I’m watching this one right now. It’s super-wholesome and sweet.
I’ve watched a lot of wholesome/non-adult cooking anime.
Isekai Shokudou
Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori
Isekai Izakaya Nobu
Muteki Kanban Musume
Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi
Chuuka Ichiban!
Yakitate Japan
Yumeiro Patissiere
Koufuku Graffiti
One of my all-time favourites is Toriko, but that has a lot of adventure mixed in as well.
I love anime very much as well, but his opinion doesn’t piss me off, because, to be fair, it is somewhat warranted. Anime does do a lot to ruin its good image. It’s no reason to be so triggered as you two have been. If you can’t handle opinions that differ from yours, you probably shouldn’t be on the internet.
I can deal with opinions that differ from mine but I am allowed to say that I consider these opinions to be ignorant, wrong and offensive.
Agreed! But there’s no reason to do so in a hostile way. Exchange of ideas and opinions is one of the main reasons for the internet! But let’s do so in a cordial way, even if we are supposedly correcting someone on a view we see as problematic. It’s OKAY to disagree STRONGLY with his view that all anime is over-sexualized, because you are right, that is NOT true. But his view is UNDERSTANDABLE and not inherently evil. It comes from a very easy to understand misunderstanding. Nothing worth getting angry about. Can we rebut one another? Absolutely, but let’s do so in kindness. That is more likely to change minds than railing at each other.
That’s rich, after you were all like “LOL TRIGGERED” and implying I shouldn’t be on the internet five minutes ago.
I didn’t laugh at you anywhere in my response. And I’m not throwing vitriol at you in my words, that’s the difference.
To be fair, you may be right. Even though I did not laugh at you, I probably shouldn’t have used the term triggered, especially not italicized. I apologize for that.
It sure sounded a lot to me as if you did.
That’s one of the downsides of the internet. Tone is not necessarily clear. I was not intending to do so. If it appears that I was, I apologize. I have not been, nor am I currently, angry at any of you.
Its also funny that you think I’m the hostile/triggered one, and OP is nice and innocent.
Ignoring the racism angle, to summarize:
OP: enters already pissed off All anime is sexualized garbage
Me: I disagree, there’s good stuff
OP: Screw you
yeah… I’m awful
Nowhere did I say you were awful. I can’t make that generalization since I don’t know you. I think jabbing the racism card is unfair, as he made it clear he was typing on his phone and just abbreviating and he didn’t realize it in the moment. We don’t live in WW2 era, so that kind of thinking doesn’t come naturally right away. I’m fine with you disagreeing with his views on anime, I disagree with him as well. But I think the racism charge is extremely unwarranted and unfair.
YouTube channel Kimagure Cook, some of his videos have English subtitles.
It’s a cooking channel focused on rare or not your typical seafood. It is quite chill and informative as he takes the time to talk about the animals he is going to cook and talks through the entire process, from buying ingredients to serving. He also puts instructions or Japanese phrases in Japanese subtitles, I’ve been recongizing some kanji form Wanikani.
Warning not for the faint of heart as he cleans and fillets fresh fish/shellfish/octopus by himself or shows sellers doing it.
Yes - this is what annoys me. If you make a strong claim such as that, you should be willing to defend it, and certainly not outright tell people they’re not allowed to challenge it.
Regarding the racism - well, OP seems to have corrected that bit so I am willing to assume it was a honest mistake.
Thank you Francoalex! He talks so fast I almost thought I had the speed setting wrong haha and I managed to catch about one word in 100. And I don’t even eat much fish(!) But it’s fascinating (not least from a biological point of view) and great to listen to as as you know he’s bascially describing what he’s doing. I have subscribed Thank you.
I offer this in return. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcCeJ3pQYFgvfVuMxVRWhoA/videos The videos are of sort of everyday Japanese city things, and he includes japanese and english subtitles.
(Now I’m going to get sucked into scouring youtube for interesting things… but this is good as I think it’s about time to clock off work).
I don’t have good recommendations outside anime because anime and news articles are my main immersion media. There are some very good anime that aren’t sexualised beyond Studio Ghibli’s stuff, but I don’t know enough about them to tell you what they are. I’ve just seen snippets. Most of what I watch involves romance, so fan service is almost always a given.
The only mainstream anime I can vouch for given your preferences – almost no sexualisation, especially because most of the women in the story are presented as innocent, strong and focused on their goals – is The Rising of the Shield Hero. However, there’s a hot springs episode, even though I really found it quite asexual. I don’t know if you’ll tolerate it, but the anime was really popular when it aired, and a 2nd season is coming out this year. The hot springs episode aside, I can literally only think of at most five brief instances that can count as fan service, but they’re very mild. The source light novel generally avoids sexualisation as well. (I’ve read 16 volumes of it, and the protagonist and the heroine reportedly don’t do anything remotely romantic until volume 19. It’s that slow and steady.) It’s not a series that’s popular because of any sexual themes, that’s for sure.
If anime doesn’t interest you regardless of what I say, then ok, no problem. Here are some alternatives. I just don’t think they’re as extensive as anime, so you won’t get as much immersion time:
- Street interviews on YouTube were mentioned. One particularly good example, I think, is Ask Japanese. Questions are asked in Japanese and the conversation is subtitled. Explanations directed at viewers are in English though.
- This is tangentially related to anime, but it’s not an anime channel: That Japanese Man Yuta occasionally does breakdowns of anime character speech, probably as a means of promoting his Japanese course. The videos are really good. If you prefer though, you can skip those videos and watch his street interviews, which are also subtitled. For that matter, the main point of his channel is street interviews, not anime. He speaks good English, so rest assured what he writes in the subtitles is comprehensible.
I had one other vague idea earlier, but I can’t think of it right now… oh, actually, unless you’re facing region-locking, you can try watching NHK Video On Demand stuff. A lot of it is free online on their English website. Most of the programmes are in English, but when the hosts meet people, especially in travel programmes or documentaries, the interviews are conducted in Japanese with English subtitles. You could use those for immersion, though they’re likely to be quite challenging in terms of vocabulary use.
Thanks for replying in my place, but (this is also why you are doing it in my place:) I just want to advise you to abstain from feeding the trolls and the toxic people who are present even on these quite friendly forums. You are wasting your kind energy on people who are only bent on hurting others to make up for their awful lives. These people have been extremely rude in this thread which they wouldnt dare to do if it wasnt for their keyboard warriorship behind the safe anonimity of their screen in mommy’s attic, figuratively speaking. This is one of the reasons I almost never use social media. Thanks for being reasonable and kind but the best thing is to just ignore them and care 0% about their “opinions” so you don’t give them what they want - bullying you
@contributors
Thanks for all the awesome suggestions! Part of the reason I posted this thread on these forums is because I know Wanikani attracts alot of very serious learners who have a lot of “life experience” navigating the maze of learning a highly complex language, and are often knowledgeable about certain “niche” ways to find immersion or study tools. I can definitely see that reflected in your answers! I havent only picked up things like Dictionar of Basic/Int Japa. Grammar as well as Bunpro and Torii, but this thread also brought me some more ideas about increasing my listening experience.
To the kind people who pointed out respectfully that not all anime is sexual, I never said it was but only that the quite pervasive trend of child sexualization gets on my nerves, I should perhaps have elaborated in my OP but I know there is good anime to and to those reading till the end of this post: check out Non Non Biyori on Crunchyroll, it’s safe and there’s currently a third season airing after many years. Very special series. Also nice is Usagi Drop, which depicts raising a child in a mature way, but skip the manga that manages to still kinda weird you out in the final part which was fortunately not included in the anime. A third recommendation, albeit containing some weird camera angles, is Squid Girl, a very funny mix of slice and life, humor, shounen action (sometimes) and a few other genres I’d say. There are several good recommendations left but due to the varying degrees of fanservice I will leave them unmentioned.
Oh wow what a massive resource! I LOVE FFX, but would take too much effort and time to play through it in Japanese. Watching this though, despite being HUGE, is quite manageable! Well, might only watch partly, but I love it!
