かがみの孤城, 60-71%

True to my decision to start finishing books, I only focused on かがみの孤城 today. According to my calculations I read about 60 pages. Did I say there was some excitement yesterday? Well, it’s gone. Out of those 60 pages, there may have been about, I don’t know, 10 pages of actual interesting content? Don’t these characters have any sense of urgency? Is the writer being paid by the page? What’s going on?
I’m very thankful for the audiobook. Even though I can’t stand the narrator’s voice when she gets timid and whiny, it helps keep a good rhythm at least.

I realize I probably sound way too negative. I still hope for an amazing payoff, but however spectacular the ending, I’m starting to doubt it can make up for pages upon pages of almost nothing. (sorry, I tried to fix sounding negative and I made it worse )

Here is my report for last week:

Last week was very successful, first I finished 水たまりで息をする and then I decided to clean up my “reading” pile a bit and finished 穴 (finally, whew ). Then I was a bit undecided regarding what to read next, and so I went for another “reading” pile cleanup book: ifの悲劇 . When I tried it the last time, I just couldn’t manage the dialogues, but this time around I have almost no issues with it, which makes me very happy! I reread about half of what I had read before (from where the “if” part starts) because I figured it might be good to refresh my memory on that.
For those of you who haven’t heard about the book: It’s a kind of murder mystery where very early in the story a car accident happens, and from that point on the story is split into two branches: Either a certain person dies in that car accident, or not. From there we get 4 chapters each that tell the two stories in an interleaved fashion, which makes it a bit confusing (“which branch are we on again? where did we leave off previously?”) and also very interesting because for the later stages the reader has lots of background info from both stories at the same time, while the protag of course only knows one side of it.

Plans for this week:

• Finish ifの悲劇
• Dive back into some Flesh&Blood bonus stories as we are planning to pick up Vol. 12 soon, and I want to read one or two of these short stories first.

蛇 actually showed up today while reading and I got it without having to think about it, though I’m sure that’s just because it was still in my head from this morning lol. Well, here’s to hoping it continues~

• リンゴに蜂蜜 to end. Well, though we got furi for the one character’s name in ch 3, when the other’s showed up in dialogue in ch 4 (we had previously seen it in a yearbook), there was none. Because that makes sense. Anyway, I liked both stories! They were good.
• アタック!! vol 7. The other team has a player who’s 206 cm tall, and his 100%の高さ, his 最高到達点 is 246 cm. Ignoring net height since that could possibly have changed in the few years between when this and 2.43 were written (the height is 240 cm pre-Nationals; the ball is wider than that difference), though even if it did, it wouldn’t have been by much— The distance from the inside of my elbow to the tip of my middle finger (what sticks over my head if I stick my hand straight up) is about 39 cm, and I’m 170 cm. I may have a relatively wide wingspan, but his arms are absolutely longer than mine, so if my understanding is right and your 最高到達点 is the highest point the center of your palm reaches (the highest you can hit the ball), that’s definitely more than 40 cm. Plus it’s stated—and we actually see—that he doesn’t even have to jump, he can just reach his arms up and his wrists are higher than the top of the net. And yet when he is jumping, the highest point he reaches is only 246 cm…? Okay, then… Was it supposed to be 346 cm?
  I have enjoyed seeing their arrogant captain get knocked down a peg and his perfect plan get laid to waste though. Which should continue in the next vol, as this match isn’t even half over~

• the wikipedia page for the アイフィンガーガエル (also called ホネナガキガエル) after a blog I follow posted one this morning. They’re so cute! Since I clicked through to the relevant pages when a word I didn’t know had a link, rather than immediately looking it up in a dictionary, I ended up at least partially reading several other related pages too.

I tried to read as much JoJo as I could last night. I went to bed at a surprisingly decent time, but then had weirdly unpleasant dreams. I’m not sure if they’re related to JoJo or just my feelings about Part 2…

Debating about only reading the new JoJolands chapter today. Previously, Amazon Japan was delivering them release day as promised, but this time, they were late. They never delivered on time before JoJolands started though. While there is a sticker, this is making me consider buying from the local store. The only reason I’ve not been buying there is that they always receive it the day after release.

not quite a full section of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) today cos it was extremely long (i don’t think i’m even halfway through) but i finally met kay and shi-long so that made up for it! even if shi-long’s speech is the hardest for me to read so far; i’ll think i’ve got him figured out and then he’ll drop one of his little made up sayings, or a zen buddhist specific term, and i’m lost again ah well

words that stood out: 監禁(かんきん) (confinement), 裁(さば)きの庭(にわ) (court of law) cos it’s fun, and 不覚(ふかく) (failure, defeat, blunder; unconsciousness) as part of 不覚を取る (to suffer an embarrassing defeat) which i think was a pun cos edgeworth (who says this about himself) was actually unconscious during what he was referring to.

Monkeys!¡

Finally finished up 〆百合. The ending kind of jumped the shark a little bit but overall it was still very fun and I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys yuri SOL/romance to give it a try, the novels are neither long nor particularly difficult.

Also started going back to Monkeys!¡ again after an impromptu break and enjoyed myself a bit more than I used to, I was definitely getting fatigued from the nonstop barrage of jokes so maybe reading it slowly really is the way to go lmao…

Word of the Day: 出(で)る杭(くい)は打(う)たれる - the nail that sticks out gets hammered down; people that stick out too much get punished. Pretty easy to understand with an almost identical adage in English.

Words of the day

• ニマニマ(.) = (on-mim) grinning. Probably like ニヤニヤ.
• ギタギタ(.) = (on-mim) thoroughly beaten to pulp / oily; greasy
• カスタネット(.) = castanets, a percussion instrument
• スパッツ(.) = spats, leggings (leg attire)
• レギンス(.) = leggings (leg attire)
• コッペパン(.) = an oblong-shaped white bread similar to an American hot dog bun
• ビンタ(.) = slap on the cheek = ピンタ
• なんたる = what (e.g. “what rudeness”) = 何(なん)という / 何(なん)である

• 塵取(ちりと)り = a dustpan. 塵(ちり) is dust.
• おしどり夫婦(ふうふ) = a couple who are always together, like a pair of mandarin ducks = 鴛鴦夫婦(おしどりふうふ)
• 変(か)わり身(み) = change of attitude; feint and dodge
• 随分(ずいぶん)な = terrible
• 大仰(おおぎょう) = exaggerated
• 破天荒(はてんこう) = unheard-of = 前代未聞(ぜんだいみもん) = 未曾有(みぞう). On reading throws me off guard. The meaning comes from cutting through 天荒(てんこう), which is a wasteland, like 荒野(こうや).
  • 荒天(こうてん) is stormy weather. I don’t think it is related.
• 勲章(くんしょう) = a conferred medal
• 脇役(わきやく) = a supporting role
• 引(ひ)き立(た)て役(やく) = a role to make someone else standoff
• 双方(そうほう) = both parties
• 二重奏(にじゅうそう) = instrumental duet
• 協奏曲(きょうそうきょく) = concerto, a composition of orchestra and soloist
• 伴奏(ばんそう) = musical accompaniment
• 譜面(ふめん) = musical score
• 鍵盤(けんばん) = keyboard part. Well, it’s not 看板(かんばん).
• 献呈(けんてい) = a dedication for. Second Kanji in Level 54, e.g. 贈呈(ぞうてい).
• 一次予選(いちじよせん) = first-stage preliminary contest. 予選(よせん) is also preliminary contest.
• 盲従(もうじゅう) = blind obedience. A similar sounding is 猛獣(もうじゅう) = a ferocious beast.
• 粒揃(つぶぞろ)い = uniform excellence
• 獣医(じゅうい) = a vet; veterinarian
• 落人(おちうど) = defeated soldier fleeing the enemy. One more to the 人((う)ど) series.
• 藩主(はんしゅ) = land owner; feudal lord; daimyo (大名(だいみょう))
