Learning Tools

こんにちは!!私はDecamoriです。どうぞよろしく。I’m a young amateur japanese learner and I am just about to complete the last free level here. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to pay for premium so I was wondering if i am still allowed to interact with this forum. Also are there any other free resources similar to wanikani you could recommend?

Resources I already use: Cure dolly, busuu, a podcast and wanikani(not for long).
I mainly need help with basically all aspects of learning but especially speaking.

Check out
https://www.irodori-online.jpf.go.jp/

It’s free and it’s a very good course focusing on language use cases, to make it interesting and relevant, from beginner level.

Not only are you allowed to use this forum, but you can actually look up WaniKani items for free:

So, you can still study radicals, kanji and vocab, you just won’t be able to have them as SRS for items above level 3!

Here are some free reading resources (though you would need to learn a bit of grammar before you can use them effectively):

And here is a great listening resource:

Wanikaniコミュニティへようこそ!

Being a beginner in japanese is a very fun experience! Sadly, many stop when realizing the true workload of learning a new language. Especially if its very different from your mother tongue like japanese. Simple solution is to be prepared. Most who start, fail at the point of realization.
I can strongly recommend using tools that keep you motivated. I think thats the best you can do to hop over the first plateau of struggles.

That being said, my recommendation is “Japanese from Zero”. The guy who wrote the book is originally american but lived in Japan for more than 20 years. He created the book series together with his japanese wife. However, I never really used the books. Instead, I was viewing his youtube guide (same name). He goes through every topic in good detail for all the books content and gives great and fun explanations. The book is more for additional examples and exercise.

Btw. Wanikani usually offers a good deal around christmas. Maybe you can get your premium cheaper (;

General tip
There are some fields you want to cover while learning. Your focus highly depends on your preference.

Here are the fields you should cover:

  • Kanji & Vocab (Wanikani)
  • Grammar (Japanese from Zero)
  • Listening & Reading (Anything you are interested in. Books, Music, Youtube channels, …)
  • Speaking (You could use apps like HelloTalk and/or find a Tandem Partner, make friends if possible)
  • Writing (Personally, I think its not too important unless you have fun writing Kanji or already live in Japan. Then it gets useful)

To summorize, keep your interest and motivation level as high as possible. You will reach difficult points and need something to keep going.
And please use this forum at your hearts content. Ask questions and engage with all the fun topics. (I recently opened a thread for simple japanese cooking though)

Have fun!!!
