👣 This Week's Guide
  • Not much of a guide this week since its pretty linear
  • Make your way from route 9 through 10, the cave, and on to シオンタウン! Then bask in the ambiance of that lovely music
📓 Pokemon Tips and Tricks
  • STAB moves: when a move type matches the type of a Pokemon, it will do 50% extra damage
  • Status conditions: Inflicting status conditions like sleep give you a greater chance to catch a pokemon
  • Weak Pokemon: If you want to level up a weak Pokemon in a high level area, you can send it out first in a battle then immediately switch to another Pokemon to share the EXP with both
  • HM moves: These moves are necessary for game progression but are worse than most moves and cannot be deleted once learned. It can be a good idea to have a pokemon on your team dedicated to carrying as many of these moves as possible
  • Losing Battles: Note that when you lose a battle you also lose half your money

🔥 Nuzlocke Rules

An optional challenge for Pokemon games to shake them up a bit is to do a nuzlocke challenge which basically involves only catching one pokemon in each area. If you’re interested in trying it out you can make a little “home post”/list for a running count of who you’ve got from each area and to keep track of duplicates if you’re using that rule.

Core Rules

  1. If a Pokemon faints you cannot use it again. (Box or release it)
  2. You must catch the first Pokemon you find in a new area. If it flees or faints you cannot catch another in that area
  3. You must nickname all pokemon you get

Optional Rules

  1. If you already own the first Pokemon you encounter in a new area, you can catch the next instead to prevent duplicates
  2. If you encounter a shiny, you can catch it no matter what, and it doesn’t count towards that area’s catch

There are many other optional rules but these are the basics from Nuzlocke university

:red_exclamation_mark: Note: If you’re playing Let’s Go it’s a little different for 2 reasons: wild Pokemon walk around in the overworld so there’s no random encounters, and you level pokemon up by catching them. Therefore if you want to Nuzlocke Lets Go you can do the following:

  1. Catch the Pokemon closest to you in a new area, or run around with your eyes closed and catch the first one you bump into
  2. You’re allowed to catch extras to level up, but they must be immediately released

Set this thread to “Watching” to get updates!

I ended my clefairy streak at 135. I’m a little peeved because I heard that species candy are guaranteed after 120, and that was not the case. Still, I have over 100 clefairy candies.

The chain gave so much experience that I no longer have any pokemon that evolve via level up.

I found two moon stones in Mt. Moon! I could evolve clefairy and nidorina, but I’m gonna hold off because the game is already too easy.

When I first played FireRed as a kid, I went through Rock Tunnel without flash. It took a month. I also thought that the Power Plant was accessed via a secret exit from Rock Tunnel, so I kept going back and looking. Still without flash.

Hehehe new buddy

These drawings are cute

Spent some time chaining digletts to level up charmeleon and gyarados. Completely forgot to catch anyone on the other routes so I’ll go back and record that

Evolutions this week + magikarp and charmeleon which I forgot to take pics

Ouch, that is so painful even to read

I haven’t gotten to this week just yet, but for those playing the Game Boy originals who don’t mind exploiting a bug for an advantage in battles, those badges are starting to become extra useful.

Badge Boost Bug Details

Four badges increase stats in battle against wild Pokemon and in NPC trainer battles:

  • グレーバッジ raises Attack
  • オレンジバッジ raises Defense (despite the in-game dialogue saying Speed; FRLG fixed this)
  • ピンクバッジ raises Speed (despite the in-game dialogue saying Defense; FRLG fixed this)
  • クリムゾンバッジ raises Special

What these do in battle is each badge increases the associated stat of your active Pokemon by 12.5%. This applies for each Pokemon as it becomes your active Pokemon in the battle.

Due to a bug, this stat boost applies not only at the start of a battle, but every time you use a stat-boosting move.

At this point, we have the badges that boost Attack and Defense. If you use つるぎのまい to boost Attack? You’ll get an extra boost to Attack and a boost to Defense. If you use こうそくいどう to boost Speed? You’ll get a boost to Attack and a boost to Defense.

If you land a critical hit, it ignores Attack boosts, so it’s possible you can raise your Pokemon’s Attack so high that a critical hit is weaker than a normal hit.

I only just learned about this Game Club ;__; and i just started playing Pokemon FireRed in Japanese for the first time, so I’m a couple of weeks behind. I’m basically at the point in the current playthrough where you go into Prof Oak’s lab for the first time and are about to be choosing your first pokemon. But as i try to memorize every single word that comes up, it takes a while.

And I made a flashcards deck with all the words in the game that I wrote about in https://community.wanikani.com/t/how-to-learn-japanese-with-pokemon

It even has the cultural references explained

Wow, this is so cool! I didn’t realize there was a gaming community going on here! I’ve always loved the gen 1 games. Is it too late to hop in with an original gen 1 cart, or is it exclusively the Let’s Go games?

it’s all gen1s, red/green, firered/leafgreen included

At least two of us are playing the original gameboy version (me and @awesometownrocks)

Some of the bugs in the old games are pretty interesting and I didn’t know about this one!

However, I have no intention of exploiting bugs (although, they seem to happen whether I like it or not!) because 1. I want to port them to the Pokemon Stadium games and 2. that includes sending them to the future N64 and GB games, the Gold Silver and Crystal era!

For this one bug, at least it’s only in effect in battle, and goes away after battle (or your Pokemon is defeated, or you switch Pokemon).

Especially this one, as any time you use an in-battle stat-increase move or stat-increase item(!), your stats you have badges for get a boost.

Week 7! The dance crew’s all coming together! We musta came across a lot of Pokemon, huh? Only 2 new ones we’ve seen this week!

Gotta catch 'em all!

I remember this tunnel as the most boring thing in this game, but it wasn’t as bad as I remembered. It’s probably because the first time I played it I went through it without flash too! Every time it branched off and I was at risk of potentially getting lost, the wrong way would quickly run into a dead end, and there weren’t any other bigger forks, so in other words, to me it kinda felt like a straight line. I’d even argue that お月見山 felt bigger because you have to commit to checking out the sublevels a bit more without knowing if they’re the main path or bonus items that might be handy moves

I caught a ワンリキー! And on the dance floor he can be a ワンマンショー!

…Can be? Oh my, I’ve forgotten that I was only supposed to catch Pokemon that I thought would ACTUALLY be good at dancing, not just give them dancing themed nicknames! Well, do ya’ll think he can cut a rug? He’s muscular and likes to show off his appearance and moves regardless of being naked or whatever people think, and I think that can apply to dancing, and strength training and endurance is important too after all!

Name backlog (includes Pokemon yet to evolve!)

The starters we have yet to explain as they evolve, as well as: ポッポ、 オニスズメ、 ピカチュ、アーボ、ニドラン、ピッピ、ズバット、ナゾノクサ、タダツボミ、パラス、コイル、ビリリダマ、ベトベター、ドガース、イシツブテ, コイキング ,ワンリキー, ヤドン, シェルター, タッツー, トサキント, メノクラゲ、ロコン、ガーディ、バリヤード、 ニャース , ポニータ , カビゴン、カラカラ、コンバン

I’ll knock out a few names again next week

Also, I got a little bit of bonus! I finally checked out some of Pokemon Stadium, and I think my favorite part about this era was not just the main games but the vibe of everything, spinoffs like Hey You Pikachu and Pokemon Snap and Stadium and even the anime and cards and overall Pokemon fever were great complements and really brought so much life into the Pokemon themselves where the hardware limitations of sprites on a tiny Gameboy couldn’t

I wanted to try putting my current Pokemon in one of the cups in Stadium, I got 3 Pokemon that were the perfect level range, 25-29, but they couldn’t enter since they had too late of evolutions. But I look forward to the rest of the cups, most of them are for Pokemon between levels 50-55! I’ve been saving my moves wisely

It was so nostalgic and I forgot about the announcer, and the voice clips were pretty impressive! Compared to something like, say Star Fox 64, in that game my eyes were always darting to read the subtitles (but maybe that’s because who would’ve thought it’d be difficult to hear during a space dogfight with lasers and bombs and explosions)

And I could play the GB cart on my tv too! And for some reason the logo’s all red now, and the characters were green instead of red like on my GBA SP

I remembered that game crashing a lot though, it even happened this time, I guess my connector isn’t that good or can come loose from the controller easily or something. I suspended the game to see there was a control config option, then it crashed when reloading.

In the Stadium games, if you beat your opponent without any of your Pokemon fainting, you’ll earn a continue, so if you lose you can continue a fight where you left off instead of battling up to 4 trainers in a row again for gym leader castle, or 8 for the cups. However, to prevent the player from cheating and reloading if they lose, suspend point data would be erased whenever you came back to the game. And not only was the game at risk of crashing if the GB connector came loose (although this can be prevented by transfering Pokemon completely to the cartridge, not just borrow) but also my N64’s reset button was stuck, so very rarely you’d have no idea if the game would just suddenly reset

And finally I was checking out some of the manga and just one page I wanted to share

Welcome aboard @skradacz and @torpedrick

Feel free to share your progress in the previous threads if you like!

I got behind before my Japan trip and now I haven’t been in the same hemisphere as my Switch and game for 2 weeks now. I hope to catch up soon-ish!

Week 7 adventure

ロケット団 is not happy we always win our battles… Revenge with a 4-on-1?

Nope! Mysterious lady appears to help us

The foggy cave looks kind of cool before using ヒジュツ・カガヤキ

For my shiny challenge then I tried to chain Charmander because everyone whos seen shiny Charizard knows how cooooooool it is  But because of the rare spawn rate it was more annoying than relaxing. Then immediately after I decided to stop I used the cave stairs the exact moment a shiny spawned  I only saw the sparkles at the edge of the screen so no idea what Pokemon it was. Bye bye..

No new badge this week so I have time. will try again next week

Arriving in シオンタウン

This girl is mourning her ガーディ while I’m walking with my shiny… :anxious_face_with_sweat::anxious_face_with_sweat::anxious_face_with_sweat::anxious_face_with_sweat::anxious_face_with_sweat:

Showing off the new outfit we received from a nice old lady inside the lobby.

GHOST :anxious_face_with_sweat::anxious_face_with_sweat:

We get chased to the entrance when a ghost catches us so better come back later

Team Rocket is having ghost trouble too and is up to no good. Cliffhanger for next week

Adventure Log 8: Not much to say! But my from-trade team members are reaching the “you’re not the boss of me” stage as they pass above level 30.

Hidden Items (GBA)

Just dropping the screenshots here:

I took one in the tower, but accidentally deleted it before sending it to my computer, so here’s one from online:

Voice Checker

Speak to the pink-haired girl in the house in the center of town. Also, read the book on the table in the same house.

Battle Entry Animations

I’ve got cave screenshots now.

Fighting a weaker wild Pokemon? The screen fill in black clockwise.

Up against a stronger Pokemon? The screen beaks into shrinking blocks.

I think this next one is if you’re stronger than the trainer. The screen simms as it becomes…horitonzal stripey?

Which means this one may be when you are weaker than the trainer. A Monster Ball phases in, then the screen blacks in a circle shapre from the outside in.

Week 7

I made quick work of Rts 9 and 10, catching Rain the コラッタ on 9 and Bzzt the ビリリダマ on 10. I was hoping for an アーボ, since I like snakes, but since I lost Nimh last week, コラッタ’s are no longer duplicates according to my ruleset and I had to catch the first encounter. I probably won’t end up training her, since her Timid nature is awful for a Physical attacker. Oh well…

Bzzt was useful, since I could teach them Flash and not use up a move slot on any of my main team members. I had to swap Moss out of the team for the duration of the cave trip, though. I snuck around the trainers just outside the exit so I could heal and swap back, then let Moss fight as many of them as he could manage to try and catch up in level a bit.

The cave itself…could have been a nightmare. I got super lucky with RNG and caught an イワーク, the rarest of the possible pokemon there. But then I nearly lost Mack, Dyno, and Cello to Magnitude 10’s from consecutive イシツブテ fights. I got so lucky they hung on until I could limp back out of the cave to the Pokemon Center! At that point I decided I desperately needed a water type, so I spent several hours walking back and forth just inside the cave to train Yen, and only made my way through to the other side after he evolved.

I have not yet explored シオンタウン. I’m not sure if I want to brave the tower yet…
