Hey! I’m Pox
I’ve been thinking to start a study log, hoping wanting to update it would make me more consistent with studying…
A little about myself:
I’m an engineering undergrad, I like to draw and a big fan of one piece. I’ve been studying Japanese on and off since 2021, but only made real progress last year. I took the N5 on December and passed with a 105/180 (ik not that good but a pass is a pass).
My Goal: is to take the N4 this July
My resources:
Genki II - grammar
Anki Tango N5 deck - vocab
(still didn’t finish it)
Wanikani - kanji
will supplement this with N4 kanji lists
I still need specific reading and listening materials lol
2/2/2026 - 6/2/2026
This past week I’ve been focusing on getting my wanikani under control since I’ve neglected it for a bit, I dropped my apprentice from 113 - 43, and did all the remaining kanji of level 7 so I can focus on leveling up.
I decided to not do any more lessons until I get to level 8, and then I will focus on level 8 kanji
I’m a bit stressed with uni, exams are coming up and its hard to manage my studies and japanese but I will start genki lesson 14 (2nd lesson of the book) next week.
will keep you updated!!
7/2/2026
I only did my wanikani and anki reviews, I got 2 uni quizzes on monday so this is it for today.
9/2/2026
so– I just realized I kept my wanikani streak for 10 days! I have 1 more kanji to guru before leveling up, so excited since I’ve been stuck on this level for months!
Also I booked an italki lesson for tomorrow, I want try and speak about my experience with learning japanese so far and if the teacher is good I’ll try to take weekly or bi weekly lessons with her since her rates are affordable!
Hopefully the next edit would be about me leveling up!!
Welcome to the study log crew! I’m not saying this is the most awesome community out there but when you’re greeted by a feline and a canine (at least one of which now is a radical, @trunklayer -さん), that should be a pretty decent indication.
First, I want to make sure to mention that this is your learning plan and you should do what’s best for you, so just consider this a question to consider not a hard suggestion of what you should do. Have you considered maybe taking some kanji, some radicals and some vocabulary daily when they’re all available, rather than focusing on the leveling? I’ve done both ways and they both can work, depending on your goals - the important thing is finding your goals and then evaluating what you think helps you get there.
In any case, welcome again, and congrats on the solid start (and the N5!).
Hii lol, am enjoying the welcoming!
For most of my WK journey, i never adjusted or cherry picked lessons, just took them as they appear. But I just realized that sometimes the vocab drain me and fill up my apprentice before I get to the current level kanji.
So I just thought that maybe for level 8, I’ll focus on the available kanji and radicals (the one that unlock as soon as you level up) and then do vocab slower, as I for sure don’t want to neglect it.
I’m just experimenting so nothing set on stone! my current load is so calm just trying to guru the 12 kanji remaining for me in level 7
Experimenting to find what works best for you is always a good choice and using the number of items in apprentice to help you moderate the number of lessons is something I certainly hadn’t figured out by your level either. Seems like you’re well on your way to controlling your learning and thereby succeeding in the long run!
Yeah; another useful practice is to make the next day’s post a reply to your previous day’s post – this way, you’d be able to check your daily posts as a chain.
In any case, best of luck with your studies and other cativities!
Also, congratulations on leveling up!
Okey so, I had my italki session last week, it was fun 30 min of me yapping in Japanese w the tutor. I told her about my goal to do N4 in July and she said I could skip it and go to N3, but I’m too scared to do that + won’t have the time to study for it properly and be ready by July.
I have gurued all my level 8 radicals and slowly doing the kanji lessons. its midterm season so im trying to balance both.
I’m also eager to consume more stuff in japanese, been reading volume one of one piece slowly, having 2 book marks, one for when im just reading casually and the other is me going back and actually look up everything I don’t know, lots of what I’m looking up are common words (per jisho), so its exciting to know that my fav manga is helping me with regular vocab!
