I keep confusing the meanings and readings for the two. Does anyone know a good mnemonic or anything to distinguish them?
How about:
the 敗 in 勝敗 has the “kai” radical on the “hidari” side, so it becomes “hai”
the 負 in 勝負 has it on the “bottom”, so it becomes, uh… “bu”
As for meaning, people demanding a showdown from someone else is fairly common in martial arts anime - in such a situation, they’d write a letter of 勝負 and leave it in their shoe locker at school or something.
