When doing lessons, when opening a vocabulary item there is no audio-auto play. It plays when I go to example and back to overview or if I use shortcut to play it but it would be nice to have it automatic ![]()
Hey!
I tried this on my end and auto-play is working.
When I do a Lesson and get to the Reading tab on a vocab Lesson, the audio plays automatically.
Could you tell me your device and OS details? Or better yet, get a screenshot from here:

Are you running any scripts?
What do you mean by âexampleâ and âoverviewâ?
Hmm⊠Already done lessons for today but I was pondering it a bit and I thing it was for you (https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/ăăȘă) which only had 2 sections (like âoverviewâ and âexample sentencesâ one? canât recall well now)
Ah, I gotcha. Yes, the tabs for kana vocab are Meaning and Context. When you run into that one again, let us know if you have the same issue.
As far as I know kana only vocabulary donât have audio. Could that explain the problem OP ran into?.
Will try - I was thinking I was going crazy as it appeared ârandomâ ![]()
If you look into https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/ăăȘă it definitely have audio ![]()
I see. Then the audio for vocabulary is usually played when the reading tab is reached. Kana only vocabulary donât have a reading tab. Could that explain the issue?
I want the audio played when I first see the lesson item which has relevant audio recordings attached/visible on it (it does play the audio if I go to the example page and back to the first page so it looks like weird missing playback trigger)
Thanks for this info. I have written up a report and sent it to engineering. This may or may not be intended behavior, I donât know, but weâll see what they say.
Could you provide your device and browser details in case they need them?
Go to this url:

and take a screenshot.
Thanks!
Quickly was provided an answer! This is expected behavior and a limitation of the browser.
The browser prevents auto-play of audio when the page loads. And when you go from one Lesson item to the next, that is a new page, and thus a new page load. So audio auto-play is prevented.
But when you go from slide to slide on the same page (on the same Lesson item, that is) auto-play works as expected.
So itâs a limitation of the browser. The feedback is still valid, that you want it to auto-play when opening that kana-only item. But for now, know that it is expected to function the way it does.
oh, cool! at least my sanity is restored ![]()
thank you so much! ![]()
Just to have an example (https://www.wanikani.com/subject-lessons/-1648335598726228072/9202):
So kana-only lessons/vocab DO have audio ![]()
@MichaelR is it really a browser limitation? Some sites (Youtube being the infameous example) do start playing right after opening the page so it SHOULD be possible. AFAIR there is a browser permission for audio/video autoplay so maybe WaniKani could hook into that, ask for the permission and then play the audio?
It is a browser limitation, that is what I was told by the engineering team. That doesnât mean there is NO way to auto-play the audio, just not on page load. This is my understanding of the situation.
In YouTubeâs case, itâs their own video player that is playing the audio, not like audio âin the browser.â Iâm sure there is a workaround and the dev team knows of the issue, so maybe in the future that could be implemented. But the way things are set up now, the audio runs into that limitation.
