I thought I’d try broadening my listening and trying out at least 5 minutes of something someone else is listening to. Today I tried @polv 's Bangladesh video (previous post).
lol, wow, you’ve got to have good skills to catch his Japanese against all that background noise. Super interesting, but total sensory overload. New country (interesting images) + confusing or loud sounds + Japanese
but I survived
polyv video 5 minutes
Had to go to the clinic this morning, so listened to some Japanese with Shun on my way there and back:
Ep. 151: Morning bird, night owl (6 mins)
Ep. 150: Salsa (7 mins)
Ep. 149: Japanese BBQ (6 mins)
Ep. 148: Driving (6 mins)
Ep. 147: Death penalty (6 mins)
Ep. 146: Second-hand store (7 mins)
Also watch the first 10 minutes of the latest episode of Boyfriend (with subtitles) while wolfing down breakfast when I got home.

Been having trouble finding motivation to listen recently, but managed two videos from Sayuri Saying today. One video was about the gaijin card, and in the second one she mentioned that discount stickers in Japan are usually red and yellow, which immediately made me think of Bookwalker’s sale stickers.

Watched with subs but understood half without, it was better than I expected and the animation is so nice.

Listened:
・Japanese With Shun ep 76 + Genki L13
・Tanaka Radio ep 1-3
Shun was too close to the mic again in ep 75, so I scrolled through the “More like this” tab for a podcast that seemed like it wouldn’t be too annoying and settled on Tanaka Radio. Her voice is quite nice. She doesn’t post very often though and only has 15 episodes out, so I’ll have to search for another one yet again soon enough…
Watched:
・Birdie Wing —Golf Girls’ Story— 第14〜25話(完)(英語字幕)
Birdie Wing has a surprisingly deep and well-written story for being an overly ridiculous girls’ golf anime (like, early TeniPuri levels, probably). I’m a little confused on part of the timeline though, but idk if that’s just me not paying enough attention.
(Also, Birdie Wing is counted as season 1, season 2 on both MAL and the site I’m watching it on, but really it’s just cour 1, cour 2, so I’m counting it as a single 25-episode season. Because that’s what it is.)
Listened to another conversation between Sayuri & Miku - this one was about what to do on rainy days
Caught up on Boyfriend - relieved that Shun was able to apologise to Dai & amazed by Dai’s generosity of heart
Yesterday I listened to the next 10 minutes of 4989 American Life ep 7. She moved on from grocery store impressions (more interesting than you’d think I swear) to how much Japanese she reads (in the beginning she was focused on 100% English immersion but now she listens and reads to more Japanese again, but I need to listen to it again and continue to get the rest of what she’s saying there. )
Also yesterday, I experimented with how I’ll follow along with her transcripts to start doing some intensive listening (and get kanji reading practice as well: 2 for 1!) It’s got to be easy and on my tablet, so I settled on splitting my screen so I can keep youtube open on top and the transcript under it. I’ll try a method @taiyousea talks about in her log to write a summary after each pass of the material and see how my understanding improves. So listen first - summarize what I got out of it. Read plus listen (not sure if it’s even worth doing all in one go or not). I’ll probably read and listen to paragraph sized chunks, and do lookups if needed. Then listen again and write a new summary and see what nuance I gained. It must be a lot. I did something similar with Satori (without the summaries) and felt like it helped a lot to learn new things because if I miss it the first time and it’s key to increasing my understanding by the end, then it becomes more memorable than if I didn’t try to struggle through it a bit the first time.
That’s quite intensive! It’s not something I’ll do all the time or every episode. I’ll do it now and then and just see if I feel like it’s getting me anything or not. If I’m still listening to other episodes daily then I should notice my comprehension gradually improving. Full speed conversational Japanese isn’t something I’ve spent much time with until this challenge, so there is a lot of low hanging fruit. Like in the first episodes I was like, she says hibi a lot. Turns out that was the Ultra basic word 日々 that is no problem reading but hadn’t yet featured in my Japanese listening.
And I’m continuing my challenge to try other sources from you all. This morning:
That’s a great find! I like how calm she is and it’s actually interesting despite being very easy. I think she hit a good pace and word choice to be helpful for learners. I listened to episode 2 where she talks about making language mistakes. I really like how she adds in a bit of her own experiences and gives a couple very achievable tips for hard words.
She speaks clearly and if I miss something it’s really easy to go back and look at the Japanese subtitles. I’ll keep this as a good choice when I’m too tired for Utaco’s (4989 podcast) full speed high energy

Was very busy today and was going to just write it off as a missed day until I realized that I listened to my latest J-pop playlist for about 45 minutes on the metro/bus.
I will need a new playlist once school starts. Does anyone have suggestions for additions? Current faves: Yorushika; Hitsujibungaku; Mrs. Green Apple; Galileo Galilei; Radwimps… stuff along those lines.
Just listened to the Sayuri Saying podcast where she talks about the recent sauna boom in Japan, sauna etiquette and her experience in a sauna in the country. This episode was of particular interest to me as we’re experiencing a sauna boom where I live - there are some particularly fantastic outdoor ones.
This is probably all I’ll have time for today listening-wise

Didn’t end up doing much today, listening-wise. I came up with a couple new fic ideas and finally finished reading the first chapter of シンデレラ・ティース in one go and then didn’t have time for the anime-watching I’d had planned.
Listened:
・Tanaka Radio ep 4

Watched Drawing Closer on Netflix with Japanese subs.
Today: watched the second half of an episode of Terrace House: Opening New Doors without subtitles

Enjoying this so much
5 more minutes of 4989 ep 7. I’m super tired and that tanked my concentration.
After having a break, I’ve returned to Easy Japanese to listen to an episode about 山菜の天ぷら. I’ll probably listen to some other podcasts when I’m out and about later today but decided to sit and listen to this podcast as I’ve recently had a problem with being able to hear it when I’m driving.
I think all the listening I’ve been doing is paying off. I feel like the Japanese “switch” in my brain has turned on again.

Watched:
まほあく is pretty darn cute so far. I’m glad I gave this one a shot.
I’m also really glad I ended up giving マッシュル a shot. When I first heard of it, I thought it sounded stupid and wasn’t even remotely interested. But I was pretty much hooked from the first ep. It’s so good, and also hilarious, and also I have acquired yet another autistic son. I’m glad too that not all of the villains have been irredeemable; I mean, that’s pretty much to be expected from a shounen, but, still. I had been thinking it was unfortunate that UmeYuu’s character was evil, but he’s started rethinking his views after facing Mash as essentially the final boss of this arc. Also it seems like he never once saw his mother as weak even though it was her kindness that got her killed, which is interesting. Even though he did away with kindness afterward, it was still only the man who killed her whom he hated.
I should have expected the fanservice in 異世界失格 though; it might have been funny if not for that. So that’s dropped.
The 柚木兄弟 subs are not only obnoxious but rife with mistakes and typos (did no one do even an ounce of proofreading? Actually, I’m pretty sure it was sloppily copied from an MTL—and by someone who thinks they know English but very much does not, at that…), so I’m trying my best to ignore them. I wish I could turn them off… Unless I can successfully get my stupid ADHD brain to ignore them completely, I’m not sure I can watch more than one episode of this at a time because of their sheer atrocity, which is a shame because this one also seems cute.
Watched this video from Kaho of her doing a trail run:
Then my recommendations served me up a similar-ish looking channel so I watched this video:
Although looking at her channel she seems to have a lot of van life type stuff which I’m not sure I care for.
love it. The drums at the start are so energising! (But that chicken dance warm-up?
) and best aid station I’ve ever seen (10:40) ![]()
