Today I read 7 pages of the Konosuba light novel. They start fighting monsters and Aqua is right away swallowed by a frog. I don’t think they have a chance defeating the demon lord like that.

Orange
Yesterday I had to pick between reading Japanese and working out and I picked the second.
Today I read all of this week’s Orange chapter. The crux of this story is such a delicate matter, and I think it is being done really well. Balancing that with also being entertaining must have been so hard.
Also I haven’t shared pictures of my kitten for a while, so have a few.
Right now, I’m lounging on my couch, and Kiro is laying across my left wrist and on my chest. He likes snuggling this boy of mine.

(unfortunately this does not line up exactly as the lower diagram switches precisely at midnight, whereas the upper diagram switches when I go to sleep )
Anyways, I decided to take on a lot of book clubs and then spent 3 days this week chatting with my new flatmate instead of diligently reading
You can see the effects here: Kafka is far from being done , didn’t make as much progress with Eugenia as I had hoped (but am overall very happy with my progress and understanding), and the Wild Ladies are falling more and more behind
The good news is that I read and finished 人間椅子 this week!
Let’s see how the next week unfolds…

Thanks for the reading.
Thanks for the translation.
I’ve seen this font also! It’s used sometimes for subtitles in anime openings and endings. I’ve never thought of it as hard to read because I’ve always only read it while listening to the song.

I didn’t read because I went on a solo roadtrip. I was exhausted at the end of every day but it was a really good time. I don’t know how much I read in info plaques, maps, and menus but I’m not going to count it this time

Well I went chaos mode today, who could’ve seen such a thing coming I meant to read ブルーロック but I might’ve accidentally started another VN instead? I remembered マミヤ had a demo and its sale was ending today so I decided to check it out and ended up playing it for like… two and a half hours straight? Whoops But yeah it really got me, the last time a game caught me that fast was 999 and well we know how that went lmao. So inevitably I bought it, new adventures await!
I really should’ve expected it though, it’s very much up my alley, weird mysterious character-centric happenings? Yep, that’s the brand I also just really like the writing style from what I’ve seen, it strikes me as very pretty and almost poetic at times but in a way that’s still somehow not hard for me to read. I’m certain I have no real concept of what’s actually going on yet, but I am excited to see (the demo did have different progress than the main game does though so back to square one, but I think it’s all different routes anyway so?? idk we’ll see)
I did also read a bit of ブルーロック but then I got sleepy haha, it’s still a delight as always. Now I just have options for what dramatic media to consume

魔女の宅急便 (16% → 21%)
Spent some more time with Kiki over the weekend. I came to a curious part of the book where この顔だわ is written in parentheses. I’m reading from the version with Kiki riding her broom with balloons attached, so my question is: in the red cover version, is there a picture of the face? The only illustrations I have are random drawings of Jiji every now and then. If anyone has access to the red version of the book, I’d be grateful for any light you could shed on this. I think it’s around page 48 of that edition.
You know, I adore the cover of my version, but I do wish they’d either included the original drawings or had the new cover artist reimagine them. I feel like I’m missing out on a special part of the experience.
In terms of the drawings, when we read it a year or so ago, someone posted all of them as we went along - my book had no drawings in. So worth checking the thread.

Aria: the masterpiece volume 1 – progress report
Yesterday: read up to page 90
Today: read up to page 101
Read a few pages today and I plan on reading around 20 pages tomorrow to compensate a little for not having access to Aria for half of this week.
Some words of note
ハダシ barefoot
老舗 (しにせ) old shop, shop of long standing
瞳 (ひとみ) pupil of an eye
慣わし (ならわし) habit, customary practice
かがみの孤城 60% (page 216)
Only read two pages today. For some reason, after reading just a few pages of 人間椅子 last week, かがみの孤城 seems so much easier than it did previously. It’s more a matter of time that I’m not able to read a lot in one session.
Another good reading day - probably the last for a while!
So apart from the latter, I’m up to date with everything. I allowed myself to read ahead withシャドーハウス by using it as bribery to read the other books.
Tomorrow I’m off but have a bit to do and going out in the evening. Then I have a 5 day road trip. Will probably be able to read variable amounts but think I’ll be quite tired.
Last year I binge read a bunch of short stories from Aozora and I think it made a huge difference in my comprehension and speed. When I returned to regular / modern texts I felt positively zoomy
Took me a bit to read again, but today I read a news article about children in danger all over the world due to war and drought. I’m proud I got to understand what it was about more or less, not so much about the article itself.
Edit 1: By the way, does anybody know why I’m level 4? I’m still at level 3 in WK.
Edit 2: Ah, never mind, I’m somehow level 4 in WK too, but I thought you had to pay to get past level 3?
You will unlock level 4 and technically “be” level 4 but the content of level 4 will not unlock for you until you pay. The instant you pay, all the items will appear in your lessons queue. So yes, only the SRS content up to and including level 3 is actually available for non-paying members. Though you can still browse all of Wanikanis knowledge base (all items site are available to you).
Thanks for letting me know about the drawings in the thread!
I’m going to assume that this is the face in question. She has the dimples that the older witch is described as having, and her hair’s nothing like Kiki’s, so this has to be the one.

I read Happiness Vol.7 a little bit, to 久しぶり from you-know-who.
I have bought はたらく細胞 (Cell At Work) Vol.1, but I am not sure if I would read it in-depth. I don’t exactly like the metaphor, but looking up (fact-check) might be worthy. Also, I like reading comments (and perhaps chatting).

Something wrong with the castle, and some happenings. Painful, and bad thought solution?

Got through the other exceedingly polite letters, it’s like reading those memes where a simple sentence is progressively made as ridiculous and convoluted as possible.
One letter contains the knowledge of the book of super secret sewing-jutsu, which is very kind of them to teach you the ways of and is for the greater good of the world (they assure you), but only if you send money to help benefit the school.
I guess begging letters haven’t really changed in more than 100 years
The third letter had punctuation, was less overly-polite and in shorter sentences, but I’m not even sure what it was supposed to be about, it just read like utter nonsense (I really hope that this was a letter that Soseki actually received at one point because it is nuts).
Japanese found under the leaves
Meowords
貴家「きか」ー Your home (sonkeigo)
屑籠「くずかご」ー Wastepaper bin
秘蔵「ひぞう」ー Treasuring; prizing; cherishing
蹣跚「まんさん」ー Staggering; teetering
Forms
茲 = ここ (here; this place)
塵 = ゴミ (trash)
The endnotes say that Emeritus Professor A reported having some years later seen a stripy envelope matching the description of letter 3 in the house of historian B, who was the owner of the house Soseki was renting at the time he wrote the book. Whether the envelope contained a similar letter to the one in the book it doesn’t say…
(the endnotes do give the full names of A and B, but I am being super lazy because it doesn’t give furigana for them and so it would be a pain to transcribe them here.)
Hi, I seem to be discovering this late, but yes, I am in! Thanks for great ideas and good efforts!
