New People Questions! ~~~<3 [Lost?! Confused?! We're here to help!]

oh yeah, also, how long does it take to finish the first 5 or so levels of wanikani if you finish all the lessons and reviews on time, is it like a couple weeks or more like a couple months?

An average level of wanikani takes a week, this usually breaks down into 3.5 days of radical review and 3.5 days of kanji lessons. The first two levels are an exception, because they are 2x faster. Therefore to finish level 5, if you do every single review at the time it comes up, it will take you about 2x0.5 weeks + 3 * 1 week = 4 weeks, so about a month.

this might not be the right place for this but i need help with kaniwani. I tried to sign up with my email and a new username and i put in my token but it keeps saying loading on the dashboard, its been loading for like 15 hours now and i dont know what ive done wrong.

also dont know if this is the right place to post this but i need help finding a script/plugin that i cannot find anywhere and would be very useful to me.

it looks like this but i dont know what its called or where i can find it, if i can get a name or a link that would be very much appreciated
thanks,

For this I’d try asking in the Kaniwani thread

And for this the best place is either the userscript request thread, or you can also just make a completely new one.

Though to me this seems like it’s just giving you, how many reviews you’ll have in the next hour and next day, which the review forecast already does and in greater detail:

thank you
the reason i wanted that script is because it says when my next review will be on the dashboard instead of checking all the different kanji/vocab/radicals for the next time but thanks alot

Yeah, that’s what the review forecast is for, if you check on the image I’ve sent, it tells me that my next review will be on friday at 2am.

MAybe at Lvl 10 I am not that new anymore, but I am still a bit confused about when I finally get to burn items … my level up emails indicated for the last few times that ppl start burning stuff at lvl 10 … so … here I am, level 10 … and when I look into the details, my earliest enlighten items are not coming back for for review until OCTOBER! … I probably hit lvl 20 by then! So, i keep churning on …

That email is really misleading, especially considering how much WK seems to advertise you can complete the whole thing in less than a year!

If you get all reviews 100% correct then you’ll burn an item about 6 months after you first added it to the SRS. It doesn’t correlate to a level whatsoever simply because everyone goes at different paces.

I was level 20 something before I got my first burn.

Hey, I came from the topic “Started my Journey hopefully to work as a doctor in Japan”. Since that topic was locked and I didn’t know how to reply or reach out to you I had to reply on this comment over here so sorry for my ignorance I could reply somewhere better but I am not aware where. I have read all the 61 comments in the replies there. I also have been researching since the past 2 years so that’s why I had to read every single reply. My aims are the same as you i.e. to become a doctor in Japan. I was looking for information on the Internet till I found out your topic and I came to know that there is also someone else who is in the same path as me. Like you stated in one of the replies I am also in a dilemma about the whole situation as of now. I would like to discuss the topic again with you, I want to hear about your update since that post was so long ago and want to know about your thoughts as of now. It will really help me as well and I hope I can be of help as well. Since my aims are the same as that topic, I wanted to reach you out for discussing about the matter (anything can work discord, reddit, etc. etc.), I signed up for learning Kanji but more importantly I also came to discuss about the topic. I am aware that your activity is not frequent as of now but if you get a chance to read this, please make sure to reply to me, Im looking forward to hearing from you. I’ll be waiting, thanks.

Hi, how to speed up progress, i did first radicals for 4-5 times, i probably learned them, i want learn whatever is next

As soon as your radicals hit Guru, the corresponding Kanji will unlock
You can find info about how this works here and here.
There is no way to speed this up, but after the first few levels you will probably have more lessons than you would like anyway

It is slow at first. That is a common complaint for new users. Most of is were thinking the same thing when we started. It is due to the timings of the srs system. In a couplee levels you will possibly be looking for ways to start slowing down the system.

Hello everyone, newbie here, started like 10 days ago and just reached level 2 :upside_down_face: Some things are still confusing. Like the reviews, I just reviewed 91 items in one go and was wondering if it’s possible to maybe split that in half? What would happen if I did half of my reviews and just clicked on the homepage after that, would they count or would I have to start over? Don’t really dare

Assuming you’re not using a script to “delay processing”, once you’ve completed both the reading and meaning the item is considered done and if you leave the page you won’t have to do it again until the normal SRS timeline.

The better way tho is to click the button on the bottom left of the field you type in that had a analog clock icon. That’s the wrapup button. It’ll take any unfinished items you have left and add some new items until you have 10 items to do. After the 10 it’ll take you out of the review page and back home. (Note the phone apps tend to only make you do the ones left unfinished but that’s specific to those third party apps).

While doing your reviews if you hit the wrap up button it will stop after ten more. Some days I start my reviews and just hit wrap up immediately, then I can go through in batches of ten.

If you go back to the home page, it won’t make you redo a kanji you completed (meaning you already got it right after getting it wrong, or got it right on the first try) but if you got it wrong and then didn’t get around to getting it right, it stays in your queue. I believe it might actually reset it though as if you never got it wrong at all, which is going to mess up the SRS system (if you come back and remember it from five minutes ago and it gets marked correct, it’ll move up a level instead of down like it should). So you should really stick to using the wrap up button.

Oh! I was wondering what that clock is for/how to use it!
Thank you guys, I’ll try that

Hello! I just started Wanikani a couple days ago, very excited to get started~

I have a question about reviews for kanji with multiple on’yomi readings–will the reviews eventually ask for me to answer with more than one reading? For example, 下 can be read as either “か or げ”, but I only need to answer with one reading to pass the review. Just curious about how this works, sorry if it’s a dumb question! Thanks

Only one, as far as I know.

That’s mostly in the vocabulary where you have to do specific readings.

Some kanji do tell you they want another reading, if I remember correctly, but not both.

Ah, gotcha! Guess I’ll look forward to learning/reviewing vocab for that then.

Thank you!
