声優ラジオのウラオモテ #03 夕陽とやすみは突き抜けたい？ - 62.40% → 86.80%

This volume of 声優ラジオ has continued to be a rather unpleasant read with what kind of feels like suffering porn as 由美子(ゆみこ) has finally grasped a significant voice role, but during the recording session for the episode where her character’s story reaches denouement (and then dies), she repeatedly fails her lines. There is no depth to why she fails exactly, so the only thing we end up seeing is her continuing to flub her part while the other 声優(せいゆう) leave and the recording session ultimately concludes fruitlessly, so the last 30 pages have basically just been an exercise in misery for really no reason…

Monkeys!¡ has been a bit better; I’m fairly deep into 霧灯(むとう)'s route now and while kind of aimless and not that interesting, at the very least it’s been fairly light so far. Something amusing to note is that I was unofficially using the game’s CG collection %'s to determine my progress and I thought I was reading insanely slowly but it just turns out it just includes every single variation of the game’s more… licentious scenes. (After just one of them, it went up from 14% to 21%)

Along that note however, it almost feels like reading visual novels have somehow made me… worse at reading Japanese? I know it’s irrational but I feel like it’s enabling me to be lazy when I completely misread a word and the voice line that follows lets me cruise by without thinking too much of it… it’s probably just my imagination though.

Word of the Day: 倶楽部(くらぶ) - club. Today’s the day I learn that クラブ has an ateji reading (and that it sees a shockingly significant amount of usage)

Must be the luck of a new thread because I also completed the artwork that I’ve been collecting these colours to make a palette for, though, I only ended up using about five or so of them. The colours I needed were never the colours that I had read about, or I’d read about the shade I was looking for way after I needed it
Oh well, started a new one, and now I have more colours to start off with I should make use of them… or so I thought, all the blacks/greys/whites are at the back of the book, so it figures that this one will require a lot of neutral shades.

Read 44 pages of あの空はキミの中, reading ch 2-3 and leaving off on pg 76. This is actually a pretty comfortable read. There are definitely still words I gotta look up, but I don’t think there have been any kanji whose reading I didn’t know. There are more words written in kana than the other partial-furi novels, but not as many as in 夜カフェ (pry because that was upper elementary/lower MS, while this is upper MS). I think the only time something being written in kana tripped me up was when も followed を. “‘もつかむ’? Is that a word? Oh! ワラ is ‘straw’! I know that one! ‘ワラをも掴む’!”

「陽向は、前の中学に、カレがいたりした？」 …Is that being “いたりした” instead of “いた” implying “(or a girlfriend?)” or… (Probably not, especially since later we get “体育館の裏で何の話があるんだろう。女子同士だから告白はないよね,” although directly after that first line Hinata did say she’d mistakenly been confessed to by a girl before. But why would they ask if she’d had a boyfriend like that? What else would be implied? It it simply to make it less direct?)

Some vocab of note:

長閑 (のどか) [な-adj.] tranquil; calm; quiet; peaceful
一目置く (いちもくおく) [expression, カ五] to take one’s hat off to a person; to acknowledge another’s superiority. It comes from when the weaker player in a game of go is allowed to place an extra stone (一目) as a handicap.

While I did read in the weekend (I cannot stay a single day away from Japanese ) it was barely anything at all, so I consider today my first actual day. I feel like I didn’t read thaaat much as I was catching up on WK reviews and some grammar reviews (Anki, Bunpro…) Anyway, I read today:

3 pages of あん (half of chapter 4)
5 pages of Ouran (Chapter 3, part 1)
aDoBJG: もう 1

I also have this book I bought a few years ago called １日１０分初級から始める読解１２０, which has 120 short-ish texts of increasing difficulty for you to read once a day and improve your reading comprehension. I never really got to the end, so it’s a shame. Today I read page 105, so I am hoping this time I get to 120!

Hoping to get a bit more reading done tomorrow, but for books like あん and コンビニ人間 I also have to spend a long time looking up words and adding to the vocab sheets, so I also have to take that into account with my planning.

Forgot to log my first 2 days, usually I just write page numbers in Todoist before ticking off my daily raiding. I want to make pretty stats down the lone, but I can’t quite retrieve that data without keyboard-magic so I’ll make estimates.

I do reading in LingQ which has stats for novels at least. It feels good looking at numbers going BRRR~

One weird phrase: 消化試合 - throwaway match
One funny phrase: 餅は餅屋 - (like let the “if you need mochi, go to the mochi shop”?) meaning one should go to specialists for the best results, (when a character talks about how military strategy should be entrusted to his generals as he stuggles to stay awake)*

Day 3! I ended up opting for Ghost Trick with the time I had last night, which is really fun and I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s fine because I wouldn’t have finished 999’s weekly section anyway. I must’ve spent about 3 more hours today. Lots to read! We’re in the home stretch, truly exciting stuff now. Reading wasn’t too hard but it was a bit of an endurance test. I like to include screenshots to make these posts a little more interesting where I can, but it’s hard with the stuff I read today to not spoil stuff so, uhh, have an environment.

Nice door, huh? Looking through new words I came across today, the best has to be 天誅 (てんちゅう), divine punishment.

Since I started the visual novel club I gotta plug it at least once in here, really glad I did and loving the groups I get to read along with. Come join us if you’re interested sometime, we’re starting a new VN fairly soon! You too could look at text over a picture of a nice door like this!

I thought I was getting new content already but turns out I still had a bit left that I didn’t account for, but that was quickly done and it’s all uncharted territory already. Did that plus a puzzle room that I can’t count most of because I can’t hook that, but pretty cool. This is quickly becoming my new favourite daily Japanese related activity, it’s like unlimited reading allowance . Couldn’t quite finish the week (on week 8 atm) but definitely tomorrow.

・薬屋のひとりごと 10 (17% → 45%)

Day went by in a blink. A good portion of it spent observing tiny birds after I refilled bird feeder with nuts and sunflower seeds. Birds went crazy.

As for reading, quite a few words I’ve “learned” on WK showed up today. You know that feeling when you haven’t really learned a word until you’ve seen it being used in a unique setting? One such word today was 網羅(もうら) (lvl 57).

地図を取り出して、今日向かった村々に丸をつける。これで周辺の農村部は網羅(もうら)した。

There’s now a neuron in my brain connecting 網羅 to all the farm villages on a map. They’re all covered

If you don’t already use https://learnnatively.com/ , that’s a really good resource for checking the (approximate) reading level of stuff. Things kinda bounce around as people read and review them, but horimiya has stayed at level 22/23 for a while. The current ABBC pick is level 14, and the last one before that was 20 (and had quite a few comments about being a challenge), so this would be on the harder end of ABBC level. Not to try to dissuade you from trying, though! Especially if it ends up being the book club pick you will have a ton of support for it!

ohhh ty did not know this before and looks very handy. I loved the English manga and I think I will eventually get to these after finishing my current book list. thanks for the rec!

4 day streak already! I have created a reminder on my phone and it really helps to keep going.
I am doing my reading and writing and WK all in the morning, it seems I am most productive during that time of the day.

Regarding the reading, I’ve been reading a cute little story on tadoku.org called 夜の空で and since it is relatively easy, I read 1-2 pages and am not discouraged.

Today I even read 2 sentence on an easy Japanese news website. Did not understand a single thing except 雨 but each sentence was split up into it’s smaller parts with explanations at the end of the news article and that helped.

All in all, still happy with joining the challenge
