I ended up spending time on other things and so time for reading was compromised.

I tried drawing a greenhouse

Hereโ€™s the reference I used. If only I had colored pencils Iโ€™d love to try drawing the lighting too

Day 50
Just a little bit more Kindaichi Shounen vol.3. Kindaichi starts to tell us the solution and the arrogant police officer is completely speechless. Lol.

Still on the ็ซ้‹ battle, but according to Audible, I have roughly 15 or 20 minutes left in the chapter depending on my reading speed. I have been listening on and off to get pronunciations of words I didnโ€™t know, but word look up has been about 5-8 per session the last couple days. So a total of 15-18 new words day.

Iโ€™ll definitely get to chapter 3, which I am guessing if I keep the same pace will be done by thursday, and then I should finish the book by Saturday, but maybe Iโ€™ll finish sooner. I am having a lot of fun despite how hard the vocab is sometimes.

February 20th!

Today I read chapter 9 of God Bless the Mistaken. I found this chapter really interesting, Iโ€™m really looking forward to reading the next chapter now, so Iโ€™m a little sad that next weekโ€™s chapter will be the last chapter until Volume 3 gets published!

It turns out this story actually has another new cat! Her name is Nadia! But she isnโ€™t a witchโ€™s cat, so she canโ€™t talk to humans.

Shaking things up a bit today. I may have mentioned this at some point in passing, but one of my long-term goals with learning japanese is to eventually read all of ้Š€ๆฒณ่‹ฑ้›„ไผ่ชฌ. Not the only hard books on my long-term list, but they are high priority for me, and potentially slightly more approachable than stuff written in more classical or flowery styles. It may have a lot of technical and political terminology, but it is at least written in the style of modern japanese

Read:

  • ้Š€ๆฒณ่‹ฑ้›„ไผ่ชฌ๏ผ‘ ๅบ็ซ  half of section 1 - Test section was, as expected, extremely hard. But! the difficulty was mostly vocabulary! With (more than) a few word look-ups, I was actually able to follow what was happening decently well. If I start reading some easier sci-fi and history stuff for the vocabulary base, I donโ€™t think this as completely impenetrable as I was fearing it would be. Give it another year or two, perhaps.

Just completely mismanaged my time last night other than that spent cooking. I read more than I thought I had though. Also pleasantly surprised that thereโ€™s acknowledgement that the nazis were shitty. Theyโ€™re usually not called Germans in the manga, but instead nazis/nazi germans. Itโ€™s not a lot of acknowledge, but definitely better than nothing. Iโ€™m curious to revisit the anime and hear if they kept all that in or not.

Got to Chapter 3 on my lunch break. This part of the story was winding down anyways, so I wasnโ€™t super โ€œfocusedโ€ outside of ๅ…ˆ่ผฉ getting ใƒฉใƒปใ‚ฟใƒปใ‚ฟใƒปใ‚ฟใƒ  to ไน™ๅฅณ. I think I will listen to the rest of Ch 2 on the way home, so I can hear what I just read, and maybe paint a better picture.

I am gonna say that I am done for the day. I may start Chapter 3 before I go to bed, but I wonโ€™t read on the way home or after I get home.

Played several hours of ใƒใƒซใƒ†ใ‚ฃใ‚ข. Turns out that that quest I needed the large planter boxes from the Church for was indeed a story quest, as a few in-game days after I finally traded for them (telling myself that Petra and I already knew there was nothing of use on those data disks) and completed that quest, I started getting a bunch of commissions related to the construction of South Block, where the big planters were placed. I donโ€™t know if thereโ€™s anything following the drill machine Mint had me make; right now itโ€™s all South Block stuff plus Galeโ€™s pet project of having a hot air balloon park by the duck pond.

Itโ€™s funny how I misinterpreted ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅ as being โ€œyesterdayโ€ because Iโ€™m so used to losing track of time collecting materials and stuff that I automatically assumed the letter was about a ceremony Iโ€™d missed and not one that hadnโ€™t happened yet. Thatโ€™s one of the first words I learned lmao

Today Iโ€™m trying to catch up on ๅŠ่ฝใก. Iโ€™m skipping my usual note taking and dissection and aiming to just read. I started with 60ish pages to catch up on, not sure how far Iโ€™ve gotten but it wonโ€™t be all of them tonight as I wasnโ€™t able to start until so late. Why must life have so many errands and chores and responsibilities? :weary:

That mirrors the sole review of the book on Natively fwiw. TBH with all the specialized decks out there, Iโ€™m sure you could find one geared towards sci-fi, or possibly even one aimed at this book series itself.

I forgot to even check natively for reviews/ratings! The version of the book i got is actually just a raw txt file, so I donโ€™t think it would be too hard to calculate the word frequency and make a deck myself, but a general sci-fi one might be more useful to me at my current level. Iโ€™ll look around for one of those, thatโ€™s an excellent idea

Actuallyโ€ฆ jpdb might have one made already.
Running it through jpdb gives me some fun statistics, like ๅธๅ›ฝ being the 16th most common word in the entire book, even showing up more than some common particles

seem to be mostly through to the other side of covid (thank god) which means my brain must be working better than it was cos i absolutely flew through todayโ€™s chapter. might be partially cos of large amount of narration in this one, which i always find easier to read, but itโ€™s reassuring! was a good chapter too, featured some cute humour at the start and then an interesting story in the middle followed by one of the most nope nope nope panels iโ€™ve seen in a while, good time all round :+1:

words that stuck out: ็ต็ถ (biwa, the instrument), ๆฉ™่‰ฒ (ใ ใ„ใ ใ„ใ‚, orange colour), ๆ‰‹ๆŽขใ‚Š (ใฆใ•ใใ‚Š, fumbling, groping around)

  • ใ‚ฌใƒฉใ‚นใฎใ†ใ•ใŽ Ch.8

I read at around 30-60 min per chapter, while the audio tracks are around 10-20 min.

  • ใตใ—ใŽใฎๅ›ฝใฎใƒใƒผใƒ‰ Vol.5 Ch.22-23

Reminiscence before a storm. Actually, memory is of a storm.

  • ใ†ใŸใ‚ใ‚Œใ‚‹ใ‚‚ใฎ
Words of the day
  • ใ•ใ™ใ‚‹ = to rub; to pat (e.g. at the back). A Kanji form is ๆ‘ฉ(ใ•ใ™)ใ‚‹.
  • ใ„ใ˜ใ‘ใ‚‹(.) = to grow timid; to cower / to become warped
Sounds like, wonโ€™t take along (้€ฃ(ใค)ใ‚Œใ‚‹), or couldnโ€™t catch a fish (้‡ฃ(ใค)ใ‚‹), to me.
  • ใ—ใใ˜ใ‚‹(.) = to fail
  • ่ซซ(ใ„ใ•)ใ‚ใ‚‹ = to warn; to advise against. Also, ่ซŒ(ใ„ใ•)ใ‚ใ‚‹, just different Kanji form. Has Furigana.
  • ๅ‚…(ใ‹ใ—ใš)ใ = to serve (a master). Has Furigana in context.
  • ้ (ใจใŠ)ใฎใ = to become distant = ้ ้€€(ใจใŠใฎ)ใ
  • ไบค(ใ‹)ใ‚ใ™ = to exchange words. Compare ่บฑ(ใ‹ใ‚)ใ™ = to dodge, which also be of words. Also, ไบค(ใพใ˜)ใ‚ใ‚‹ which has different meanings (to intersect / to associate with other people).
  • ๅทฎ(ใ•)ใ—ๅ‡บ(ใง)ใŒใพใ—ใ„ = being meddlesome. Verb form is ๅทฎ(ใ•)ใ—ๅ‡บ(ใง)ใ‚‹.
  • ใ‹ใๅ‡บ(ใ )ใ™ = to rake out (e.g. water) = ๆŽป(ใ‹)ใๅ‡บ(ใ )ใ™

  • ๆฐ—(ใ)ใŒๅ‘(ใ‚€)ใ = to feel like doing. Being filled with such feeling is ใ‚„ใ‚‹ๆฐ—(ใ)ๆบ€ใ€…(ใพใ‚“ใพใ‚“).
  • ่พ›ๆฐ—่‡ญ(ใ—ใ‚“ใใใ•)ใ„ = irritating; depressing; donโ€™t like thinking about
  • ไบœ็กซ้…ธ(ใ‚ใ‚Šใ‚…ใ†ใ•ใ‚“) = sulfurous acid. Sulfuric acid is just ็กซ้…ธ(ใ‚Šใ‚…ใ†ใ•ใ‚“).
  • ๅฑ‹ๅค–(ใŠใใŒใ„) = outdoors. ้‡Žๅค–(ใ‚„ใŒใ„) is also outdoors.

  • ๅฏ„ๆธฏ(ใใ“ใ†) = stopping at a harbor
  • ่ˆชๆตท(ใ“ใ†ใ‹ใ„) = sea voyage. Sounds like ๅพŒๆ‚”(ใ“ใ†ใ‹ใ„) = regret, but of course the context would be different.

  • ๆด—้ขๅ™จ(ใ›ใ‚“ใ‚ใ‚“ใ) = washbasin; wash bowl. Well, just a bowl, not a big electronic machine (ๆด—ๆฟฏๆฉŸ(ใ›ใ‚“ใŸใใ)). Also, smaller than ็›ฅ(ใŸใ‚‰ใ„).
  • ๆฐทๅšข(ใฒใ‚‡ใ†ใฎใ†) = icepack. I remembered the second Kanji, but not the reading. Has Furigana.

  • ๆ˜Žๆœ(ใฟใ‚‡ใ†ใกใ‚‡ใ†) = tomorrow morning. No Furigana. The reading comparable to ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅ(ใฟใ‚‡ใ†ใซใก), which is a formal reading of ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅ(ใ‚ใ—ใŸ) or ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅ(ใ‚ใ™).
  • ็ด้ชจ(ใฎใ†ใ“ใค) = placing a personโ€™s ashes inside a funerary urn
  • ๅ‹ฟไฝ“(ใ‚‚ใฃใŸใ„) = airs of importance. That puts ๅ‹ฟไฝ“็„ก(ใ‚‚ใฃใŸใ„ใช)ใ— under a different meaning in context.

I am almost finished with my first read-through of Cherry Magic after reading for about 50 minutes yesterday. I love this book and am excited to go through it intensively. I may start Super Lovers book 1 as well.
