I know right? Basically, what I’ve learned is to attach a word not just to a meaning but to a context - who said what to whom and what was the intention? And I try to read the most at a neutral/polite register, it would be disaster if I started using all the words I read in Slam Dunk (high school boys being rude to each other) in real life

I just found out that かもしれない can be used with the ぬ nevative form as well, making it かもしれぬ. This just made me realize that when I initially leanred N5 and N4 grammar, I didn’t actually understand the grammar patters, but just brute forced them into my brain, which kinda worked, I guess. However, the grammar points make so much more sense, now that I have some more knowledge and a better understanding about the basic points like potential form, conditional etc., for example, I didn’t really realize that かもしれない (and also かもしれぬ) contains the negative potential form of 知る for a long time. It would’ve been so easier to learn these things if I had looked out for such patterns. I guess reading the grammar explanations on Bunpro more in-depth would’ve also helped lol
To defend myself, though, I have to add that かもしれない was tought before the potential form lol
Don’t worry… As you are already experiencing, you continue to understand on more levels and more completely as you go along

This experience of going back over something you’ve already learned and finding more nuance will continue for… actually I’m pretty sure it has no end. There’s always more nuance to be learned.
Yes, going back to the lower levels after having gone through all up to N3, the first grammar patterns make so much more sense, and it also made me realise how few actual grammar points there are, as many grammar points are just combinations of more basic ones. It indeed gives me the feeling that I understand the strcutues a lot better now! It’s still quite hard to keep track of the nuances, but it gets at least easier if I’m able to “deconstruct” a structure into its components, and the nuances feel like they’re the hardest challenge in Japanese for me.

When is this mysterious ぬ form used, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it reading? !
It’s just the classical form of ない and only rarely used nowadays; appearently, some set phrases use it.
And I just found yet another must-form lol: ねばならない (JLPT N2) | Bunpro
ok, lol, I think you’re ready to read fun stuff now, you’re way past what you’re likely to come across in your first manga and novels. I’ve never seen either of those, although I’d hazard a correct guess if seen in context. The ぬ reminds me of a ず form that comes up in writing.
lol these are limitless! but at least so predictable they just make sense in context because they all kind of feel the same thank goodness.

ワームが静まり返った洞窟で、例のの建物の扉が開いていました。
(Markus:) この建物の中に、この世界の未来がある…
(Markus:) 行っちゃダメだ。
(Markus:) 僕は本当にこの未来から人間を奪っていいのだろうか？
In the cave where the worm fell completely silent, the doors of the building that was as it always was were open.
(Markus:) The future of this world is inside this building…

Also, the last two sentences really broke my head. Could someone please explain me what this sentence is? I guess it’s some shortening which I’m not thinking of right now lol

it’s a different way of expressing 言ってはいけない
which is a relative of the above mentioned ねばならない (just with the opposite meaning bc the first part is positive instead of negative)

Ooooh, it’s the “must not” form? Looks like I was right then that it’s some shortening I wasn’t aware of lol (ok, I was aware of it, but I forgot it lol)

I checked the original and it’s 行っちゃダメ! That makes a lot more sense than 言っちゃ. I could’ve thought of that myself 
maybe it’s something about the rune stones inside? That’s the building that they weren’t allowed to enter, isn’t it?

I didn’t think it would be so confusing !
Markus thinks there is something special that can change the future in this building but he is not allowed to enter it (the door is open thought so he could deliberately enter it). He is then wondering whether he shall enter the building and make the future world better or respect the underground people and deprive the people who would benefit from what’s inside the building from a better future. Does that make sense ?
(on the positive side, it’s the first time you’re confused by the story
