Just a little bit more Kindaichi Shounen vol.3. Kindaichi starts to tell us the solution and the arrogant police officer is completely speechless. Lol.

Still on the 火鍋 battle, but according to Audible, I have roughly 15 or 20 minutes left in the chapter depending on my reading speed. I have been listening on and off to get pronunciations of words I didn’t know, but word look up has been about 5-8 per session the last couple days. So a total of 15-18 new words day.

I’ll definitely get to chapter 3, which I am guessing if I keep the same pace will be done by thursday, and then I should finish the book by Saturday, but maybe I’ll finish sooner. I am having a lot of fun despite how hard the vocab is sometimes.

Today I read chapter 9 of God Bless the Mistaken. I found this chapter really interesting, I’m really looking forward to reading the next chapter now, so I’m a little sad that next week’s chapter will be the last chapter until Volume 3 gets published!

Shaking things up a bit today. I may have mentioned this at some point in passing, but one of my long-term goals with learning japanese is to eventually read all of 銀河英雄伝説. Not the only hard books on my long-term list, but they are high priority for me, and potentially slightly more approachable than stuff written in more classical or flowery styles. It may have a lot of technical and political terminology, but it is at least written in the style of modern japanese

Read:

• 銀河英雄伝説１ 序章 half of section 1 - Test section was, as expected, extremely hard. But! the difficulty was mostly vocabulary! With (more than) a few word look-ups, I was actually able to follow what was happening decently well. If I start reading some easier sci-fi and history stuff for the vocabulary base, I don’t think this as completely impenetrable as I was fearing it would be. Give it another year or two, perhaps.

Just completely mismanaged my time last night other than that spent cooking. I read more than I thought I had though. Also pleasantly surprised that there’s acknowledgement that the nazis were shitty. They’re usually not called Germans in the manga, but instead nazis/nazi germans. It’s not a lot of acknowledge, but definitely better than nothing. I’m curious to revisit the anime and hear if they kept all that in or not.

Got to Chapter 3 on my lunch break. This part of the story was winding down anyways, so I wasn’t super “focused” outside of 先輩 getting ラ・タ・タ・タム to 乙女. I think I will listen to the rest of Ch 2 on the way home, so I can hear what I just read, and maybe paint a better picture.

I am gonna say that I am done for the day. I may start Chapter 3 before I go to bed, but I won’t read on the way home or after I get home.

Played several hours of ポルティア. Turns out that that quest I needed the large planter boxes from the Church for was indeed a story quest, as a few in-game days after I finally traded for them (telling myself that Petra and I already knew there was nothing of use on those data disks) and completed that quest, I started getting a bunch of commissions related to the construction of South Block, where the big planters were placed. I don’t know if there’s anything following the drill machine Mint had me make; right now it’s all South Block stuff plus Gale’s pet project of having a hot air balloon park by the duck pond.

It’s funny how I misinterpreted 明日 as being “yesterday” because I’m so used to losing track of time collecting materials and stuff that I automatically assumed the letter was about a ceremony I’d missed and not one that hadn’t happened yet. That’s one of the first words I learned lmao

Today I’m trying to catch up on 半落ち. I’m skipping my usual note taking and dissection and aiming to just read. I started with 60ish pages to catch up on, not sure how far I’ve gotten but it won’t be all of them tonight as I wasn’t able to start until so late. Why must life have so many errands and chores and responsibilities?

I forgot to even check natively for reviews/ratings! The version of the book i got is actually just a raw txt file, so I don’t think it would be too hard to calculate the word frequency and make a deck myself, but a general sci-fi one might be more useful to me at my current level. I’ll look around for one of those, that’s an excellent idea

Actually… jpdb might have one made already.
Running it through jpdb gives me some fun statistics, like 帝国 being the 16th most common word in the entire book, even showing up more than some common particles

seem to be mostly through to the other side of covid (thank god) which means my brain must be working better than it was cos i absolutely flew through today’s chapter. might be partially cos of large amount of narration in this one, which i always find easier to read, but it’s reassuring! was a good chapter too, featured some cute humour at the start and then an interesting story in the middle followed by one of the most nope nope nope panels i’ve seen in a while, good time all round

Words of the day

• さする = to rub; to pat (e.g. at the back). A Kanji form is 摩(さす)る.
• いじける(.) = to grow timid; to cower / to become warped
• ふしだら(.) = loose; dissipated; licentious / sloppy = だらしない
• ほうぼう = everywhere; all directions = 方々(ほうぼう)
• あけすけ = frank; straightforward = 明(あ)け透(す)け
• つれない = cold; unfriendly; indifferent. Sounds like, won’t take along (連(つ)れる), or couldn’t catch a fish (釣(つ)る), to me.
• しくじる(.) = to fail
• 諫(いさ)める = to warn; to advise against. Also, 諌(いさ)める, just different Kanji form. Has Furigana.

• 療養(りょうよう) = medical treatment / recuperation
• 主治医(しゅじい) = attending physician
• 終日(しゅうじつ) = a whole day
• 運休(うんきゅう) = stoppage (of a transportation service). In context as 終日運休(しゅうじつうんきゅう).
• 保管(ほかん) = safekeeping (of money, goods)
• 人(ひと)さま = other people
• 裏木戸(うらきど) = backdoor
• 晩酌(ばんしゃく) = evening (alcohol) drinking (at home with meal)
• 明朝(みょうちょう) = tomorrow morning. No Furigana. The reading comparable to 明日(みょうにち), which is a formal reading of 明日(あした) or 明日(あす).
  • Another reading, 明朝(みんちょう) refers to Ming dynasty of China; as well as Mincho font style.
• 納骨(のうこつ) = placing a person’s ashes inside a funerary urn
• 勿体(もったい) = airs of importance. That puts 勿体無(もったいな)し under a different meaning in context.
• 二(に)の句(く) = next spoken word
• 後学(こうがく) = future reference
• 賭場(とば) = gambling den
• 一期一会(いちごいちえ) = once in a life time encounter
  • The reading of 期 looks like in 最期(さいご) (last moment before death).
  • The reading of 会 looks like in 会者定離(えしゃじょうり) (those who meet must part / every encounter must involve parting).
• 無我夢中(むがむちゅう) = losing control of oneself; being absorbed in
• 路頭(ろとう)に迷(まよ)う = to be set adrift in streets; to be left without means of survival

I am almost finished with my first read-through of Cherry Magic after reading for about 50 minutes yesterday. I love this book and am excited to go through it intensively. I may start Super Lovers book 1 as well.
