Listened to the first ever smalltalkinjapanese podcast from back in 2019: はじめまして!〜成人式(せいじんしき)って何?〜 What is coming of age ceremony?](1. はじめまして!〜成人式(せいじんしき)って何?〜 What is coming of age ceremony? - smalltalkinjapaneseの単語帳)
I have been off on a series of various adventures for the last few weeks and haven’t been updating my logs or anything, but I have still been listening to things!
I started watching this vtuber a while ago because she does cooking streams, but saw she was playing minecraft and went to check it out. Early on into the stream i got jumpscared by a very familiar voice, because she runs into 雪兎ちゃう, who was the streamer I watched play the konbini game and do ラジオ体操 during her stream a few weeks back!
I’ve also been really enjoying watching 綿詩あや and みるはる, both new to me since my last update, who both happen to be playing ゼルダの伝説時のオカリナ right now. It might have gone on the switch online n64 emulator or something, because it feels like suddenly everyone is playing it all at once
Still been listening every day, but didn’t quite hit 100 hours last month (with voiced vn time it worked out to about 70). I also am retiring my study tracking spreadsheet, so I wont have any more fun time statistics for my months unless I specifically decide to track them for a challenge again, and probably wont be updating the forums as much
First WaniKani post ever yay
(any tips on formatting are appreciated idk how to make it a “home post” but would love to)

Today was a good listening day!! I listened to the 釣りたい焼き chapter of zenitendou, and it was awesome, had good enough comprehension that I was fully following the story and everything. It actually felt kind of like I was listening to an audiobook, and not trying to pound my brain into sludge with a mallet. Next is the hair salon chapter though which felt way more difficult, so probably won’t be as fun.
Welcome!!!
A home post just has your calendar and whatever else you want to update as you go along so you can refer back to it. Then you can do updates as individual posts as you listen to stuff.
Welcome to the community, and to the challenge!
You can format your home post however you want. The most common things to include are a calendar and the resources you’re using. If you want to make a title, you can:
- bold it
**bold**
- make it big
big
# or use a hashtag
And if you’re ever curious about the formatting of a post, you can always reply to it, then click the speech bubble in the top left corner of the text box. That will quote the entire post formatting and all, and then from there you can copy what you want to use.

I’ve discovered that if I don’t get my listening done by the afternoon, it’s probably not going to happen that day.
Since I last updated three weeks ago, I can only count four days of listening. And all four of them were with English subtitles and I made a nonzero amount of effort into listening. (Two days of Xenoblade Chronicles before I stopped listening properly, watched もののけ姫 and FMAB on DVD on two other days.)
Today I decided I was going to watch episode 1 of 佐々木と宮野 with anime club. The only version I could find has English subs so I decided I’d grab a note book and attempt this whole intensive listening thing.
I spent an hour on the first three minutes of this anime. This is not sustainable.

Can I ask if you’re listening to an audiobook of Spice and Wolf?
Yes. I started with reading alongside (alternately, not at the same time).
I love that anime & have the light novels of my bookshelf waiting for me to get brave enough to open them. Can so ask where you got hold of the audiobook?

I think I heard Maki using Kansai dialect for a second
Audible JP membership. And that also requires Amazon JP account, which need a new email, a random JP address, and VPN to Japan, to create. After that, I downloaded and played each audiobook without needing a VPN. Payments also don’t need a VPN.
I listened with monthly membership price, though alternatively audiobooks can be purchased for each book.
Thanks for that - very useful! When I’m ready to read, I’ll look in to creating an account

4989 American Life Podcast | 30min |
I was having focus issues today so I ended up doing less listening than I technically had time for. That’s fine though.
The last few days I was listening to bits of 4989 American Life. As much as I’m looking for something else, it’s like I still want to know how she’s doing, lol.
I found a series on NHK world about Hiroshige (artist in the same time period as Hokusai). You can’t turn off the subtitle, but these are well done.
Here’s the page with all currently available dramas. Last year I watched the first episode of Kurara about Hokusai’s daughter and it’s available again! I recommend that. Also, there is a silly overly dramatic drama called Kiriko’s crime diary. I don’t know if I recommend it, but it did draw me in so that counts. In that case you have to look specifically for the subtitled version, otherwise it’s dubbed.
Am watching “Tokyo Swindlers” on Netflix - a kind of predictable crime show but it’s still holding my interest. The latest “Spice and Wolf” episode was delayed so I’ll have to wait till next week for that.
As far as podcasts go, listened to a Sayuri Saying podcast (#206) where she talks about contemporary beauty standards in Japan - how more and more invasive (and costly) procedures are being normalised. She recounts her recent experience at a busy beauty salon in Osaka, likening it to being on a conveyor belt in an American supermarket.
