How does the kanji progression bar work?

Hi! Level 5 beginner here

I thought the standard for “passing” a kanji is by leveling it up to the guru stage, but why does my dashboard show 38/40 kanji when I haven’t guru’ed 6 of them?

So how does the progression bar count “passing” a kanji?

You don’t need 100% of all kanji to level up, just 90% on each level. So the count here is for the number of kanji left until level up.
