[iOS] Tsurukame - native app with offline lessons and reviews

Just wanted to say that this is such a great app. I find Tsurukame lesson layout a little more efficient than WaniKani, and the option to ignore typos saves a lot of annoyance, especially on mobile.

Hope you’ll also support KaniWani some day

It sounds really good, sadly I don’t have access to the alt store. Is there a way to try it through test flight?

AltStore can be obtained via https://altstore.io/

If your device is jailbroken, you can use the iOS repository: Koraigame Repo

Sadly, Koraigame will never be available in the App Store, except the pieces that are merged into the main Tsurukame, and I don’t intend on spending the $99 a year for a paid developer account so that I can distribute via TestFlight…

Thanks, didn’t realise you could get the alt store on Windows I’ll give it a try when I have a chance

I’ve created a separate thread for Koraigame, to avoid derailing this thread:

Just came here to say thank you and share how much I love this app. Been using it for a couple levels now and I’m no longer frustrated by typos. It’s been working great overall and the customization options rock. So THANK YOU!!

How do we activate Anki mode (in Tsurukame)? Thanks!

Funny enough, it was actually reviewed for merging into main Tsurukame just 55 minutes after you posted this.

It should be added to the TestFlight beta in approximately 12 hours.

I don’t think this was mentioned, but when one has enabled “Autoplay audio”, the audio will play while showing the next review item. Which is terrible for building links between the word and the sound.

Can I get the audio clip playing delay switching to the next item, pretty please?

Actually, it has been mentioned, but it was a while ago:

Ah I only checked this thread, my bad. So that’s my +1 for that issue then

Anki mode has been merged and is available now in TestFlight, starting with build 832.

@UInt2048 @davidsansome

I really appreciate all the work you guys put into the app.

I tested out the new Anki-style mode. I hope you don’t mind some opinionated feedback on some things that seem like they would be nice to have. Feel free to ignore it if you want.

  • Bigger buttons: One of the main reasons I use Anki-style mode is when I’m traveling and am not able to focus on precisely typing in answers. In that kind of scenario, it’s also hard to focus on precisely pressing buttons. It would be nice if the layout were something like:

    • Top 1/3 of screen: the word/kanji/radical being quizzed
    • Middle 1/3 of screen: this entire region is filled by a button that when pressed shows the correct answer; the correct answer replaces the button when the button is pressed; only the current question type has its answer shown to avoid spoilers
    • Bottom 1/3 of screen: the entire region is filled by mark right/wrong buttons
    • The advantage of this layout is it allows answering Anki-style reviews with only two easy button presses (or one if you don’t need to check the answer) instead of 2-3 precise button presses in the current version.
    • Alternatively, instead of the layout above, you could instead make it so that tapping almost anywhere shows the correct answer and after the correct answer is shown, tapping almost anywhere on the left side of the screen marks it wrong and right side of the screen marks it right. I would actually prefer this personally over the above.
  • Remove or allow disabling the animations. For me at least, this slows me down and disrupts the “flow” of doing reviews. I’m mainly talking about the animations of the item detail window and the mark correct menu during Anki-style reviews. The other animations are less of an issue.

  • Option to do both reading and meaning as a single review in Anki-style mode where the user selects right/wrong according to whether they got both reading and meaning correct instead of individual reviews for each meaning and reading separately.

Edit: Also, I think I found a bug. The show item information button during Anki-style mode in the bottom left of the screen doesn’t appear for me unless I click the submit answer button, then click cancel.

I was eagerly awaiting Anki mode, but for me it doesn’t do anything?!

I activated it in the settings, and in my review screen I can see an area at the bottom with greyed out (!) text “答えを見せる” but I can’t do anything…

Seconded! This is how I set up Anki, fwiw

Also, another remark: The settings explanation says “Allows doing reviews without typing answers” → I was expecting to be able to type in an answer or to just confirm it Anki-style. As this doesn’t seem to be the case, maybe rewording it would make things clearer? E.g. “Do reviews without typing answers” or something.

Do you see a blue arrow to the right of where it says that? If you tap the blue arrow, you get the option to mark it right/wrong.

Ooooh, that explains it probably! I have „Allow skipping reviews“ activated and my screen looks like this:

When I click the circle, (unsurprisingly) the current item gets skipped…

This sounds like a much more important reason to change the interaction in Anki mode, tbh…

Thanks for adding Anki mode it’s really helpful!

If you were looking for more feedback I think it’d be even better if Anki mode gave you a tick or cross to choose on each review, with the cross taking you straight to the meaning/reading and the tick marking as complete.

I don’t mind. It doesn’t necessarily mean I will implement it, but I do read it and try to respond.

That’s a good idea. There would need to be some indicator that this is happening though, so users would know that tapping there would mark the answer right/wrong.

You can use the existing back-to-back options if you want. I know your option would reduce button presses, but just letting you know in case it helps!

That was more like my initial plan, but this way turned out to be easier to implement, and (naturally) Anki mode was a very popular feature request which needed to be added in some form ASAP!

Yeah understandable! Thanks for implementing it it’s made my life a lot easier haha
