"Flesh&Blood" Vol. 14 - Pirate Series Reading Club 🏴‍☠️ ⛵

My exact reaction as well. This chapter and the next few are just crazy; I have to say, I’m pretty happy that Nigel took such a drastic step; it may not be the smartest move from the characters’ perspective, but it’s certainly exciting for the reader, haha.

100%. It’s been overdue pretty much since Nigel’s awkward flirting on the ship as they were coming from Spain imo. I feel a little bad that he had this whole arrangement of “well we’ll both compete for Kaito’s heart” and the poor guy had exactly 0 chance. :skull_and_crossbones:

Famous last words. But I have been picking away at it while I was away and now that I’m back I finally managed to finish the volume last night. Like always so much stuff happened so this might get kind of long.

Chapter 5 and 6

Geoffrey reacted to that way better than I thought. I guess it goes to show how much trust he has in Kaito and Nigel.

As a whole this situation wrapped up way smoother than I expected, I thought this was going to turn into some serious drama but it all seems to have ended with very little consequence. It kind of made me question the point of these chapters but (spoiler for the rest of this volume) I feel like maybe this was a way to let Kaito and Nigel have a moment together before Nigel is out of the story for a while.

Chapter 8

A lot of this chapter took me a while to wrap my head around and I’m still not sure I understand the whole tunnel stuff. I had to reread and go back and take notes.
My understanding was something like the tunnel connects very specifically the Hoe of Kaito and Lily’s world and the Hoe in this world in the16th century and goes both ways. When the tunnel opens on a date in one world it’s also possible to enter from the other world’s side. The calendar it’s based on isn’t only the old fairy calendar but all of the calendar that the world has knowledge of and at some point someone who knows the Gregorian calendar could have time slipped there before them, causing this world to adjust to that calendar as well? :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Specific date notes

Current theory is Kaito time slipped when the tunnel opened on the Julian calendar’s summer solstice of the 21st century world while Lily time slipped when the tunnel opened on the 16th century side during the Gregorian calendar’s date for Beltaine.

I’m getting the feeling I’d have trouble understanding this even if it was written in English. The main point seems to be that travel between both sides is possible and that the tunnel actually opens quite frequently. Correct me if any of this seems wrong, I love time travel stuff but it always hurts my head to think about the logistics. Or technically I guess this is more of an isekai situation?

If what they theorize is true, it means they actually can predict the next time the door will open and it’s possible to travel back and forth through the tunnel, making the plan to send Kaito back to the modern world for treatment actually feasible. To make that happen though they’re going to have to tell the truth about everything to Geoffrey. I’ve been waiting for this moment so long :open_mouth:

Chapter 9 and 10

And omg it’s finally time! Lily and Kaito explain the truth to Geoffrey, using the stuff Kaito had in his wallet as proof. It takes him a bit but he eventually believes them and agrees to their plan. Overall it’s quite a melancholy situation though as it becomes clear that Geoffrey expects that he won’t be around anymore by the time Kaito is able to return. :anguished:

That ending on the Hoe makes it seems like Geoffrey’s worries were well founded. Man Matsuoka sensei really likes her dramatic goodbye scenes, that last picture of Geoffrey :sob:

I’m really looking forward to seeing where this next arc is going to go, but it’s kind of sad that everyone’s split up again so soon.

I was wondering that too, usually you wouldn’t expect people on the run to make those movements so they must have had some sort of information but from where

I thought the same but then I realized it would turn out the same as Geoffrey thought it would if he went into hiding after Kaito left. The brunt of the investigation would fall onto Nigel and the rest of the crew and they would likely be tortured to get his and Kaito’s whereabouts.

Poor guy is going to have to find out about all of this in the worst way possible next volume :sob:

That would be amazing, I’d love to see those two interact when they’re not trying to kill each other. I feel like they have the potential to have some kind of frenemy dynamic

I think Kaito mentioned that the next opening would be the spring equinox in the 16th century world but that he likely wouldn’t be able to come back then. Did some googling and apparently tuberculosis treatment takes at least 6 months to complete.

Heeeeh, I feel you. “I’ll be starting volume 15 soon…” It’s like god hears me and laughs before flinging a thunderbolt in my direction. Ah well.

I have a feeling you’re right. :\ As you probably read in the rest of my ranting, Nigel felt shoehorned in in this volume, which felt really odd. Makes me wonder what editorial decisions were behind it.

I’m not much help here, unfortunately; for what it’s worth I think I basically understood things like you did, though I’m pretty fuzzy on how the tunnel accounts for multiple calendars even after their explanations. Your explanation makes sense to me, even if I wonder about the logistics of a random person in the 16th century knowing about one calendar or the other and that triggering the tunnel. But then, thinking about it, that’s also pretty legit trickster fairy magic as well.

I wonder, haha. You’d have a good case for it imo. Isekais don’t generally go to different worldlines, right? So there’s a case to argue that F&B is clearly not the same as the rest of the isekai trash. :sunglasses:

Ah, that’s true. Didn’t think about that.

“Yeah, Geoffrey’s been imprisoned and Kaito disappeared in some random flash of light so you’ll never see either again probably. But chin up! You’re the captain of the Gloria now! :tada:”

It’s been a joy as always, pyororon. ^o^ I look forward to reading vol. 15 with you~ On that front, my current situation is: have two books I need to finish; book #1 I’m about 15 pages away from completing, book #2 I’m listening w/ an audiobook. I’ve got plans this weekend so it’s basically gone. Which is to say, ultimately, I’ll either be able to start F&B15 tomorrow or Friday or next week, I guess? Any definitive time I give I manage to immediately subvert in one way or another. :S Audiobook book I’m not as concerned w/ wrapping up; it hasn’t lingered on the Reading list too long, after all. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s the part that confused me the most. I wonder if we’ll ever get a full explanation for what exactly is going on there or if the time tunnel stuff will be left more vague. There wasn’t much new info about the faeries this time so it’s still a mystery to me how or if they relate to the other calendars. Hopefully Kaito now being able to discuss stuff with Kazuya (assuming he has not actually managed to go through a portal to somewhere) will make some things more clear.

I at least hope that Lily tells him Kaito is coming back :sob:

I’m down to start any of those dates, whichever it ends up being, my schedule is very open right now.
And this time, assuming I don’t accidentally fall into any tunnels to the 16th century, I’ll actually be reading along

Ugh, I hope we figure out what happened with him.

Excellent. :+1: Let’s tentatively say to start on Monday, then?
