📚📚 Read every day challenge - Winter 2023 ☃❄

Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Single Day” Challenge, Winter 2023 Edition! :snowman_with_snow::snowflake:

Ah, New Year’s - always a great opportunity to refresh and restart  New year, new thread, new challenge season! :sparkles: If your New Year’s resolution is to read more in Japanese or work through your backlog of manga/novels, this challenge might be just the thing to get you going. If you missed the previous Read Every Day challenges, feel free to jump in on this one! We would love to have more people join in on the fun and experience the magic of the challenge :sparkles:

A little history behind this challenge: in the summer of 2021, @Redglare had the awesome idea of doing a “Read Every Day” challenge, where we challenged ourselves to read something in Japanese every day for 2 whole months - we liked this challenge so much that we decided to make it a recurring thing! 1.5 years later, and the challenge is still going strong

Every challenge thread has its own special flavor, but the one thing they always have in common is being positive, encouraging, and fun! There are also usually some cute manga and cute kitties cough @MissDagger cough involved

Why is this challenge so special, or what makes it unique? Well, we think it’s a combination of the short/limited time frame, the habit-focused (versus output-focused) approach to the goal of “reading more,” and the general atmosphere of camaraderie and community spirit that’s been present in each challenge thread thus far ^^ I can say from personal experience that these challenges have helped me read way more than I would have otherwise, and many people (including myself) have noticed significant growth in reading speed and/or stamina while participating in the challenges.

Whether you are an expert reader already or a new reader just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate in this challenge! To quote @Redglare:

This is a thread for people who:

:bookmark: want to spend time reading a bunch this winter
:bookmark: want to improve their reading speed and comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge of reading every day for two or so months :books: :books:

Time frame: January 1 - February 28

This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! This thread will be up and running until the end of March, so you can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you.

Your reading materials can be whatever you want, be it manga, light novels, books, visual novels, magazines, graded readers, satori reader, Japanese webpages/blogs, or Japanese games - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: :durtle_the_explorer: “Reading” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated - for example, some people have counted reading Japanese subtitles as reading some days. In general, we are a pretty flexible and forgiving bunch

Threads worth checking out

I recommend checking out The News Reading Challenge thread if you’d like to read news articles every day, but you are of course welcome to post about it in this thread too if you’d like to.

If you don’t know where to find reading material I recommend checking out the Immersion/Reading section of the following thread:

There’s also quite a few book clubs here on the forum, some of them have vocab lists which can make for an easier reading experience. A list of book clubs can be found here:

Challenge Plan

The plan!

A new challenge and a new year!

It will start very busy for me, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are several read nothing days in the first half of January. Not much I can do about that, but outside that I don’t know of any big challenges to the challenge. There will probably be more.

This would also be a good place to note that while I aim to read every day. I don’t mind missing days. Consistency is about doing it often, not always. At least that works much better for me.

My line up for this challenge is very VN, visual novel, heavy this time around. With two VN clubs running at the same time, plus me wanting to finishing Loopers which I read 40% of last year.

I also have Orange which I’ve reading with the club I’m leading. And in February, I will hopefully join the BBC, beginners book club, again for the reading of Komi-san. Although I might be too busying to join while the club is active.

Lastly, I feel I hope I can really start hitting reading in English (and Swedish) again. I was a voracious reader as a teen, but ever since I hit my twenties, it has been very hit or miss. Sometimes I’ll read loads, and then I’ll read nothing for a long time.

I once did the read one novel every week challenge during my voracious days, and I finished it within six months (instead of a year). I want to get back to that, at least a little.

And if someone wanted to see my reading goals for all of 2023, they are right here on my log. (A very long post warning applies (as usual).)

I slouched a bit in reading in autumn, thus I’m here to keep myself a bit accountable. I’m hoping to read at least a little more in 2023 than I’m completing 2022 with, so the accountability will help keep me on track.

With 20 manga series on my list to continue or start reading in 2023, I certainly won’t be short on variety!

Yay, new challenge! I finished かがみの孤城(上)in December and have been slacking off since then, so for the new year I’ll start 世界から猫が消えたなら, and if I can finish that before the challenge ends I’ll read かがみの孤城(下).

My goal this challenge will simply be to read more than I did in the last one.

As has become tradition, I won’t be making a calendar on here, but I can share my phone’s habit tracker if needed.

I only have ~62 pages to finish out my reading ‘obligations’ for the year so I indulged myself in volume 4 of 少女革命ウテナ this afternoon/evening. Have I mentioned what a great series that is? Cause it’s great

This year I want to finish at least one (non-book-club) novel every challenge. Since I’m reading through the breaks, too, that’s one novel every three months, which should be more than doable. When I started out reading in Japanese, it took me two months to finish one, and while that was when I had less to read so it was easier to prioritize and not have a gajillion books started at once, that was also when I could comfortably manage at most like 8 pages a day, and recently I read 58 and could have kept going strong. So technically, I could probably read 3 novels per month, but I don’t necessarily want to punish myself for going where the motivation takes me, just guide myself toward finishing the 4 non-book-club novels I already have started.

For accountability’s sake, those are:
・2.43 清陰高校男子バレー部 代表決定戦編① by 壁井ユカコ
・空への助走 福蜂工業高校運動部 by 壁井ユカコ
・ステージ・オブ・ザ・グラウンド by 蒼山サぐ
・青春サプリ。自分がここにいる理由

2 and 4 are technically short story collections, but they still count in my book.

The other non-manga I have started:
・おばちゃんたちのいるところ by 松田青子 (book club)
・夜カフェ3 by 倉橋燿子 (book club)
・夜カフェ4 by 倉橋燿子 (book club)
・透き通った風が吹いて by あさのあつこ
・風が強く吹いている by 三浦しをん
・この本を盗む者は by 深緑野分

This is gonna be my first time taking this challenge! Let’s see how long I can actually stay commited lol

I’m currently participating in a discord server re-read of Ace of Diamond, so my goal is going to be to read 1-2 chapters of that manga in Japanese everyday. As an additional thing for when I have the time, I’m going to do my best to summarize what I’ve read in a notebook in Japanese (we’ll see how that goes lmao, probably gonna be lots of 降谷は投げたい。御幸先輩は受けたくない。沢村はまた泣いてる。)

I would read with a target of widening of what I could be able to read. Probably mainly collecting vocabularies, phrases, and meaningful Kanji’s. For the flow and minimal speed, I would leave it to Listening Challenge.

Hello everyone!
I’m new at WaniKani, so unfortunately I didn’t participate at the end of last year when reading was my main focus in learning Japanese. I don’t think I will be reading that much at the beginning of the year, but I would still like to read consistently so this will be a great way to keep me accountable :upside_down_face:

Count me in!
I’ll join for another two months again but this time I may spend less time on my reading sessions because I plan on focusing more on grammar.

I’ll pick up right where I left off in the Autumn/Fall Challenge: I’ll continue reading Aria: the masterpiece – a series I’m reading for the first time – and rereading Card Captor Sakura after many years; this time in Japanese.

Progress made during the previous challenge

I may add a NHK easy article here and there because I’m slowly approaching the point where, at least according to wkstats, I should be able to recognise around 80% of the Kanji featured in their articles. Though this will really be a rare occurrence since I dislike reading the news – I’m honestly only curious to see how far I’ve come when it comes to recognising (common) Kanji. :innocent:

Regarding goals, I don’t have many since I can’t estimate my progress reliably. My one goal is to read (almost) every single day in the span of the next two months.

Only thing left to do is to wish everyone who is continuing their challenge from the Autumn thread, and every other community member taking on this challenge this time or for the first time a good reading.

Love this idea! I’m trying to get back into it and this might just be what I need. I have absolutely no idea what I should read though, so we’ll see what happens
I don’t have a lot of free time so I might just have to set the bar really low

Hi! I’m new to posting on the forums, looking forward to taking part in this! I’ll be chaotically switching between a few manga (including 古見さんはコミュ症です、 やがて君になる、私を喰べたい人でなし), and some video games as well (Monster Hunter Stories 1 initially). I’m a pretty slow reader just now - hopefully I’ll speed up as this goes on and learn some more grammar too!

I missed this challenge. I could have tried to continue it during December, but it was way too stressful. Here’s to a more chill year.

Reading streak: 193 days

Hello hello again everyone! I see many familiar faces so far from the fall reading challenge but some new ones as well! I look forward to reading together with all of you!

Currently Reading:

  • Manga: 三ツ星カラーズ7 + abbc and bbc picks
  • Book: on break
  • Textbook: 新完全マスター読解N3
  • News: NHK News Web Easy/Wikipedia
  • Game: ポケモン サファイア and どうぶつの森e+
Goals:

Like with the last challenge my primary goal is just to miss no days of reading and keep that reading streak going! I’m still defining a successful reading day as one chapter of manga, since that has been doable for me even on busy/bad days.
I also have been thinking ahead a little bit about my long term goals for 2023, and what I will need to start doing now in order to achieve them. My main three goals for 2023 are:

  1. Finish every volume of manga I currently physically own (not nec. including any new stuff I buy this year, but just clear out stuff so it doesn’t get buried by the new) - This is going to work out to around 66冊 in 52 weeks, so a little bit more than 1 a week on average. Doable! For this challenge I’d like to knock out the rest of ホリミヤ for sure, and then probably either 三ツ星カラーズ or しろくまカフェ to fill out some time, and then start working on 3月のリオン in earnest during the titular month.
  2. I want to transition into reading more stuff which is pure text. Little less specific since I don’t have the experience here to know what I’m going to want to read or what I will like reading! But, I hope to have a better understanding of that by the end of this seasonal challenge. I want to read at least one volume of either a childrens book, light novel, or a full collection of short stories.
  3. Be prepared to take the JLPT N2 test by December 2023. Maybe this is a bit ambitious, but I think it’s probably doable. Whether I actually sit for the test or not, I’d like to be at a level where I would feel comfortable doing it. For this reading challenge, I’d like to finish working through the 新完全マスター読解N3 book that’s been sitting on my desk since last summer.

So there we go! With some measurable and potentially achievable, but still challenging goals set, let’s get reading! 皆さん、頑張ってください!(and thank you for hosting again @windupbird !!)

New year, new reading! Thanks again @windupbird for being the reading host!

Looking forward to reading along with everyone else, I still need to find something to read.

Finally decided on what to read, got pretty obsessed with ancient Chinese literature lately (currently reading Three Kingdoms again (in English)) so I have a craving for reading about samurai and bloody battles of ancient times so… what else to try and attempt to read but 新書太閤記 by 吉川 英治??
(In English I think it’s translated to “Taiko: An Epic Novel of War and Glory in Feudal Japan” by Eiji Yoshikawa, but it’s about the Sengoku period with the constant upheaval of power to unite Japan; Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, Ieyasu and all those guys)

Perhaps I will regret this later, this this is very long (900 pages or something, split into 11 books/volumes), but there is no going back now, I am committed.
