I had a look Marumori site several weeks ago (looking for alternative because of the new layout changes at WK) and it looks like that WK is trying to copy Morumori’s style and layout (conspiracy theory).
Marumori search results comes up as tiles but their tiles are far more readable compared to WK and have more options. Marumori also uses romaji and vocab list is far more comprehensive.
Check this out:
The only difference WK has done their search results and tile layout badly (IMO).
WK needs to get those subscription dollars to compete!
In my reviews today I mistook 慨 for 概 so I clicked on 慨 to see its kanji page. On the Kanji page 慨 is so small I couldn’t tell what the difference was. I had to look at the radical combinations on the 慨 and 概 page to be able to tell what the difference was. They really should put kanji really big on the right side or something
Just stumbled upon this thread, and can mostly agree. Tinkered around with a little bit of CSS to see if this could easily be modified via userscript (not sure if anyone has done this so far). Here’s a quick before/after - what do you guys think?
I didn’t try to replicate the original design exactly - just tried to find the most minimal changes to achieve most of the utility that seemed to have been lost (based on posts in this thread).
Just going to post here and agree that the kanji characters are so much harder to read and distinguish when looking at them now compared to how it used to be. I have made many mistakes or confused certain kanji when glancing at them because I can’t make them out as intricately as I used to be able to. Used to be no problem, now it’s much more difficult. Gonna hope a remedy for it eventually surfaces soon.
I can’t imagine a world where anyone who is paying for a Kanji service would purposefully like….to see the Kanji look smaller. That just does not make any sense. And I am someone who more or less likes the new dashboard overall, but readability is obviously extremely important…make them bigger please. For now I am going to use this tweak.
I (and other users) feel your pain regarding the smaller kanji.
It’s almost two months since they blindsided users with this change but WK fail to see how detrimental the smaller kanji (and the UI change) is to learning.
Their focus seems to be the Dashboard and widgets unfortunately.
From my brief inspection they have something called --font-size-xxlarge: 38px; they could apply that to css class subject-character__characters-text and it ought to make it much much better. On a second note, how do people even distinguish between tiny kanji? Even the LCD type kanji just devolve into a mess.
And yet, in general use (books for example) Japanese typically uses a smaller font size (8 to 10 point) than typical English books (10 to 12 point). I note the same in most of what I get in the mail here, or reading labels on products. Or the (Japanese) book my wife is reading now as I write this.
Perhaps less giant fonts in my study materials will better prepare me for the real world;)
Small fonts are fine for Japanese adults because they’ve had a decade of practice with big fonts. Children’s books and penmanship practice books don’t skimp on the font size and I am baby. I need bigger like size 60 so I can become intimately familiar with each stroke.
