How to write Kanji 1 (ー)

Yooooo, Levelthree geeking my way up and stumbled upon a difficulty. How can I with my romanji keyboard type in the Kanji one. I recently learned “under the bed” and was unable to find the solution, until I just copypasted the ー from somewhere else.
Any help

I believe just the Romaji dash “-” will get converted to the long Japanese one in reading fields.

Assuming you have an IME, you’d type “ichi” which would display as 「いち」 and then press the space bar until you find 「一」. However, this is not a long vowel sound ー though they do look similar. So if you attempt to use the kanji 一 in that situation I suspect it will be incorrect. The long vowel sound is achieved by using a dash / minus sign “-”

Why do I suspect it would be incorrect? Because of 二 and ニ. When you type 「に」 and then press space, there are two identical to the human eye looking characters. But, one is kanji and the other is katakana and if you use the wrong one you’ll confuse online dictionaries or such as to computers they are different symbols.

All this was a long winded way to say, what they said.

I confess I’m mildly confused as to what “under the bed” has to do with 一…

But yes, in general, to type a vocabulary word with the romaji-entry method IME, type the word as normal, then repeatedly hit space until the correct kanji show up - the less-common the kanji, the more often you’ll probably need to push space. You can then hit the enter key to commit, or just start typing the next thing. For example, to type 今日は木曜日です, I’d type “kyouha [space] mokuyoubi [space] desu [enter]” (though since it’s a short enough sentence with common enough vocab, I probably could have typed the whole thing before hitting space.

Just “ichi” will do. :stuck_out_tongue:

 Autocorrect has learnt from how much I type about verbs

Ah, I saw “on the table”/テーブルの上(both mixed kana level 3 vocab) , which is why I thought they were asking about the katakana specifically. I need to read lol

*Grumble grumble*
“This is a hyphen: -, this is a dash: – (en-dash), and this is also a dash: — (em-dash)”.

Anyway…
The hyphen will convert to the long-vowel mark ー (長音符) with an IME.
いち will convert to 一 with an IME.
