Congrats on your purchase. These things generally don’t get a large printing, so you’ve gotta be prepared to grab it once it surfaces I think. ^^;
As mentioned, there are more characters in there (since this Character book was made for the 10 year anniversary! this is one long BL-series! XD), so the story has progressed quite a bit more.
But, mentions of characters that will appear later is a minor spoiler imo.
May I suggest for us to add page numbers when a historical figure, place or event appears/is mentioned in the story, since I have no idea how to guess the actual ordering of appearance in the Wiki. ^^;
(I added a link to a Marco Polo vid on You Tube, discussing the image of Japan as a country of gold )
Edit: page number, chapter and volume is probably for the best now that I think about it! ^^;
Oh, that would be totally awesome! I only added the links to the wikipedia pages after the fact so I did not remember anything about order of appearance and so on. Will do better next time
That makes a lot of sense. Maybe we can order things by volume? Since it is kind of hard to go back and check. And to keep spoilerish info hidden as well for people coming late to the party.
I made a pretty big overhaul of the section, i hope that’s alright. I’ve saved the original order however in a word doc, so it can be reinstated if preferred.
But, basically, I streamlined it all, hiding the links and just generally making it easier to browse (to my mind).
I’ve also put volume 1 under its own details spoiler tag, allowing us to put new stuff under volume 2 and so forth, keeping spoilers contained.
now to continue reading! ^>^
(hopefully I can add where some of these things are mentioned as I read)
Plymouth Hoe is perhaps best known for the probably apocryphal story that Sir Francis Drake played his famous game of bowls here in 1588 while waiting for the tide to change before sailing out with the English fleet to engage with the Spanish Armada.
Just as a note, I’m going to be away on vacation for the next few days, so I’ll probably only do a little bit of stalking here. Since we’re nearing the end of July, I did want to ask you guys if there were any thoughts on when we were thinking of starting book two.
How are we going to read it? I would be in favor of setting a rough start date and then have everybody read the way they want. What do y’all think?
For the start date, I checked my book clubs and the very high-volume Saikawa&Moe book club will end on July 29th and will be replaced by the next Intermediate pick (which is much lower-volume by nature), which opens up a lot of room for reading (before a new book gets added to the pile in the end of August ) so I was thinking of jumping into Flesh&Blood vol. 2 at the end of July / start of August to make good use of this low tide in book clubs, to stick with the theme
What do y’all think? What are your (reading) plans for the summer, and when would be a good time for you to go aboard?
I think this is an excellent idea. I’m also the type to be slow to get going, but once I do, I’m not about to stop now that I’ve got some momentum. Plus, I’m on vacation now so have time to read as I please.
Basically, Flesh & Blood are my only reading plans for the time being, so I have no issues with us moving onto volume 2.
I should most likely have finished vol 1 in time to start vol 2 at the beginning of August if that was the rough start date.
Should 海辺のカフカ continue straight on, I’ll be reading that, and カラフル for another book club (but a pretty slow paced one so no worries there). However I think the next Saikawa and Moe might be above volume 2 of this in my own internal priority list of things I’m impatient to get to, so it might be that I start a little bit later or would also be reading that alongside.
But yeah, cool with the idea of start of August and I’ll join when I get to it!
@ekg Thanks for all the work you put into the nautical terms list! I found it a bit hard to find words in it because the text was a bit unstructured; I’ve turned it into a table and like it much better this way - please tell me what you think! If you don’t like it, I’m happy to change it to something else.
I also discovered the meanings of the words that you marked with ???, added a new word and also fixed one other word (ヤード), and added a few Wikipedia links.
Looking forward to seeing the list grow
Fantastic work! this is so much better! huzzah! I simply was stumped with how to make it work really, since you might not know the reading, or just the English. And in the end, I had to just take note of stuff that I didn’t know since otherwise I simply would forget those 4 ???.
I think this is much easier to work with and hope you all can also add stuff. There was defo vocab I gave up on in the Vol 2, ch 1 at the beginning there.
I’m glad I could help at least in a bit, since I already feel like some of the terminology has been reused. The context might give you and idea, then check the list, and hopefully it helps guide your translation…something along those lines would be neat! ^>^
