I’d like to join too, I’ve finally got to level 10 so I can start Genki with a little bit of knowledge!
I did Genki 1 a long time ago but stopped studying Japanese for nearly 3 years, would it be problem if I attended, if just to refresh myself on the material?
I think 3 years is enough to start Genki I from scratch.
if you make it to level 10 by the 11th July id be very impressed. best of luck mate you can do it
why would it be a problem? it literally doesn’t effect anyone.
Everyone here would encourage anyone learning.
Convieniently my copy of Genki and the workbook both arrived this morning so count me in. Looking forward to studying with you all.
I’m in! Glad to study with all of you!
Count me in! I have the Genki books on my desk already and would love to get help setting a pace.
Hi! Welcome!
This is such a brilliant idea! I’ve been eyeing up the Genki series for a while now as it seems to be recommended by just about everyone.
I’ve got a book called ‘Japanese for dummies’ but to be honest i’ve lacked the motivation to really study it, i’m not overly keen on the structure either. This is the perfect opportunity to dive into grammar with some fellow WaniKani users
I live in the UK, any recommendations for where to buy it from and is it worth getting both the text book and work book?
I’ll ask here.
Is there very good alternatives to Genki?
While Genki seems very popular, it gets things confusing.
For instance, the “ee” when romaji would prefer “ei” can be misleading and lead people the ‘wrong’ way especially on websites that use the “ei” system, like Wanikani, BunPro, etc., which would be most of them. (And don’t get me started when words like tooka come in to play and people will get confused and maybe write touka)
Also their explanation of the particle wa was very vague and confusing, I’d even say ‘incorrect’ (they do not get to the point correctly), whereas anywhere else is fine.
I didn’t go any further.
Their audio files are top notch, but I think Genki is not the best?
Genki abandons romaji pretty quickly, so I don’t really think of that as an actual impediment. A class I took used Japanese For Busy People, which seemed to be on par with Genki. Genki is very accessible though.
I also got a lot more out of Genki by combining it with a forum members’s Anki deck to memorize the vocabulary. I think it was by @hinekidori. I had to fix a couple bugs, but it’s awesome.)
I’m up to chapter 11, so I’m almost done the book, but I can help out! The workbook is actually useful, too.
I hope it does abandon romaji and the “ee” (but actually fits better as “ei”) thing quickly. I also had an issue with the “No” particle explanation.
Bunpro and Human Japanese explain it flawlessly. It’s pretty easy. But Genki tries some convoluted, overcomplicated explanation for such an easy particle.
I might go back to it if it gets better.
romaji is gone by chapter 3.
Thanks! Helps motivate me to use Genki again.
Oh thank goodness. I saw this thread and said “Awesome, a reason to start this book again!” and seeing the romaji leave is a great sight. Although some of my reading (Mostly Tae Kim’s Guide) are mostly in Kanji, and I’m not that far in kanji as per my level… I still get through it pretty well, and have even added to my vocabulary because of it, with things such as 好き,忙しい,おいしい. That being said, I have Genki 1 and it’s workbook sitting on my coffee table, almost mockingly. Thank you for this thread @Jiggly_Jellyfish, I’m looking forward to participating as I work towards my goals to get to level 60 by 2020.
I’ve heard good things about Japanese From Zero.

There is a video series on YouTube you can use with the book too. The channel name is Learn Japanese From Zero.
I don’t know anything about it first hand but I am considering buying book 2 of the series after I finish with Genki 1, depending on how things go.
me too. this sounds like an amazing opportunity to do those books.
