4️⃣ Quartet 1 and 2 Study Group

Sounds fun! wasn’t familiar with this series before this, but I like the concept. Doing the dictionary of basic japanese grammar with a club has been super fun, and really good motivation.

My schedule would probably be too inconsistent to attend any regular meetings, but I can certainly follow along on the forums

So now I have opened the books

According to the Introduction, Quartet 1 is roughly covering N3, and Quartet 2 N2.
Quoting the book: “each lesson focuses on approximately ten grammatical patterns and expressions, around 45 kanji, and one or two reading strategies.”

There are reading, writing, talking and listening exercices.
I really don’t want to rush the books, so I don’t want to have a too ambitious schedule. At the same time, of course I want to finish them one day!

I’m thinking we might need at least 3 to 4 weeks for each chapter.
I would like to set up sessions for each of the four skills (reading, writing, talking and listening). Of course everyone can decide to attend as little or as many as they want, but I want to have space for all of them.

I suggest that we start voting now for the start date. Then, at least one month before the chosen start date, I’ll make a rough schedule and a plan for how to go through the lessons.

Time to vote!

Select your favorite start date(s), pick any number of them:

  • August 19th, 2023
  • September 2nd, 2023
  • September 16th, 2023
  • September 30th, 2023
  • October 14th, 2023

I think that would be a good pace, because when I used this book at my university (chapters 10-12), we scheduled 2 weeks per chapter.

Thanks for the feedback!
So far the poll gives us a start date for mid August, so I’ll hurry with making a plan

So here’s the plan
It’s called Quartet because it goes through the :four: skills, Reading, Listening, Writing and Talking.
So I want to follow that structure. For each different chapter we can spend a week per skill and have a thread for it, so there is a space to discuss the contents of the books, ask questions, do the exercises and so on.
I will also set up a Discord so that we can practice talking and maybe listening.

The schedule that I suggest is:

Week Start Date Focus
Week 1 Aug 19 :four: :open_book: :one: (Quartet Chapter 1 reading)
Week 2 Aug 26 :four: :writing_hand: :one: (Quartet Chapter 1 writing)
Week 3 Sept 2 :four: :speech_balloon: :one: (Quartet Chapter 1 talking)
Week 4 Sept 9 :four: :headphones: :one: (Quartet Chapter 1 listening)
Week 5 Sept 16 :four: :open_book: :two: (Quartet Chapter 2 reading)
Week 6 Sept 22 :four: :writing_hand: :two: (Quartet Chapter 2 writing)
Week 7 Sept 30 :four: :speech_balloon: :two: (Quartet Chapter 2 talking)
Week 8 Oct 7 :four: :headphones: :two: (Quartet Chapter 2 listening)
Week 9 Oct 14 :four: :open_book: :three: (Quartet Chapter 3 reading)
Week 10 Oct 21 :four: :writing_hand: :three: (Quartet Chapter 3 writing)
Week 11 Oct 28 :four: :speech_balloon: :three: (Quartet Chapter 3 talking)
Week 12 Nov 4 :four: :headphones: :three: (Quartet Chapter 3 listening)
Week 13 Nov 11 :four: :open_book: :four: (Quartet Chapter 4 reading)
Week 14 Nov 18 :four: :writing_hand: :four: (Quartet Chapter 4 writing)
Week 15 Nov 25 :four: :speech_balloon: :four: (Quartet Chapter 4 talking)

Ping @LisaTheReaper
I will start Quartet in August and many people have said that they were interested in joining, maybe you want to join too?
I don’t have much expectations in the participation rate, I have the books and I know I will use them, so I might as well create weekly threads for it. I think it will be nice to have them there for anybody who wants to join / have a place to discuss something about Quartet, live or in the future, like a book club

Thank you very much for inviting me.

I think it would be a good idea to do them together, sadly I am still stuck on Genki 1… for years… So… I might need another few years to get to the point where I will start quartet. (I hope to have more time for japanese starting august, but still…)

I would still follow your threads.

Good luck, hope you’ll get more time soon!
And in case you don’t know about it, one thing that helped me get through Genki, was this website:

I found it less tedious to do exercises that way, and it is very complete, going over everything the Genki lessons teach, including listening and reading practice.

My friend sent me this, not used wanikani for a while. I’m up for this too. I’m sitting the N4 in a couple of weeks, and whilst I will probably still go through TryN4 with my teacher to really solidify the grammar, I will be moving on to quartet. Be good to get a head start on it!

Nice, welcome  will be a lot of fun to be more people doing it together!
Good luck on the N4!

This website helped me so much aswell! It seems this also exists for Tobira now. That might be helpful for Quartet aswell.

I might join the study group too. I was half way through tobira last year but then I took a “little” break. So right now I review Tobira beginning so that I can start Quartet afterwards.
I’m thinking of following Tokini Andys youtube course (Intermediate Japanese - Lesson 1 Part 1 (といえば・なら・とおり・らしい) | QUARTET Lesson 1 (LIVE) - YouTube)

I have already finished Quartet I, but I’m definitely in if you create a group starting with Quartet II

Noted, will ping you if I do that!
I plan to, just depends on how well it goes to do Quartet 1 as a study group. If all goes well and we keep the schedule, then Quartet 2 should run from February 2024, so not very soon!

This sounds awesome!! I would love to join this study group :sunflower: I’ve been wanting an excuse to start Quartet for a while I actually meant to start it in January oops but having a group will 1) help keep me accountable and 2) be waaay more enjoyable than solo-study :3

Haha exactly. So even though we are “starting only in two months” and “might take 6 months to complete”, at least we will get it done, which might be more than we could say if we were just doing it solo

So I’m reviewing all of GENKI and I’ve got 3 chapters remaining so I’m gonna get a cheeky hard start on Quartet because you guys are gonna be a lot better than me at it! At least I’ll be able to participate in it when the time rolls around

Ah that’s funny, same timing for me, 3 chapters left
I will definitely start on the first chapter as soon as I’m done with Genki so I’m able to present you guys with some nice threads on the Quartet start date! Ideally it will give you the opportunity to be as active as possible, without of course forcing you to participate if you don’t want to. Sounds doable right

I’ve had Tobira for a few years and my plan was to finally dive back into it (I barely got past chapter 1/2 the first time), but reading @WaniTsunami 's review, I have to saw I am doubting a bit  now I reaaally want to join this study group, but what’s keeping me from it is that I’m worried I won’t be able to keep with the pace, + that I would actually have to buy the books (whereas I do already have Tobira…) For now, I think I’ll just follow the thread and give myself some time to decide, but I have to say I really like the pace of a chapter every 4 weeks

Happy that you like the pace  the idea is that it should be easy to follow, not stressful, so we don’t lose too many people on the way!
Nice that you are tempted, it’s not an easy decision to commit to buying new books when you already have another option for sure, but indeed every review I see favors Quartet greatly!
I tried to look up if there was a free online preview of a few pages but unfortunately couldn’t find one. So hopefully this study group will give you a good idea of how it’s like!

If you have tobira use tobira. It’s not a bad book and got me reading Japanese. But just be mindful that it does take a little more effort. Tobira does also have anki decks on their site which is really cool.

EDIT: The audio on their site are much more natural speed to. Again it takes more effort, but the payoff might be greater.
