Yeah I think if it’s not in your region it might just not show up on Justwatch at all, sadly.
While we’re going deeper end on the art film stuff, wanted to recommend Takashi Ito. He made a lot of cool experimental shorts. This kind of stuff usually has no words, so it’s not listening practice, but I think it’s neat:
It’s on youtube after all! Posting the link here so I don’t forget.
I’ve only watched the first ten minutes so far, but it does look awesome. However, I’m not sure it should count as Japanese - the language they’re all speaking is gibberish, and the subtitles in this version are in English…
Edit: Well I watched it all and it really was amazing. Thanks @liveunderwater for letting us know about it! What’s even more inspiring is that the creator, Takahide Hori, made the whole film virtually by himself, and according to Wikipedia, he is entirely self-taught.
Is a very poor representation of stop-motion animation (unfortunately). Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, Isle of Dogs ← AAA stop-motion for comparison if you’re unfamiliar.
Apparently this is the case? Too bad, not sure how I’ll approach checking regional availability in the future.
Ok, let’s strike it as a nomination then. I saw Japanese language in the audio description (somewhere, probably imdb) but obviously couldn’t quantify the content base on that. Being artsy is one thing but failing to have the target language is, well, woops my bad.
Oh yeah, warning for everyone watching in Japanese: this movie is VERY talky- to the point that it was at times difficult to follow with English subs due to how quickly you had to read and how much information was on the screen. (There are also popups on the screen for character names, titles, locations, etc)
Well this poll is several days late, been unwell and fairly depressed and not doing much of anything. So voting will just go a couple days this time. 3 votes still I suppose.
So, small number of votes, but I always told myself if 2 movies tied I’d run them in a row, that’s what I plan to do here. The following pick will be Tremble All You Want.
Same rate, just, we already know what the pick will be in 2 weeks. When I have the time/energy I was thinking of nominating as well now that the list is getting smaller.
Well for me, Ikiru, Nobody Knows, Suicide Club, Fireworks, and Kikujiro are all great. Would personally love to rewatch a Takeshi Kitano (so one of the last two). I’ve also seen Dark Water and still liked it, but I’d put it a bit lower compared to all those.
Some of my letterboxd friends have me unsure about Departures, but I’d be willing to try it if people wanted. I’d rather like to see Drive My Car… but it’s also 3 hours long…
