Hi there! I’m a self-taught Japanese learner and I’ve been studying for a year and a half. I thought it would be fun to join this forum in hopes of finding fellow learners to talk to about the language - my one question is, am I allowed to use the forum if I don’t actively use WaniKani to learn kanji? I’m not sure if using WaniKani for study is like a prerequisite for using this forum, so I just wanted to check. Thank you ^^
No there are a bunch of people here who never used WaniKani at all. Welcome and have fun!
Thank you ![]()
You can use this forum regardless of whether you have a paid subscription or not!
I would recommend subscribing though – I personally find WaniKani a great app which has helped me a lot.
In any case, welcome to this community – I really hope you’d like it here and want to stay! ![]()
Have you already started reading any japanese materials?
Just in case, here are some good and (legally) free materials:
Thank you @trunklayer, I definitely plan on getting to know people here and it’s great to have somewhere to talk about Japanese since I’ve never met other learners before. I have started reading, I started with articles and basic reasing material online and am just recently beginning to read light novels (like physical books) with the help of an online dictionary, which is really exciting!
I’ve never used the app and I’m here all the time. They’ll have to chase me out with pitchforks if they want me gone ![]()
Congratulations! ![]()
Btw, this forum has a lot of book clubs – it’s possible that some of the books you are reading might have clubs here as well:
That’s really helpful @trunklayer, thank you. I’m currently reading my first physical novel in Japanese となりのトトロ which I’ve been able to read quite comfortably (I guess it’s more on the simpler side as far as books go, but I’m proud nonetheless) but I have the 安達としまむら series arriving soon which I’m super excited to start reading!
Thanks again for the warm welcome, hopefully I’ll see you around ![]()
You are welcome, btw, here’s a good resource for tracking your books:
Here’s my page on it
Anyway, best of luck with your studies! ![]()
I seem to have misplaced my pitchfork. Will a broom do?
*checks regulations*
Nope, it looks like a pitchfork is the only thing that will do. Although it does say that torches will improve the pitchfork’s efficacy.
