🔊 🎙 Listen Every Day Challenge - Spring 2023 🌼 🌱

Welcome to the “Listen Every Single Day” Challenge, Spring 2023 edition! :blossom: :seedling:

A little history: Last summer, @KJules had the awesome idea to start a Listen Every Day Challenge, where we challenged ourselves to listen to something in Japanese every day. This was inspired by the also awesome Read Every Day Challenge, which has been going on continuously since 2021 with great success.

If you missed the previous Listen Every Day Challenges, feel free to jump in on this one - we would love to have more people join in the fun! Whether you’re an expert at listening or just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate.

So what is it? This is a place to set your own goals for listening, and to share what you’re listening to with all of the rest of us! This will be a positive, encouraging space to share and get advice from each other, or just to keep a study log for yourself. Make it into something that works for you!

Whether you are an expert or just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate in this challenge! To quote @KJUles quoting @windupbird quoting @Redglare ():

This is a thread for people who:

:bookmark: want to spend time more time listening
:bookmark: want to improve their comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge!

Time frame: April 1 - May 31

This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! This thread will be up and running until the end of June, so you can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you.

Your listening materials can be whatever you want, anime, podcasts, youtube videos, audiobooks, TV, JLPT listening quizzes - you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp:. “Listening” can be interpreted creatively, if that helps keep you motivated!

Would you like to participate?
  • Yes
  • Yes, but I might start late

I am notoriously bad at practicing listening, therefore I will try to use this challenge to put more focus on my listening! I think I’ll use these as my resources:

  • Flesh & Blood drama CDs
  • Some audiobooks I accumulated
  • Videos that people recommend in here

See y’all in April!

Perhaps a class of materials that is quite solid to do, is audio that has full transcripts. A fraction of modern literatures may have audiobook on audiobook.jp, and classic ones may even have on YouTube. YouTube Premium allows hiding the video / turning off the screen, if it’s not in YouTube For Kids.

YouTube may be a nice source of materials, if there are some text inside the video.

Things with JP sub, or non-JP sub, may be considered; but I find that some unique listening skills may be excluded. Also materials with transcripts, there must be some time to listen without transcript (but maybe read later or earlier).

Without text guidance, I find it a little difficult, although it depends. I would experiment what I can in the future. Also, screen-off, listening-only, is also simply for convenience, or mood, but not necessarily perfect comprehension.

I would consider doing exercise books, for N2-N1, or I might find some alternative listening exercises.

:books: My Study Log
:open_book: My home post in the Read every day challenge

The last listening challenges have been really hard, because I’m less enthusiastic about understanding spoken Japanese than reading books. There’s also the difference between passive and intensive listening which has let me slack off a lot in the past, because at least I was listening to something, right?

I think I will have to work on turning this into a regular habit, so that the listening in itself will not become a chore but something I will do automatically. For this I think I will dedicade my commute home to listening to Nihongo con Teppei, with a readthrough of the transcripts when at home.

pyr_3’s Spring 2023 Listening Home Post :hatching_chick:

Listening is my weakest skill by far and my first trip to Japan is planned for November. So I’m hoping to improve a little until then.
I will use beginner listening material roughly around N5/N4 level and keep taking italki lessons every 2-3 weeks.

My listening practice has been all over the place so far, and its mostly been focused on youtube videos (which usually bore me, unless they’re about books or nature), and shows or movies with English subtitles (which I do my best to not rely on too much). I have a single audiobook that I’ve been sporadically listening to, but I’m missing too much for my liking, so I keep relistening to the same parts instead of progressing, which is frustrating. In this challenge, I’d like to make a real effort to progress with that audiobook. I’m thinking of maybe accompanying it with the text if just listening gets too annoying. I’m fine with missing stuff on youtube videos (because who cares), but I can’t do that with books, I’ve found. We’ll see how it goes.

Count me in!
Thanks for hosting again @omk3 !
Listening is my weak point so I find listening practise frustrating - these challenges really help to motivate me to do some listening practise, even if its just a single episode of Nihongo con Teppei for Beginners each day, or something with english subs (that I try to ignore…).

I’m going to try to push myself to do a little more in this challenge than I did in the last, but life may get in the way!

I’ll give it a go. I’ll try for 15 minutes a day using japanesepod101 lessons, Pimsleur Japanese lessons, Japanese radio if I can catch the talk shows (Radio Kishiwada), and maybe some Netflix shows, watching first without subtitles (はじめてのおつかい and Midnight Diner).

Thanks for getting this started, @omk3, and good luck, everyone!

Natively :tulip: Study Log :tulip: Reading Challenge

I feel a bit awkward saying I’m joining this again seeing as every time I say this, I end up only listening for a few days  But I actually have been much more consistent* with listening practice this last month, so I will try again.

* More consistent meaning a few times a week instead of like once a month. Still not at that “every day” consistency

My goal won’t actually be listening every day, but 3x a week. But of course I’ll try for every day

I’m going to be watching shows and movies with subs and starting up Comprehensible Japanese again. If I decide to listen to podcasts again, this time I’m going to use transcripts, unlike before where I used to avoid transcripts. Just trying something different I guess

Hello, friends! This will be my first listening challenge, and it’s not something I’ve spent a huge amount of time practicing or doing consistently. I suspect it will take some time to figure out a good method, but I do have some ideas for stuff to try out. Thank you to @omk3 for hosting, and looking forward to the challenge!

Thanks for hosting @omk3!

Today I continued my recent pattern of rewatching the first ~30 min of movies I’ve seen before but which I couldn’t recall the difficulty well enough to rate on Natively…and then rating them. I unfortunately don’t have access to every Japanese movie I’ve watched before, but I still have a several to go until I’m done.

I also recently started an audiobook (I want to say the title is something like 俺ではない炎上) and I’m following ok. The second chapter made a lot more sense to me than the first one and I’m debating going back to relisten to chapter one now that I have my bearings.

My first listening challenge! I’ve never prioritized listening actually, and I’m very scared of it because of my auditory processing issues. But here I am!

I don’t really have any specific listening goals, (because all my goals are centered around reading Japanese with ease), but I’m very curious and need a slight change in my routine :sparkles:

I also have auditory processing issues, but I’ve been trying to focus on native stuff that is interesting to me, instead of *only textbook stuff. I highly recommend the sesame street YouTube channel in japanese! Fun lighthearted stuff is less stressful for me. Anyway, good luck to us both!

Hey, this is going to be my first challenge here. :raising_hand_woman:
So, I’ll trial and error first, and find my way through that challenge. I don’t know yet, what’s working best for me, so that’s a bonus goal!

But here’s my basic to go plan:
As I started to learn English back in school- I was actively listening to music. Doesn’t sound like much, but it was a game changer!
So, looking up the lyrics, translating and shadowing those / singing lol. Yep, I’ll do the same for Japanese now! As an enthusiastic Spotify-Song-Digger, I’ll be happy to find some fresh new (karaoke) favorites. :musical_note:

Hmm, besides that, I’ll do a mix of watching drama and other content on YouTube.
Audio only is still a no no for me.

1st Week

Sooo faaar~ I’ve managed to listen every day to some Japanese. :tada:
Which is awesome, especially because I moved across my country 2 days ago and was busy with preparation before and after. :package: :exploding_head:

I’ve discovered a Spotify radio show, but I won’t link it here just now, I still don’t know if I like it enough to recommend.
But I’ve noticed even if I understand like 0.5% - I can’t hide the grin lol. :ok_woman: It’s cool. I bet you know what I mean.

Besides that, I’ve started to watch some dubbed shows on Netflix with the Language Reactor Extension for my browser, very handy!
(It allows you to watch shows with two different subtitle languages and even more than that, (it recommends videos on YouTube for your current level etc. but I don’t use the other functionalities just yet.))

2nd Week

Mhh, yesterday it happened. :sweat_drops: I lost my streak- …thanks eastern! The day got just too busy, but no time to worry. The first thing I did in the morning today was to listen to some vlogger running around in Tokyo. :raised_hands:

3rd Week

Well… it was a challenging week. :see_no_evil::sweat_drops: Not only did I struggle with this challenge, but also with my regular reviews. I guess I have to establish a new routine, now that the moving part is mostly done. I’ve been more into organizing and exploring lately. But hey, I didn’t completely lose track, which I’m happy about!
So, I got to play around with ChatGPT and added an extension that allows me to listen and talk. It’s fun, but doesn’t work 100% of the time. Still, it’s pretty good. Since I don’t feel confident enough to speak to native speakers yet, this is a nice bridge to practice with.

kind of pop → Kaze Fujii - Shinunoga E-Wa
kind of indie → WurtS - Spellbound
kind of mainstream, but karaoke fun → YOASOBI - セブンティーン

4th Week

Woah, the first month is over! Even though I didn’t check all the day’s - I thought it will be worse. A lot happened this month for me in my personal life, but even though - I managed to keep listening.
Yay! :sparkles:

I noticed, that start to understand more words from the lyrics, even if the part was spoken/sung quite fast. And after every additional listening, I noticed another word.

For the next month:

  • I’ll try to more consistent and increase the length of the sessions.
  • Shadowing the content.

Joining again. Having a nice march and want to keep it up.
Mainly watching dramas/anime with subs but I want to get a bit more into sub-less stuff even if it’s mostly random noise but it’ll probably help in the long run. It just makes it hard to focus, but I’ll try.
