Im part of a en/jp language exchange discord server (you can only speak the language youre bad at) and im trying to find us stuff to do for practice thats fun. So im looking for games that are simple enough that anyone can pick up quickly that can utilize voicechat. Text chat is ok too, or a hybrid, and voice chat doesnt have to be a main feature of the game. Oh, and it cant require a PC, but it can require a discord bot.
Among Us is the only one i know of (and even that one’s kinda complicated). I might try Catan since it has a mobile app now.
Some kind of online Pictionary might be fun. Even if it’s a hodgepodge of random word generator + online drawing space + voice chat.
Jigsaw Explorer is an easy-to-setup, no account needed, online multiplayer virtual puzzle site. For casual chats while doing a puzzle together. Create a room and invite people to it via link. Will still need a space like Discord for chatting, but everyone will be able to put the jigsaw puzzle together.
Side note: if it’s the Discord server linked from r/LearnJapanese wiki, I’m in there and would love to join if the invite’s open.
It’s a different server. I can send you an invite, but warning, it only has two people (including me) so far. xD I might get a bunch more after i reformulate + repost my ad in CL since it was taken down prematurely.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a puzzle game all about verbal communication and teamwork. One player tries to diffuse a bomb while the other player, who can see nothing except a PDF, asks them questions about what they see and gives instructions based on their answers. Here’s a clip of what that actually looks like, with a Japanese learner and English learner playing together.
In this case they’d decided to use the bomb expert’s native language (the diffuser’s target language) for each round. That’s probably a good idea if you try it, because the game wasn’t specifically designed with a language barrier in mind and the instructions in the manual are intentionally obtuse.
Yeah good point, a lot of these games require communication with others, so language practice could be perfect for this. Great candidates for this might be codenames, or wavelength.
