reality. The format was super wonky, but nothing calibre and a lil regex couldn’t fix!
Tomorrow is the start of my listening challenge, so my reading will probably dip off significantly, except for the stuff I’ll be counting for both reading+listening (vns and games, mostly). I’ll do at least a bit every day but maybe not be posting, though, and be back in full force in march for my 3月のライオン challenge!
Here’s the monthly stats! technically a record page month by a single page (prev 120), and a pretty solid showing in listening too. Only completed my 2 manga volumes + とらドラ!, but completing a lot of stuff hasn’t been my goal for a while.
Read:
- コンビニ人間 31 → 42 - read juuuuuust enough to push me over the top
omg that’s so handy, never would’ve found this if you hadn’t shared it
is toradora on sale on something that is… more… open to being crowbarred open than bookwalker/amazon?
Following @fallynleaf’s advice, generally anything that’s on sale on bookwalker is also on sale on rakuten kobo + using https://reader.ttsu.app for being able to directly use yomichan/tan with ebooks (and calibre for conversion, formatting, all that stuff). At least, that’s as much as I’ve played with so far

ホリミヤ vol. 1, 5 pages, quietly catching up with the ABBC.
I did quite a misinterpretation at a moment, but I consider it to be Miyamura’s fault. Indeed, I was not expecting for him to do such a sexist remark to a little girl Even Hori was speechless…
I feel like this happens a lot with shoujo, or at least i expect it less. It’s partially why I like yuri/lgbt stuff, you encounter less gender essentialism
Yes, unfortunately. Knowing the story, I know Miyamura isn’t sexist, but it makes me grind my teeth nonetheless
I might try to read more yuri/lgbt stories too, but I don’t know where to begin, to be honest. Maybe I’ll try to ask you some leads on your study log one of these days ?
January 30th!
Chapter 156 of Shadows House today. As always, it was very hard to convince myself to not keep reading past the bookclub assignment.
January 31st!
4 pages of the Orange Light Novel today.
I read 12 level N5 articles and 5 level one stories.

Read in Japanese and Spanish.
In Japanese, I read Sakura and Suzuki episodes 10 - 11. An interesting phrase encountered which seems very familiar to me maybe from all the anime I’ve watched: バカにしてるわけじゃない . I again played どうぶつの森 for 20 minutes again before sleeping. And funnily enough, the word I looked up yesterday (ゴキブリ) came up after I extinguished all the cockroaches in my house.
In Spanish, during my italki lesson, my teacher made me read an interesting article on National Geographic en Español titled “Primavera anticipada: Por qué las jacarandas de la Ciudad de México están floreciendo en invierno”. Really enjoying my teacher since he caters to my interests. This one was about how climate change has brought about an early spring making the jacaranda bloom two months earlier than usual. A trivia I learned from the article was that the jacaranda trees aren’t endemic to Mexico and were actually brought there by a Japanese guy.
