Availability

Not so lucky with online uploads this time. I’ve only checked for the US, but found it rentable ($3) on Youtube, Amazon, etc. No streaming servives without individually renting it. Best to check your region on justwatch.

I had watched the trailer and thought that it was terrific.

Have not seen the actual movie.

Shin Godzilla is best Godzilla.

Prove me wrong…

Do I need to watch the previous Godzilla movies to understand?

Nope, most Godzilla movies can be watched without context.

(Shall we nominate 1954 Godzilla next?)

I’d argue this is true for most monster movies :joy:

The real context you need for Godzilla is historical.

Justwatch doesn’t even list the movie for me :frowning:
Apparently there’s no way to watch it from here, renting or otherwise. :sob:

Did you search in Japanese? I did and it didn’t show up, but it shows up as Shin Godzilla.

@Daisoujou for me it shows up “free” on Prime and HBO Max.

Granted, I am not in the US, but I’d be surprised.

What should I watch first, then?

Well, get ready to be surprised: not in the US on Prime at least, I verified, haha.

I’m no expert, but Shaun’s video is pretty good

I searched with both names and got several other godzillas, but not this one. Then I googled the movie name+justwatch and got the US version, but when I went to change country, my country wasn’t even in the drop-down menu. :person_shrugging:

I happen to have a copy and am willing to do a watch party on Discord

(does that mean a more convenient time slot too?)

I’m usually up pretty early. I have to be at work (online) at 3pm London time* and usually wake up around 1pm LT. Since I work remotely I could even leave it streaming while I’m at work :joy:
On the weekends I’d have more flexibility, especially Sundays, and I don’t usually sleep in all that late.

*I think you said you used to live in the UK but no longer do, but figure if you’re in Europe it’s easier to find the time difference from London than from mine

This all sounds good, I’m sure we can find a suitable time slot. And thanks for the London times, I always end up super confused with time zones too far away from mine

Well, this was a film. I witnessed the images with my eyes. I believe sometimes the characters were speaking “Japanese.” What have I been doing all this time?

Non-spoiler review:

Technically watched with English subs, though the translation quality was a bit dodgy, haha, so I had to rely on my Japanese comprehension more than expected, with some mixed results there.

Thankfully, I don’t think knowing all of the details really makes or breaks a film like this, and I was able to follow along with the majority of the plot without too much trouble.

That said, I don’t think this is a great movie for listening practice unless you’re very advanced. There was a lot of specialized language, and most of it was spoken very, very fast. It’s very unforgiving to beginners. (I did hear some of the more uncommon WaniKani words, though, haha).

This was my first time watching a Godzilla movie (the only other true kaiju film I’ve seen is Mothra). I liked it alright, though I didn’t love it.

Spoiler review:

I liked the music in the film, and some of the shots were pretty neat! The CGI was… a bit of a mixed bag. The baby Godzilla form was honestly scarier than the final form, haha. I think the part that will stick with me the most is the closing shot on Godzilla’s tail, with those humanoid figures seeming to be in the process of emerging out of it…

There’s a lot of nationalism in the film, and it’s also blatantly pretty critical of bureaucracy. I don’t really have enough cultural context to speak a whole lot on those points, but it’d be interesting to read about, I think. I did pick up on some of the subtext with the nuclear weapons and the radiation.

Interestingly, I noticed when looking up the film on wikipedia that Japanese critics gave it higher reviews than western critics.

That moment when you realize that the huge mountain you were climbing all this time was just a little hill that happened to block your view to the massive mountain behind it :flushed:
(don’t worry, it’s actually a good sign, I think, although it feels so bad )

What we thought was a huge mountain was just Godzilla’s baby form! :scream:

It’s a fine, if very slow, nationalistic, and needlessly verbose “feel-good”(?) movie.

Like a 2000s American disaster movie a la Armageddon, The Core, etc.

An interesting watch, rather than a fun watch.
