The 蘭 in 君子蘭 means orchid, which I learned when I had a student named らんちゃん

You are correct! What a nit-wit! I was working a little too quickly when I was finding words. I thought that it was very odd that Japanese would have a single-kanji word for Hosta. Usually, I do what you do, and do am image search, or search for it on Amazon.jp to see what comes up.

Another method I use is go to the English or Dutch Wikipedia page, and see if it has a Japanese equivalent.

Yeah another colleague of mine (who got a 挿し木 from me) said so, too, and she’s expecting it to flower. Mine didn’t flower last year and so far hasn’t this year either

向日葵が欲しい。

There was a big sunflower along the walking route I did with my dad, and everytime we walked by it, a 黄金鶸 would fly out.

It seems kind of rare to see the kanji for ひまわり. I only ever see it written in kana.

That’s interesting that it has two different sets of kanji - I’ve only known it as 日回り(which better suits the reading).

It seems to me, as someone who really knows nothing about this kind of thing, that the word ひまわり predates both and 日回り matches the reading and 向日葵 moreso represents the flower and it was just decided it would be pronounced ひまわり (which I think is how 山葵 is わさび …). Is that what happened?
Anyway, I’ve only known it as ひまわり or ヒマワリ until now! It seems plants and insects are often written in katakana.

I just scrolled by a picture of a 君子蘭 and I knew what it was because of @Rowena
蝶は百日草が大好きです❣ If you want butterflies, then plant 百日草 ^o^

Another good one for butterflies is ヘリオトロープ but they also really attract bees. My college campus had butterfly gardens so they had heliotrope and they also had bees everywhere.

飛蝗・ばった grasshopper…but idk if I even used the right word for that critter. There are more words for grasshopper and idk much about grasshoppers. I don’t think they particularly love zinnias and idk if most people really want grasshoppers in their yards but I think the picture is cute. Just like I only posted the kitten picture because of the kitten. DX

I think you just need to ask @JenK or @RachelG - by the way, Jen and Rachel; is one or the other of you the more appropriate person to tag for these sorts of requests? I always feel bad bothering two people, and worry that it’s not really supposed to be e.g. Jen’s job or Rachel’s job to deal with this kind of thing 
Also I think we should categorise the words 
for example based on whether they’re plant names, animal names, gardening terms, tools…

So I started collecting words and organizing up top. I started with garden tools. Where ever I can find kanji I list them. I prefer the most common words.
