I also have auditory processing issues, but I’ve been trying to focus on native stuff that is interesting to me, instead of *only textbook stuff. I highly recommend the sesame street YouTube channel in japanese! Fun lighthearted stuff is less stressful for me. Anyway, good luck to us both!
Stellari’s Home Post - Spring Listening Challenge
Hey, this is going to be my first challenge here.
So, I’ll trial and error first, and find my way through that challenge. I don’t know yet, what’s working best for me, so that’s a bonus goal!
But here’s my basic to go plan:
As I started to learn English back in school- I was actively listening to music. Doesn’t sound like much, but it was a game changer!
So, looking up the lyrics, translating and shadowing those / singing lol. Yep, I’ll do the same for Japanese now! As an enthusiastic Spotify-Song-Digger, I’ll be happy to find some fresh new (karaoke) favorites.
Hmm, besides that, I’ll do a mix of watching drama and other content on YouTube.
Audio only is still a no no for me.
1st Week
Sooo faaar~ I’ve managed to listen every day to some Japanese.
Which is awesome, especially because I moved across my country 2 days ago and was busy with preparation before and after.
I’ve discovered a Spotify radio show, but I won’t link it here just now, I still don’t know if I like it enough to recommend.
But I’ve noticed even if I understand like 0.5% - I can’t hide the grin lol. It’s cool. I bet you know what I mean.
Besides that, I’ve started to watch some dubbed shows on Netflix with the Language Reactor Extension for my browser, very handy!
(It allows you to watch shows with two different subtitle languages and even more than that, (it recommends videos on YouTube for your current level etc. but I don’t use the other functionalities just yet.))
2nd Week
Mhh, yesterday it happened. I lost my streak- …thanks eastern! The day got just too busy, but no time to worry. The first thing I did in the morning today was to listen to some vlogger running around in Tokyo.
3rd Week
Well… it was a challenging week. Not only did I struggle with this challenge, but also with my regular reviews. I guess I have to establish a new routine, now that the moving part is mostly done. I’ve been more into organizing and exploring lately. But hey, I didn’t completely lose track, which I’m happy about!
So, I got to play around with ChatGPT and added an extension that allows me to listen and talk. It’s fun, but doesn’t work 100% of the time. Still, it’s pretty good. Since I don’t feel confident enough to speak to native speakers yet, this is a nice bridge to practice with.
kind of pop → Kaze Fujii - Shinunoga E-Wa
kind of indie → WurtS - Spellbound
kind of mainstream, but karaoke fun → YOASOBI - セブンティーン
4th Week
Woah, the first month is over! Even though I didn’t check all the day’s - I thought it will be worse. A lot happened this month for me in my personal life, but even though - I managed to keep listening.
Yay!
I noticed, that start to understand more words from the lyrics, even if the part was spoken/sung quite fast. And after every additional listening, I noticed another word.
For the next month:
- I’ll try to more consistent and increase the length of the sessions.
- Shadowing the content.

Omgg this looks so fun. It’s not tooo difficult to understand as well, thanks for the rec!
Joining again. Having a nice march and want to keep it up.
Mainly watching dramas/anime with subs but I want to get a bit more into sub-less stuff even if it’s mostly random noise but it’ll probably help in the long run. It just makes it hard to focus, but I’ll try.

Hi everyone! Thanks for hosting the challenge again @omk3!!
I had really fun participating in the Winter Listening Challenge, as it was the first time that I got into listening to podcasts in Japanese on a regular basis. Other media recommendations on the thread were also super helpful! My goal for the challenge this time would be more specific as I’d like to finally get into watching anime with only Japanese subtitles. The anime I’m going to watch is March Comes in Like a Lion/3月のライオン which I’d already started watching in March😅 I’ll also keep listening to podcasts and watch YouTube videos & doramas for immersion. I hope that, unlike in the last challenge, I’m able to check in regularly and share my listening updates on this thread. Looking forward to participating in this challenge with y’all!

I’ve been going back and forth about whether to try this challenge again. I feel like I never follow through with it or make time for it - I guess that’s why it’s a challenge I think what I may do is try to add it on for the second month of the challenge season (like I did last time). Starting two challenges at the same time feels like a bit too much at the moment. So here’s my home post, see you all in May xD

I’m on a movie kick lately. Importing Japan/Hong Kong region Blu-ray and DVD of Hollywood movies from my past. I’m sure I’ll mention those often in the future here.
Still watching YouTube periodically. Japanese Ammo with Misa.
Getting into Netflix now. Quartet, couple episodes left there. Since Way of the House Husband book-club is holding until the next volume releases I’ve been able to start the anime and live action content.
I’m joining up with the Zero Escape: 999 Visual Novel club too. There is voice acting, maybe that will constitute practicing as well.

Last listening challenge was my first and it was kinda fun. Since it ended I haven’t done much listening so I’ll try this again. Clearly even a little listening is better than no listening.
April 1st
Okay, it looks like this listening challenge is going to be almost entirely accompanied by reading. I’ll be listening to the かがみの孤城 audiobook while reading along, which I’ll also be tracking in the Read Every Day challenge. I’ll also be counting the Zero Escape:999 visual novel as listening. I’ll be reading along in that one too, but I won’t be tracking it in the reading challenge.
So I listened to about an hour of audiobook today. It bored me to death, but I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve listened to this part several times before or whether it’s the book itself. Truth is I chose this particular book because I wasn’t terribly interested in it, so theoretically I wouldn’t mind missing details, but it turns out I just can’t do that with books. And of course I had missed a few bits that weren’t entirely negligible. So anyway, I’m hoping that my interest will pick up once I reach parts that I haven’t listened to before, but for now it does feel like a chore.

I haven’t been listening to Japanese in a long while, so I thought why not! I wanted to watch more let’s plays on youtube and 牛沢 has been playing RE4 (and RE2), so I might check that out /o/

Although I’m travelling, I still managed to listen to a short YouTube video and read a few pages for the first day of the challenges today! I also had a lot of conversations with people, but I never count customer service interactions as listening…

Practicing listening somehow always ends up on the backburner for me so I’m hoping joining this challenge will help me get some in consistently. I’ll mostly be listening to Vtuber streams, the occasional drama, the Flesh & Blood drama cds with the club, and then there are a couple of anime this season I’m thinking of checking out.

Hello everyone!
After joining the read every day challenge, I thought it would be nice to join the listen every day challenge as well. Especially since listening is something I neglected somewhat in the past. And while skimming through this thread here, I read that FlamySerpent mentioned watching japanese Let’s Plays on Youtube as listening practice (thanks!). And since I love watching let’s plays, I will do exactly that.

Thanks to MissDagger for providing those nice calendar templates! (in the read every day spring challenge thread)
Today I watched this video about marriage by Sambon Juku. I feel like it was a little too advanced for my level but I did my best to understand as much as possible. Seeing the words on screen while he was explaining them helped a lot because I could guess the meaning based on the kanji which made it easier to understand.
In the afternoon I had an italki lesson where we mostly talked about marriage as well. I could understand most of what my teacher said but answering her questions was a bit of a struggle because I didn’t know the vocabulary that I needed and couldn’t figure out how to describe the missing words using the words that I did know. But this is not a speaking challenge, is it? So just focusing on listening comprehension, I’m very happy with the lesson. I will try to prepare a bit more next time to improve my speaking as well.

Today went great. I watched these two videos:
Podcast: 1 ep from Nihongo Con Teppei
I was really surprised while watching the first video because I didn’t have any subs on, and I understood most of what they were saying! Definitely super rewarding, and I’m all pumped up to continue.
I hope to do more listening in the following days, but for now, I think this is a great start! My brain can only take so much after binge studying sesh today lol

Unfortunately pretty busy today so I will have to wait to try out some new stuff tomorrow. I was hoping to start trying something that has a transcript so I can listen, and then check my understanding against the transcript and then listen again, but being rushed meant I just clicked on basically the first thing I saw

残月記 : 月景石 Ch.2 [2-3/13]. Actually listened once before, then read. Now listen. Perhaps next time listening with synced reading would be nice. Perhaps I understand most now, but that also depends on attention, and energy.
I will probably start 残月記 : 残月記 once I finished reading the previous story (Ch.9). I can’t be sure of listening alone.

始めましょう!
I had a pretty good start today. I listened to Radio Kishiwada for about 15 minutes, then listened to the short story 浦島太郎 (Urashima Taro) while reading the Japanese, after having read the English translation and studied the vocabulary list.
I think I’ll update my goals. I’ll try for 20-30 minutes a day: 50% listening to native Japanese without assistance just to see what I can catch, and 50% lesson material with supports (simultaneous Japanese reading, vocabulary lists, etc.). Both seem fruitful for me right now.
April 1st!
Today I went to a Japanese conversation exchange meetup that happens on the first Saturday of the month in a city near where I live. We talked about April Fools Day, and whether any of us had ever broken a bone.
I also watched the first episode of Rilakkuma and Kaoru, with Japanese subtitles. I was able to understand a good chunk of it just by listening, but the longer sentences sometimes required a bit of subtitle reading!
