Question about reading low WaniKani level

Hello,

My end goal would be to read Japanese at some point. Right now it’s mostly impossible by the lack of vocabulary, but I would like to have some way to practice reading the stuff I learned to solidify it. I really like the little example sentences at the end of the cards but it’s a bit easy since you just read the card.

I tried graded reading it works, but it’s not really reviewing what I learned. Also, it’s often either too hard or too easy.

Is there a tool or app that use WaniKani’s API to generate some reading material or reference some existing ones. (I searched the forum and didn’t find anything)

I’m a bit skeptical on AI to produce proper Japanese, but maybe simple sentence would work ?

Thanks

I recommend trying

It’s not free, but it can be synchronized with WK using your public API key, and it has its own SRS
And it’s also, arguably, the best way to jumpstart reading for complete beginners.

P. S. And speaking of easy reading for beginners, I’d also recommend giving a try to

Anyway, best of luck with your studies! wricat

Satori Reader is a very good option, I would also recommend the app Kanji Study. It contains a full dictionary, you can search any word and any kanji you want and read sentences to practice. You can also create personalized lists, one for each Wanikani level for example. But just like Satori Reader the app isn’t totally free if you want full access. You can also buy through the app the KLC Graded Readings Sets who are very good from total beginner to more advanced levels.

These last months I was honestly surprised by the quality of Gemini’s answers, but the thing with AI is that there is always a doubt that it will hallucinate at some point. I think it’s perhaps more useful once you have more knowledge under your belt.

Someone made an Anki deck of the WaniKani context sentences. Great for reinforcing the kanji you’ve learned and general reading practice without being bogged down by unknow kanji.

These are excellent and free graded readers, though their purchased ones are just as good and most importantly enable them to continue to release graded readers. If one is too hard, try another, though at level 5 you might have a lot of trouble with anything but the most easy. I only felt that non-trivial graded readers became possible around level 15 due to the kanji finally being available and thus it makes it possible to know the gist of the content.

Satori ive been told is for around level 24+ but that doesn’t mean you won’t gain anything from flailing around a bit. Maybe you’ll learn something and also build up stamina.
