i love pastel colours and i find dark modes actually hurt
also i’m almost 40, but i suppose that’s still relatively young xD
but no, definitely not colour blind
Thanks for sharing this. I prefer the way you’e formatted the vocab list to how Wanikani currently formats it (though I think I still like the old UI’s version of this the best). I’m curious what your “dictionary” pages for kanji and radicals look like.
i’m not sure what you mean by “dictionary page” ![]()
this?
it’s not really any different than default, just prettier
How are you able to handle white on yellow? The scientists should study your eyes for their superior fitness. ![]()
I have to say it again:
After three weeks, the kanji tiles are too small to read.![]()
The reviews, kanji, radical, vocab pages, levels - font sizing, colour, etc. ![]()
And I’m posting this from a 15” laptop screen. Much worse on a mobile device.
They need to bring back the old version / UI - no frills, no bells and no whistles - have an option to revert to the old version.
EDIT: Does someone have a screenshot of any vocab word in the old format? Thanks
Seriously the kanji need to be 3x bigger on the info pages. ![]()
Thanks so much for sharing this, straille. Whatever you did is certainly an improvement over the new UI, at least as far as white space is concerned (though for what it’s worth, I still much prefer the old UI for kanji/vocab/radical lookup).
Would you mind sharing how exactly you modified the layout? Is there a way to make the kanji/vocab/radicals bigger within the boxes using your method? Thanks so much!
my code is a huge mess, but i think you might be interested in this userstyle
Well, I didn’t use the levels view but only particular kanji view (what @chkremer showed)…
This style, while not fixing all my issues with the UI, has been enough of an improvement that I’ve decided to stay here, for a little while anyway. Thank you so much for pointing it out, and bless the person who developed it! (I also find your page unreadable - but pretty! - and I’m glad that you love it. I envy your eyesight)
I will say that I am liking elements of the dashboard now that I’ve removed most of the track-your-progress game type elements. I especially like the little review quiz on the missed kanji that you can do directly from the dash.
I dont lke the smaller font. Tiny details that are hugely relevant to a kanji can get difficult to spot.
As extensive as this thread has been, I will be sending feedback about the UI changes to https://www.wanikani.com/contact because the new UI is clearly not working (for me).
I encourage you to do the same. Please.
I’ve done so, but they’re not really more responsive. However, I do think the more of us who do the better. Some people to whom I’ve spoken are just silently walking away….
Agreed. The vast majority of my problems with this reup are related to the tiny size of the kanji (and the associated white space)
Agreed. The more that speak up, the better.
By doing so:
- It’s been officially logged - not just ramblings on a forum board
- It requires a response once it’s been logged
- It provides data / stats
From my experience, management always say, “Where’s your data / evidence for your claim?”
My reply, “Here you go” after handing them reports with charts and data to back my claim.
If WK respond, then great. If not, well….I think we can draw our own conclusions.
This thread is proof that the New UI is badly designed.
Like I’ve said before, WK’s focus seems to be on the “New Dashboard” right now rather than fixing the UI - see how many times koichi and TofuguKyle have responded in this thread compared to the New Dashboard thread? (they have probably muted this thread from their feed)
I use the analogy when buying a new car: The exterior of the car is one factor I consider, but I really need to know what’s under the hood (engine) and how reliable it will be.
Right now, the WK dashboard is nice and shiny, but WK is not really focused on fixing the engine (the learning UI with the small kanji tiles, page formats, list results for searches, ).
The lack of responses by WK staff in this thread is evident that fixing the UI is not a priority.
Who are these people who actually like looking at smaller kanji?
"We’ll look again when things have calmed down” - translation: Don’t hold your breath.
I’m visually impaired, and the new smaller kanji size gives me eyestrain. There are ways to make them bigger by temporarily increasing the page zoom or using magnifier tools, of course, but they all require extra scrolls and clicks, and having to do things like that over and over is incredibly demotivating. My progress on WaniKani has dropped to a trickle at this point, and I’m really hoping they increase the kanji size sometime soon so I can get things going again. In the meantime, I’m exploring other kanji learning options.
not an official change but have you checked out this userstyle ?
thanks to @straille mentioned it in this thread, i have been using it for a while and it helps a lot
