Two videos from the YouTube channel Joo. Her channel is in Japanese, and is about Korean. These two videos were more chill, but if I like her videos I want to watch more and learn about Korean in Japanese!
(Technically not a なつめさんち video but) another video from the recent collaboration with さいとうなおき and なつめさんち!
Episode 3 of Medalist
(And also, not tracked but I feel like mentioning) A few episodes of Detective Conan I watched with my family (so eng subs)! For some reason in this batch of episodes there were a few lines here and there that just weren’t translated/given subtitles? And I wasn’t necessarily focusing on the Japanese, but with moments without the subtitles it felt pretty good that I was able to immediately understand and translate haha. I’m definitely in a “wow I can understand everything, this is awesome, I am a gOD!!!” streak of language learning… we’ll see how long it lasts haha
I have to ask, since I’m a Detective Conan addict and I’m in the middle of yet another rewatch of the series - which episodes? Also, I’m a bit jealous that your family watches anime with you, since I’m the only one in my family who likes it. Did they enjoy it?
I’m really not sure how, but I guess it’s been almost a week since I last posted here. Somehow I just kept not getting to it - whoops… It’s been a bit of a messy week for me, for various reasons. I was able to watch/listen to a bit of 名探偵コナン every day, though I wasn’t really tracking my level of understanding for each episode. None of them felt super easy or super hard, though.
1月18日 - 名探偵コナン eps 243 - 244, plus the new ep 1150 that came out that day.
1月19日 - ep 245
1月20日 - ep 246
1月21日 - ep 247
1月22日 - ep 248
1月23日 - ep 249
Kind of unusual for me to only watch one ep a day, especially when it meant watching part 1 and part 2 of some cases on separate days. I just had too much else going on, though… Hopefully this weekend I’ll have the time and motivation to watch a bit more…
Today was some more Zombie Land SAGA. So this is a show I’ve seen many times before, in both sub and dub, but I’m watching it raw this time. One thing I think is coming through a bit clearer in the Japanese, is a slight difference in Kotaro’s personality. In particular, he’s a bit more pathetic from the start, whereas I think before he’s always felt like it’s part of a larger than life act. Which, I mean it is also, but I think if I’d watched it like this the first time, his breakdown arc in Revenge would have been less suprising?
I learned the reason that the Drive Through Tori manager sounds like a radio ad done by a small business owner and not a voice actor is because… that’s basically what this is. The restaurant is real, and the restaurant owner is played by… the actual restaurant owner. Normally I’d be a little put off by the blatant product placement, but honestly it’s handled well.
Of course in the picture on the wiki of the real life gatalympics, there’s an Irish person there. That’s probably an Ireland jersey too lol, it’s the right shade of green with the white trim.
Had a bad day today so have been consoling myself with an hour of watching the anime 「君の膵臓をたべたい」It’s my second time watching it and I’m enjoying it just as much the second time round!
Watched episodes 6-8 of Zombie Land Saga today. This is where the shows starts to flex its muscles a bit. “Oh, you thought you were watching a cute zombie idol comedy? Well, you are, but we can do sooo much more than that”.
Between having the best trans representation in an anime that’s not about LGBT themes (and arguably, it’s the B plot of the episode, and still hits hard), revealing Kotaro’s reliable side and the changing attitudes to idols and modern fame, consequences of overwork, etc. these are 3 banger episodes, and I can never not cry at the end of episode 8.
And part of the reason I give this series so much leeway for the things like the local business ad-like nature of parts of the Drive In Tori episode is because while these episodes on their own could be justifications for why people should watch this show, they’re not outliers. Episode 9 is just as good, and season 2 has the talent show episode, Saga Jihen, and Junko’s second episode that all hit just as hard.
Episode #812 of the そこあに podcast. I was trying to think of what podcast to listen to, and then a song from the anime Pluto came on shuffle, and I remembered they have a Pluto episode I hadn’t yet listened to haha
Detective Conan Convo
Uhh we’re not very far at all haha, I think the one we just finished was episode 70? It was the three part night baron murder case
DANG, mulTIPLE rewatches?? That’s awesome, you’ve seen all the episodes?
It’s cool to see your updates, that’s true dedication, to Conan and to Japanese study! That’s the best though, right! When you love something enough that it makes it much easier to keep studying/keep going with the language
Ah, yeah! It’s mainly my mom that watches it with me. It feels just sliiightly embarrassing to say “I watch anime with my mommy” but nAHH, I love my mother and I’m glad we have similar interests
The two of us watch anime and dramas together (we just finished a drama called “After-School Doctor” hehe), so it’s fun that we always have something to watch! We started watching Conan together, and have just continued since then. We’re not very far (and probably won’t get super far at our pace lol), but we both really enjoy it!
Watched 名探偵コナン ep 250 yesterday (seemed harder than some, so maybe 50% understanding?), and eps 251 and 252 today (about 70% or so, which seems to be my average). I was planning on watching the next two as well, but my Mom ended up messaging me and we ended up chatting for an hour instead. Oh well - I always enjoy talking with my Mom, and the eps can wait til tomorrow.
Detective Conan discussion
Glad you’re feeling better today! Being sick is no fun!
Ah, yeah, eps 68 - 70 - that 3-parter is fun.
Beware - I chatter when it comes to things I like, so this is going to be long. No need to read all the way through, unless you’re actually interested.
This is what I consider my 5th re-watch, but it hasn’t necessarily been every episode, every time. My first watch was back in 2012/2013, and ended when I caught up to the current releases (ep 697, I think it was?). I still let myself watch fansubs back then, so I had English subtitles. The second watch was in 2016, still with fansubs, and I got somewhere into the mid-300s before the streaming site I was using got shut down. I had to jump all the way to 754 (the first one available on Crunchyroll).
That was both the final straw for not letting myself watch fansubs anymore (which I’d already felt guilty about), and it was the final push I needed to finally do what I’d been saying for years I wanted to try - start learning Japanese. Since then, I’ve been slowly but surely saving up to buy the dvds from Amazon Japan so I’d have access to all the episodes again.
I’ve watched the first 100 or 200 eps way more than 5 times, since ever since then I’ve been doing “watch until I reach the last of my dvds and then either take a break or start over”. It’s only been in the last couple years that I’ve finally had enough of the dvds for me to feel like it counts as a ‘full’ re-watch - I did that twice, getting most of the way through the 500s or so (with some eps skipped since I didn’t have them yet).
I started this fifth watch last fall. I’m only missing movies 16 - 18, and about 20 episodes in the mid 600s/early 700s at this point, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to buy those before I get to that point and it’ll actually be a 100% complete re-watch this time!
Yes, I’m thoroughly addicted - but I love the show, I love re-watching things (not just this show), and it’s been a great way to measure my progress, going from always needing subtitles, to relying mostly on summaries/visuals, and now to actually understanding a decent percentage of the actual dialog.
I think it’s great! My Mom and I have a lot of interests in common, but unfortunately (for me) anime is not one of them. We do watch a bunch of other things together though, and she’s starting to get into a few live-action J-Dramas lately on Netflix, so maybe someday I’ll be able to find an anime she’d enjoy! Plus, we end up having informal dinnertime bookclubs when I go visit, where I’ve been able to chatter at her about the manga I’m reading, so…
So after failing the “watch zombie land saga episode 8 and not cry” challenge, I guess I also failed the “leave zombie land saga with 2 episodes left” challenge.
That said, I actually think the finale episodes of season 1 are two of the weaker episodes in the series, but even then they have their moments (especially Yugiri).
