NANA―ナナ― Volume 4 👩‍🎤

Yeah not super comfortable with the under-aged members of the entourage. The faint protests of ナナ saying that ジン shouldn’t drink while he’s busy emptying the bottle are not super convincing either…

Given that he mentions not being affected much by alcohol, I thought there would be a gag where they would reveal that he had been drinking alcohol-free beverages all along, but it never came.

Yeah especially since she’s not concerned about him but just about the image of the band

Haha, yeah… no… there might be a prostitute in the manga, but it’s not Nana…

More chapter 10

Did a reread because you can never get enough of NANA.

New vocab:
ダサッ、from ダサい、uncool, lame
スネ夫, another Doraemon reference (reminds I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet, even though it was picked by the ABBC recently)

Found more things that I had liked the first time around too.
I think this manga is doing pretty well with consistency and following up on things, it’s all in the details sometimes.
Like last chapter they were complaining from the changing weather, and now the normal bartender from Jackon’s got sick because of that.
Or how it was mentioned early on that Hachi got tickets for Trapnest (and she had a poster in her room from the beginning), and now they arrived.
I also was surprised last chapter that they were for the first row, but now in this chapter it’s explained that it’s because she got them for her home city. Makes so much sense! :chef_kiss:
(Also as a bonus, if Hachi manages to drag Nana along there, then Nana will meet Natsuko  )

Talking about ダサッ, I only now realised that Blast is short for Black Stone. It’s amusing that it doesn’t really work in English even though those are English words.

Aha!
I didn’t chase that one down, but I did wonder what that was about.

ch 9

asshole (can i swear??)

Girl, Nana can 乱暴 Shouji as much as she wants

I read the 9th chapter right after my workout so I’m feeling extra angry and worked up and can’t articulate my thoughts lol, so I’ll save that for later.

But one of my fav panels was the one with the Trapnest poster above the bed where Nana and Hachi are sleeping :sob:

Chapter 9
  • Nana giving Hachi her jacket to wear…

  • Ooph yeah the reveal of Shouji and Sachiko’s relationship is so painful. But the fact that Nana is ready to go to war is so badass, lol. The way Sachiko handles the situation actually makes me respect her a little bit more. She admits that she is in the wrong. Her teary-eyed, grimacing face on page 28 made me feel for her! Meanwhile Shouji is just so passive and can’t even look Hachi in the eye.

  • The panel of the two of them sleeping under the Trapnest poster…so touching! And someone else pointed it out earlier in this thread, but I didn’t think about the fact that Ren is the only one looking at the camera in that poster! Definitely some symbolism going on there.

  • The conversation with Junko is so lame but so consistent for her character. Hachi does stick up for herself and call Jun out a bit more, but it still stings. The panel of Hachi still sitting there in the dark hours later! Ugh! At the start of the series, I liked Junko more and felt she was a good foil to Hachi. Now I think it’s becoming clear the ways in which their friendship has run its course.

  • Nana has a バイト now! Though we still don’t know what it is, lol. Not that it matters, really, but I just like picturing it! I’m imagining another bookstore, record store, something like that. I can’t imagine her being a waitress or something similar in the service/hospitality industry.

Yes, also that interaction in the middle of it was quite funny :joy:

Chapter 11

At the beginning of the chapter, when Nana came to see Yasu, I wonder what that was about (as he did). Probably she is thinking about the concert and seeing Ren soon..

Ouch that was mean…

Was really nice to see Hachi and Nana patch things up :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Haha, Nana’s face

It sounds funny to me to hear 美里 talk to the first person by saying her own name. A bit childish maybe? But I don’t know if it’s the intention.

In any case, wow, a big chapter plot wise. I mean, I think every chapter of this series actually brings new things plot wise, but still, Hachi finding out about Nana and Ren, that is BIG!! (I had totally forgotten about where and when that would happen! I figured at the concert at the latest)

And her reaction was so cute too xD

Good luck to Hachi for not saying anything for the next two weeks! (on the bright side, she hasn’t thought of Shouji at all (almost) during the whole chapter!)

Also, maybe it’s time to write down who is smoking what:
Nana: Seven Stars
Yasu: Black Stones (cherry)
Shin: Black Stones cherry too?
Ren. Seven Stars
Forgot if we saw some others before, will try to keep my eyes open.

New vocab:
八つ当り(やつあたり)
口ごたえ
逢い引き
後釜 (あとガマ )
音信不通
興味本位
根掘り葉掘り

Went camping this weekend and got so much reading done!

Chapter 10
  • I’m obsessed with the illustration at the start of the chapter.

  • Misato-chan! I remember reading this as a kid and how much I disliked her because I also felt jealous of her bond with Nana  Even reading now I can’t help but feel the sting on Hachi’s behalf! The scene of Hachi and Misato rallying concertgoers to stay and watch Blast is so funny, though.

  • I think some people had said they were avoiding the anime while reading the manga, but the scene of Blast’s first concert in Tokyo is really good! The music from the anime is SO so good and I think has sort of become synonymous with the series in my mind. This was the only video I could find, though, and the sound is sort of bad quality:
    https://youtu.be/xAMpv3vCt6Q?si=NxJZKHuw8Y-TJxKV

Chapter 11
  • Yasu’s work-life balance seems so chaotic! He basically lives in a soundproof cave and works every second he’s not practicing it seems like? I’m a lawyer so I am always really curious about his work-related scenes lmao.

  • The scene between Nana and Yasu is so complicated and rife with unspoken feeling. I am of the camp that believes Yasu has unrequited feelings for Nana, but will never act on them out of loyalty to Ren. I think that Nana also has some vague feelings for Yasu – or, at least she sees him as a protector/source of strength and is afraid to admit as much.

  • I love all of Nana’s soft facial expressions when Hachi says something that really touches her. Hachi never notices them, I feel like, but as a reader these are the rare moments when we get a deeper look into Nana’s psyche.

  • Hachi’s three hour lunch break rjgfdsjgdf. And then her boss just totally gives up on reprimanding her in the end lmao.

  • Ahh Misato spills the beans about Nana and Ren!

  • REN FAKE-OUTS OVER! REN IS HERE. The fact that Ren and Nana say the same thing into the intercom made my heart hurt a little bit…

Already working on Chapter 12! :strawberry:

I’m planning on watching it and I don’t want to have toooooo many episodes at once, so I’m hoping to watch it in 10 or so episode bursts.. (do you happen to know roughly what episode we’re on now?)

I also have the first movie which I think I bought and gave away (or borrowed from Tsutaya and ripped to my hard drive ), does anyone have any idea how far into the series the movie(s) go?

In terms of the anime I just checked and we’re at the episode 15/16 mark (episode 15 is Blast’s first live show!)

I actually think that the movie ends right around the end of volume 4/start of volume 5! It takes some liberties with the timeline I think so it might not be as clear cut, but I know one of the final scenes is Nana and Hachi going to the Trapnest concert, which happens at the end of vol. 4. I’m blanking on what volumes the sequel movie covers!

Speaking of the movie, I have been wanting to watch it again with the re-read! I watched the trailer and I remembered that the version of Nana in the movie is a lot more stoic and doesn’t have the same gentle OR funny sides – she’s kind of just cool as a cucumber the whole time in a way that’s disappointing. Does anyone else who has seen the movie feel this way?

I haven’t seen the movie before but I know that people did complain about how they changed the relationship.. so that probably is part of it.

I was super into Glorious Sky (but the Hyde version of it, lol) when it came out so I’m like 80% watching it for that (although having not seen it before but listening to that song compared to the music I’d expect ブラスト to make it’s kinda a hilariously wide gap but I can see why they didn’t make the song a super hard punk song :joy:).

And it sounds like I should probably start watching the anime now! I don’t want to have 25 eps hanging over my head by the time I start :joy:

ch 10

It’s so interesting to see the shift in Hachi. How she thinks about Nana all the time, gets jealous when other people get close to her, thinks about her at night, wonders if she’s weird, and starts imagining her future in terms of “I’ll always be happy if Nana is with me” instead of something like “can’t wait to marry a guy and have children.”

The transition is so smooth and well done that the angst in ch 10 is really hitting me hard. Especially the part where Hachi feels like Nana is distant and unreachable when she’s on stage or talking to other people. Like she can’t have those cute little private moments between them all the time anymore. I’m personally a huge fan of ambiguous relationships where both people seem a little obsessed with each other, can’t stop thinking about the other person, keep crossing lines either subconsciously or intentionally, and even get jealous. And it’s done so well here I just want to sit on the floor for a few minutes after finishing each chapter. I know it’s only going to get worse in the best way possible, if that even makes sense.

Such good facial expressions and narrations in this chapter. :pinched_fingers: I want to read it again before I move on to the 11th one!

Does Yasu live in a padded room…?

Wait is the whole building padded?!

I wonder how much it has to do with being a lawyer and how much is has to do with the Japanese workplace. I’ve seen a lot of media where coming home late and then continuing to work late into the night isn’t really even questioned. (I think it’s changing a little bit now, but not that much).

I can’t be convinced that Hachi doesn’t have some sort of.. complicated feelings for Nana. (I mean I would)

erm.. sorry… 奈々

Hachi’s 奈々’s boss (is she her boss, or just a 先輩?) is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters. I mean, I wouldn’t be able to spend more than one minute in a room with her, but she still cracks me up every time.

The nosebleed from imagining about Nana and Ren’s secret affairs :joy_cat:

And finally…

Is Nana becoming my new favorite BL!?!?!

So much good plot development in this chapter.. ugh, I might have to slip ahead into chapter 12 a bit early this time

I like that the real Ren re-intro is done through a ナナ fake-out. Subverted my expectations.

A big slab of text in small font at the beginning of chapter 12, I hope it won’t be too difficult to read for those using the bookwalker version…

Ahaha I can’t unsee this now! I had imagined it being like one of those modern concrete apartments? I’m not sure if concrete is soundproof though for the drum set…?

Too true!! He is also the only one with a “big kid” job, too, it seems like. Either way I have 10000% decided that if I ever move to Japan I will give up being a lawyer because I am not trying to Do All Of That.

That might be just me :stuck_out_tongue: nothing against the anime but I’m too scared of changing the image I already have in my mind of the characters, don’t know if that’s makes sense, that’s just how I feel.

Haha yes!
