Listened to this YT vid yesterday morning: (7 mins)
I watched without subtitles, and turned them on when I wanted to double check the meaning of a sentence, and felt pretty confident with what I could understand.
Also managed to hear the sentence pattern しか…ない/ません which I’d recently been studying which was nice, though I think it’s going to take a little longer for me able to actually translate the meaning in real time haha.
And the 文豪ストレイドッグス Onsen audio drama last night. (27 mins) I’m using this as my benchmark for my listening skills in general (I must have listened to it about 20+ times now over the past couple of months). I’m not looking at the subtitles when I watch, and everytime I listen I piece together a bit more of the story. One day I’ll check to see how much I’ve got right.
I’m actually flying out to Japan today for a holiday, so I might not be posting for a couple of weeks, but I’ll definitely be getting lots of listening practice
This channel is really interesting! There’s Japanese subtitles too, which is helpful when I can’t catch what she said.
Bad idea to watch it on my way home after work… I was so hungry
Today was a low-stakes day, but still got some stuff in!
Watched/Listened:
about 30 minutes of my karaoke song playlist - I have a bookmark folder of songs I’m learning for karaoke(or just learning the lyrics to), and I listen to the songs and follow along with lyrics (looking up words as they come up), that counts as listening, right? Every time I come back to songs there’s more and more parts that I understand, which is super fun!
16bitセンセーション ANOTHER LAYER episode 1 (w english subs) - I figured this show would have a lot of funny words and didn’t want to try it without subs, but I was actively listening still. MC has some kinda funny speech mannerisms. I could probably keep up with jp subs, but not sure if I want to do the work of finding those for a currently airing series Although, it is about PC bishoujo game company in the 90s, so, be warned that this will probably contain some of the kind of content that implies, if you were thinking about checking it out. (I thought the first episode was very cute, but I also have DOS installed on my PC98 emulator, so I might be exactly the target audience for this particular show )
This is good advice, I will be following this advice shortly
Learn Japanese with Noriko 75 (7 min): She talked about 2 words she mentioned in the previous podcast: いらう, which means to touch (in dialect) and 賛否両論, which is something akin to mixed reviews - it was quite interesting.
できる猫はきょうも有痛 10 (~24 min): I still have 3 more episodes to catch up to; it’s been already a few weeks since I watched episode 9 but I just want to finish the series and not drop it halfway through. I’ve looked at the new anime coming out in October and several caught my attention, but knowing myself, I doubt I’ll be able to follow more than 1 or 2.
Finally, I did a full listening (聴解) practice exam for the JLPT N3 (~40 min?). This time I got 23/28, which is 1 point more than the mock test I did 2 months ago. I’m not that happy about it, but its clear where my weak points are (and those are the final 2 parts of the exam, where you need to choose the right phrase as an answer in a dialogue). So I will try to focus my future studies on these parts, if possible.
Fail?! I’d say that’s half the job description of a Japanese variety tv show comedian. Travel around the country eating food and acting overcome by deliciousness for the camera.
ok so this vtuber let’s-play video gave me more listening time in one go than anything else i’ve listened to recently
I wasn’t sure what to expect since this is titled as “asmr whispering voice” but she actually speaks loudly and quickly the entire way through haha. She’s playing “Unpacking” - one of my favorite puzzle games - but is so baffled by like 50% of all of the things she’s unpacking in these obviously western/probably american houses. The exasperated and entirely confused 「こっこれ何?何これ??」at, like, the wooden x-shaped dish rack and not knowing which room to put it had me crying laughing And the song she couldn’t help but belt out when she realized the “twist” about the people living in the final house (that sounds cryptic but I’m avoiding spoilers)
But, in general, this ended up being really great practice for just hearing a normal person talk to themselves about everyday life items. The full video is like 3hrs and I genuinely think I want to finish watching it haha
Thoughts:
I started Sakura and Suzuki the other day so I thought I’d better give it a listen. It would probably be possible to play this whole series in the background and listen to it without reading I think I’d understand more than the narrative ones. But I’m scared to take off the shadowing/satori training wheels and see how much vocab I actually don’t know.
Comedy duo ハリセンボン went to コッペ田島 for breakfast and brought us along in this video.
I wasn’t expecting the bread to be so big! And for the price, it’s very worth it!
The way they described the bread makes me want to eat one too.
Same as the day before, I watched a food video on my way home so I was hungry haha.
侵略!イカ娘 episode 1 - (english subs) mostly followed without the subs, just used them to check a few words. I also read the first few chapters of this afterwards
It was very good at making me hungry. I don’t think there was anything I couldn’t understand but it was a helpful refresher!
I also watched a vid from Daily Japanese with Naoko all about 覚える
Thing I really appreciate about this channel is the use of pictures along with the Japanese rather than just English translations, it’s really helpful with connecting the Japanese words with things and ideas. I got a little lost when she just talked for awhile but I could keep up with the gist of everything.
Episode 18 of Japanesepod101’s Lower Intermediate series, and one episode of Nihongo con Teppei for Beginners.
October 6th!
Today I had a class with one of my tutors and we spoke about a range of topics including tipping culture and taxes - we also did some exam style listening questions.
In the evening, I watched another episode of Terrace House with my daughter.
Thoughts:
Watching more Kaho on youtube. I love Kaho. I keep looking up mountain climbing related words she uses, so i guess i’m about to skew my vocab towards mountain climbing, lmao.
me: oh, mountain peak, that seems like an easy kanji, I wonder what wk level it is
wk: [is level 45]
ok, i’ll wait
Yesterday I tried to listen to 日本語ききはじめ while I worked out. I remember there being an article on Tofugu that mentioned that exercising as you study could help with retention (can’t remember which article, unfortunately), but the gym can get pretty noisy, and I don’t have noise cancelling headphones, so I ended up missing a lot of what was said. I then watched the video @omk3 linked above about the history of sushi, which was actually very enlightening!
Today I only listened to a quick episode from 日本語の聴解のためのPodcast. Hopefully I’ll do a little more listening this weekend.
FINAL FANTASY XIV Letter from the Producer LIVE Part LXXIX (~30 min)
Watched another episode of できる猫 yesterday, and for a change, I decided to give FFXIV’s live letter from the producer a chance in Japanese (since it popped up in my youtube and I wasn’t even aware it came out yesterday). The whole live is 1:30h, but I’m not sure if I’ll actually watch it all. But it was quite fun watching at least a part of it, and I’ve been enjoying more video-based listening practice rather then only listening to the same podcasts.
Today I watched another episode of Terrace house with my daughter.
I was meant to be attending a language exchange today so that would have been my listening practise, but unfortunately my train was delayed by an hour and then got canceled so I never made it there.
