I made my first purchase on Bookwalker! (Though I’ve snagged some freebies before). I read through the first chapter of チョコっとちょこちゃん because it was on sale and @mitrac recommended it as an easy read for beginners. It’s really cute! I read it twice, once to just get the gist, and once with lookups. I think I mostly understood it without, though looking up things I wasn’t sure of definitely deepened my understanding.

I might still play some Pokemon today too, but we’ll see.

I think Seasons :snowman_with_snow: said it’s a new season today.

Smoking :smoking: was a lot of fun. I wanted to read more, but I had a bit of a cold and a bunch of chores. I made half decent progress on chores, but reading (and sleep lol) fell by the wayside.

I’m doing a lot better today but I have a bunch of outside the house chores, so I probably won’t get a lot of reading done today.

  • Read the rest of ルックバック. I didn’t expect to be so emotionally affected! One thing I appreciated in this manga is how drawing is depicted as actually really labour- and time-intensive.
  • Also read this week’s chapter of 舞妓さんち

I really loved Look Back in eng, so I’ll have to see how I manage in JPN. Would love to be able to read Fujimoto in JPN. Still haven’t read his other one-shot that got big… Goodbye Eri, I think?

This morning I had a nice cozy read with Reading Road (non-fiction articles about Japan) in bed and ふしぎ駄菓子屋.

It’s so fun being in this thread and seeing everyone’s journeys! :star_struck:

Maybe you need a bingo square for an “epic patience required” category

So glad that was helpful!!

Everything went great today! As I had planned, I translated two more chapters from Aryn’s rescue, and on top of that, I even read one more chapter (without translating it though) because it was really fun and interesting!

might as well lump the weekend posts together totally didn’t forget yesterday, no. did a granblue chapter on 27th and not much else tbh, then a few pages of the bakumatsu book today. slowly realising just how badly watching gintama has skewed my perception of who these people were and how they related to each other. guess i should be glad i’ve not played rgg ishin yet, that would have really messed me up here i think

01月28日 Read: Progress:
:soccer: ブルーロック Episode 凪1 15 pages 069/199

Finally finished chapter one of ブルーロック Episode 凪 :smiling_face_with_tear: :tada: By far the hardest thing I’m reading but it’s a nice challenge for sure.

Today overall though was a very good day for reading! Tracked a total of 2 hours 40 mins.

  • 35 mins of intensive reading of Bluelock Episode Nagi
  • 71 mins of casual re-reading of Bungo (enjoyed this, at points really got into the flow and forgot it was “study”)
  • 53 mins of free reading new content and minimal look ups (opened og Bluelock vol 1 for this, happy with how much I could follow, though probably the last month of pain with the spin off series prepared me a little :joy:)

I hadn’t read anything else by Fujimoto before, so I didn’t know what to expect going in, but I enjoyed it a lot too! I think you would manage Look Back fine, based on what you’ve been reading.

And I want to read Goodbye Eri too! I’ve been voting for it in the BBC but it never seems to do very well, so I’ll probably read it myself sometime.

Reading the next few pages (I don’t know how many, I’m not tracking) restored my faith in being able to read Japanese, basically the text wasn’t incomprehensible to me today.

As I mentioned in an additional post, I did end up checking the English translation of the pages that I had such trouble with, and comparing them to the JP version until I kinda understood how it all worked. Today I also chose to reread those pages to see if I could still understand what they actually meant, and see if I could better block out the sentences so I can maybe understand these kinds of things better in the future.

I also learnt that a verb had an additional meaning that I didn’t know about that was used. That sentence worked a lot better once I knew of that other meaning. 仕方がない。。。

:frog: かえるくん、東京を救う short story, Super Frog saves Tokyo by Murakami Haruki

2 more pages of this short story, which is so pleasant to read, with enjoyable characters and funny situations.
I sometimes get a little lost, but I manage.

EDIT :
:sunglasses: 可愛いだけじゃない式守さん, 6 pages along with the ABBC.

Read:

  • また、同じ夢を見ていた pg 5 → 17 missed that the natively beginner light novel club was reading this, but figured I’d hop in. It’s been on my TBR for a long time, even if it doesn’t count for bingo i’d be nice to knock it off. Probably not one I’ll read ahead of the club on, but a nice break

 Title Read today Currently at Notes
:exclamation: あなたも殺人犯になれる! Chapter 27 & 28 40 new words
:orange_book: 奥日光 2 episodes 59/62
:railway_car: 阪急電車 6.4% 40.0% 123 new words

Found a new trick to make myself focus on my novel reading:

  • decide how much I want to read beforehand (today I decided to reach 40%), and start by putting the bookmark to where that will be
  • only open two tabs: the book and DeepL
  • put on a music that I only hear when reading this book
  • read until I reach the bookmark!
阪急電車

There’s a whole discussion where a high school girl makes fun of her boyfriend, a working man 5 years older, because he doesn’t know how to read the kanji 絹 and probably doesn’t know 綿 either. She tells him to practice his kanji and he agrees. 『分かった、今度漢字ドリル買うてくる』 Come on man, just use Wanikani  (they are taught at level 46 & 58)
Made me a little proud too, imagine being better at kanji than a native! (okay it’s a fictional native but that must count for something anyways)

So you did end up finishing it before me hehe

Title Progress
また、同じ夢を見ていた 1.85% → 4%
  • Finished this week’s reading for また、同じ夢を見ていた with the natively CBC… though I need to go over it again to properly understand it.
  • Scanned another volume, Dungeon Meshi v10,… holy shit, some of the funniest and most horrific stuff I’ve seen at the same time. I think I’m getting better at reading stuff during the scanning process, especially when it’s less expository, but it’s still pretty tough going in terms of understanding everything. But allied with the visuals, I’m basically understanding the gist of the story, which is super fun.

Just barely though, and only because I stopped adding new review cards. You’re on the epilogue now right? What did you think of the story?

Yep, that absolutely counts

  • 作家になりたい! (1) (64.94% → 68.77%)

Since my grammar knowledge is a little shaky, I was inspired by @MissDagger and the A Dictionary of Japanese Grammar :white_flower: Reading Club to start reading the Basic dictionary cover to cover. Because I wanted to at least get to the main entries, I read pp. 1-96. As a result, I didn’t make much progress in 作家になりたい!, but I’m aiming to finish it next week.

・サイレント・ウイッチ VI (3% → 5%)

Short read. Other than that it was a rather good day.

Edit: So calendar can be used like this to mark when I finished books, huh… Nice.
