I’ve never heard it used as “I’m leaving for the day.” So there’s that. But the retirement meaning of
退 is common enough.

Twin Peaks fever, baby! That’s what’s to blame for my recent new (but not great for everyday use) vocabulary. WOWOW, the network in Japan which primarily broadcasts shows from overseas, will be airing Twin Peaks: The Return (official statement from WOWOW’s 社長 here).
But until I can get my hands on a Japanese dub of TPTR, I’ve been tiding myself over with this treasure: Albert’s dubbed intro from the original series!
Among the great words:
埋葬する（まいそうする）to bury, “to put in the ground”
解剖 （かいぼう）pathologist
徹夜 （てつや）all-nighter

Picked it up from watching the Japanese dub of Moana
If you don’t mind me asking, did you actually get an official copy of the dubbed version or did you find it off a website? If the latter, could you share the link? I have a very strong desire to watch this in Japanese

It’s against the forum rules to share links to pirated stuff, so it’s more about whether koichi minds. But presumably it shouldn’t be hard to find on your own if it exists.
Unfortunately it was on a plane; I’m not sure where else would be the best place to acquire it legally. Dubbed Disney is definitely a fun way to practice if you get the chance though

調節（ちょうせつ）means regulation, control, adjustment, etc.
I’ve learned about the various ways this could be used:
温度調節（おんどちょうせつ）temperature controls/regulation
ラジオを調節する（らじおをちょうせつする）tune a radio
音量を調節する（おんりょうをちょうせつする）adjust the volume
いすの高さを調節する （いすのたかさをちょうせつする）adjust the height of a chair
居留守（いるす）- pretending to be out when the doorbell rings. I even did it earlier today >_>

I like that; it sounds kind of like the English words “elusive” or “illusion”, which kind of go with the situation.

If you can remember that mnemonic for 10 levels, you can use it for 留守（るす）, a fearsome leech otherwise.

For what it’s worth, 子宮 is definitely more like “Uterus”. It’s used in all kinds of science-y words.
I think 解剖 is anatomy and 病理 would be pathology.
Today I learnt 症候群(しょうこうぐん、syndrome) (at the operation room).

I learned 囲炉裏 (irori: sunken fireplace) from Fatal Frame 3 and also from Neko Atsume. Lawl.
