Hi everyone! I finished first 13 topic of MNN and was wondering that is first 13 topic enough for N5 exam? Everyone saying lots of things about N5, I only want to take the exam just for motivation. Do you recommend Genki book or MNN is enough?
Have you attempted past N5 exams? It would be a good way to determine if you feel ready to take the exam and identify what areas you can improve.
No, I have not
But thats a good idea! Thank you ![]()
It has been a long time since I took the N5, and I have not used MNN - but I would echo the other recommendation, in that a major factor in doing well in the JLPT, any level, is to become intimately familiar with the structure of the different test sections, so that you’re not learning the test for the first time while you’re actually taking it.
Taking timed practice exams is a great way to do that.
I passed N5 after finishing Nakama 1, which is roughly equivalent to Genki 1, but I don’t know how that compares to Minna no Nihongo.
Remember you also need to practice your listening, which may not have come up all that much while studying a textbook.
Hmm, hard to say, tbh! I finished book 1 of MNN and felt comfortably prepared when I took N5. I agree with what others have said about taking some practice tests (a lot of free ones available online!) to get a feel for where you’re at.
Personally MNN was enough for me! I used that, plus YT videos focusing on MNN (and Gamer Gengo’s N5 grammar video) to learn the grammar, and did a bunch of practice tests. If you want to check out the Genki 1 book but don’t want to buy the book, Tokini Andy and GamerGengo on YT both have videos specifically on the Genki 1 textbook.
Good luck on studying for the N5! Passing it was such a huge motivator for me to keep studying!
