Hanazono's Study Log

I’ve really enjoyed creeping on reading other study logs, so I figured I’d throw another on the pile!

Learning Background

My dad went to high school on a military base in Japan, but never learned to speak any Japanese. But when I was growing up, he had all kinds of fun stories that he loved to tell. I watched Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura English dubs growing up, and one or two other anime, but I’m generally overwhelmed by the hyper nature of many anime (Chill recommendations always welcome!). I do enjoy reading manga and watching dramas.

I had the opportunity to take a few years of Japanese classes in high school, and I loved it! But Japanese wasn’t available at my college, then grad school and life got in the way. But when I got a taste of some fun money (almost 15 years later), I jumped back in to learning Japanese!

2019
o January – re-started in-person classes once a week for fun.
o October – Started WK.

2020
o March – started organizing study group w/ assignments for classmates after classes were cancelled.
o April – Fell off the WK wagon due to pandemic depression. (Study group continued)
o June – Dragged myself back on the wagon!
o July – started iTalki free-chat sessions.
o August – Study group imploded. Took a two-week study break. Japanese classes resumed online.
o September – Study group modified and re-formed.
o October – Added one on one grammar lessons.

The OneNote trackers I’ve seen on other study logs is what I needed in my life  I’ll add colors or something later, but I love a good functional checkbox!

I made it through the week and got everything done that involved other people (yay accountability!), but it was a rough week for motivation winning out over depressive thoughts. I managed to do reviews every day, but new lessons just didn’t happen for most of the week.

Read through some more of Kiki, but overall comprehension felt lower than usual, so I didn’t try and push too hard. I mostly read to follow the general outline, then read the same chapter in English after the fact to double check. Low-stress exposure seems to be the best for my brain in these supplementary items.

Setup for this week looks good and motivation is mostly returned - 頑張りましょう ya’ll!

Oh, I’m also into chill anime! Let me know what you find  Theres a lot of stuff I used to watch as a kid that I dont know I could handle watching now - sailormoon, cardcaptors, superpig (lol). I’ve been watching Shirokuma Cafe recently and loving it. I also watched the first episode of Flying Witch and it also seemed pretty good.

Nice study log! I will start one too

Anime!

Yeah, I’m not sure I’d love the sailor moon anime as much if I didn’t grow up with it. The manga, though, I enjoy a lot more! My favorite thing that I’ve watched this year is probably Cells at Work/はたらくさいぼ! While a bit over the top, it’s mockingly self-aware and thoroughly enjoyable. I’ll have to check out Flying Witch!

The checkbox tables are easier to update through the week and seem less duplicative than images of the OneNote tables, so I’ll see how I feel about this in the long run.

I hit level 27! I haven’t dropped studying in the 3 weeks since I last updated, but I’ve taken some days to be kind to myself because the world feels like it’s on fire. The first week, I went camping and BLEW THROUGH so much reading material by the campfire - it was awesome. I want more of that feeling instead of losing the delineation between home and work because it’s all the same space now.

I’ve been wasting so much time on social media, I deleted my facebook app and am trying to convince myself to redirect to HelloTalk. That hasn’t been super successful… yet!

I had ignored Kitsun for a few weeks, and my review count was pretty high - got that back under control over the last week! Bunpro also had like, 150 reviews, that I was chipping away at slowly. I got it down to 50 or so at one point, and then I was just brain fried. Sooo it’s back at 110 - but that’s still lower than it was! I didn’t read any Kiki, though. It would have been a better choice than feeling election anxiety, but it is what it is. I know I wasn’t the only one, as both of my study groups last week needed a break - so we watched a show together instead (Wooo Netflix Party Teleparty!).

I did spend less time on social media, and more time on Tandem - I found this working better with my brain than HelloTalk. And I’ve been messaging with two real humans instead of just internet trolls or people looking to date! So I’m calling that a huge success.

New kanji feel like they’re just passing straight through without sticking at all… so I’m limiting lessons to just vocab for a few days at least to let my brain catch up. Feeling better overall since I spent the whole weekend outside walking/skating with friends. As it gets to be closer to winter and we have less daylight, I may need to cut back on the commitments I’ve made so I don’t burn out. I’m solar powered.

In SUPER FUN news: I applied, got accepted, and work approved leave to attend a month long session at Akita Inaka School in Oct 2021! I have to hold out hope that it’s a reasonable timeframe to plan travel, and definitely gives me something solid to look forward to. I think most people who attend are at a little bit lower grammar level than I am/plan to be by then, but immersion experiences are what YOU make out of them, too. And I’m determined to make the most out of it!

I had Wednesday off work last week, and I got SO MANY things done - just none of them were Japanese. Since February I’ve been on the moody rollercoaster (for real, who hasn’t been?) - not in a hugely dark place, but the anxiety has definitely been winning in stages. But I woke up on Friday last week feeling actively chipper for the first time since news was breaking about the pandemic. I didn’t read any Kiki like I hoped, but I did read some Yotsuba. I’ll take it!

Overall, it being dark by 5pm is killing my motivation - but I know I’m not alone in this, as my study group friends are all feeling the same. We watched some subbed shows together instead, and we’re planning on shifting to reading some 5-minute twist ending stories during our regular time. The out-loud reading and translations we’ve been doing of the assignments from Kanzen Master have really helped our reading speed and understanding, so this should be a no-prep way to keep pushing that forward together, at least.

I know I’m planning on Thanksgiving week laziness to feel better, but I think a re-vamp of the “standard schedule” is coming soon.
