Payment options other than credit cards

Hi there!

I’ve been using WaniKani for a while and so far I really like it. I just found out I’ve reached 100% on level 3 and because I still find it fun and exciting to learn kanji I’d like to upgrade to premium. However, I am not American and (therefore? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ) find the concept of credit cards a bit uncomfortable…

So I was wondering, is there any plan to offer some additional payment options? I’ve found some older topics, but the most recent one I found is almost three years old and didn’t offer a solution,except to send an e-mail and hope for the best.

Some options I could think of:

  • Expanding the donate option in the app. I can buy apps in app stores by adding the price of them to my monthly telephone bill. If I could buy premium through a store I wouldn’t even need to authorize anything, so this would probably be the most convenient option for everyone.
  • Adding PayPal. I know they’re not exactly seller friendly, but people can use PayPal by letting them collect money from your bank account. Like the telephone bill option the payment would still appear at the end of the month, but it’s free and easy to use.
  • Adding a European payment service provider. Probably the most difficult option to implement, but the easiest to use for end-users when done right. I would use iDeal, Belgian people Bancontact, German people Sofort, etc…

Are there any plans yet to add more payment options than just credit cards? I’m patient, but it would be nice to know roughly when I can continue past level 3. I’ve read that in past years around Christmas there was a discount on lifetime subscriptions. Wouldn’t it be really cool if WaniKani could offer an easy one time payment together with a great deal like that around the end of the year? I can definitely see myself going for that and I’m sure I’m not alone :slight_smile:

If you send them an email to hello@wanikani.com, they can help you make the payment through PayPal.

Just as a side note: there are no official WK apps out there. Those are third-party. ^-^

Use a debit card.

Credit cards aren’t widely used where I live either. I just used my debit and everything went alright.

How did you do that? Just not fill in a CVC number? And how did you authorize the payment after that?

It seems like this ‘virtual prepaid Mastercard’ only charges a 1% upgrade fee. Worth checking out as well. Don’t have any experience with them; just throwing it out there.

I don’t know how debit cards work where you live, but where I live, debit cards have CVCs and don’t need authorization. Though, you do have to activate online payments beforehand, so to speak.
