Please be extra-mindful of spoilers, as these games become more and more plot-driven it’s important to avoid revealing even minor details of future events, characters and locations. If you’re not sure if something is spoilery or not, better just throws it in a [spoiler] just in case.

Stopping point

After getting the last Dark Crystal and returning to the map.

There are also 2 optional (but highly recommended) dungeons that I cover this week:

  • 幻獣の洞窟
  • シルフの洞窟
More details

Last week we recruited Edge the Shadowhog and explored the Tower of Babil once more. We almost reached the Crystals but had to settle for a tactical retreat on a new ship, the Falcon.

Start by flying the Falcon back to the Dwarf Fortress. Talk to the king and he’ll tell you to go to the Sealed Cave to collect the last Crystal before Golbez manages to make his way there. Surely this time we won’t fail?

Turns out that to reach the cave we need to be able to fly over lava, and the Falcon can’t do that. Explore the castle’s 地下1階 to find someone who will help with that.

Once you have the upgraded Falcon, you can continue the main story by flying straight to the sealed cave to the south, but there’s also some side-content we can do.

トメラの村 〔任意〕

To the very South of the map you can find the village of トメラ:

There you can find some nice treasures and good shop.

鍛冶屋のククロの家〔任意〕

East of Tomera you can find a lone building housing a forge. There isn’t much to do there but collect a few items. If you talk to the people there you should be able to figure out what this place will be for…

幻獣の洞窟〔任意〕

An optional area we can explore this week is a cave on an island West of the Dwarf Castle:

One thing that will make this dungeon a lot easier is having access to Rosa’s レビテト spell (which she learns at level 35). You can cast this on your party from the menu in order to safely walk over the trapped tiles that deal a fairly heavy amount of damage. Note that you’ll have to recast the spell after every level transition.

If you don’t have access to the spell yet, I recommend going to the 封印の洞窟 and explore it until you’ve grinded enough levels.

Once you reach the 幻獣の町, make sure that you collect the Rat’s Tail, it’s going to be useful later.

After that you will be given the opportunity to fight two bosses, which will each grant you a summon. These summons will be required for further sidequests in the upcoming weeks.

There’s also a hidden teleporter in the 地下4階 near a purple-hooded creature that leads to secret treasure:

Then from that area you can teleport directly out of the cave by walking on the tile completely to the south:

This way you won’t have to walk all the way out.

シルフの洞窟〔任意〕

If you go towards the North-West corner of the map, you’ll find another cave:

Inside the cave, you’ll find that you have to use a similar strategy as the 幻獣の洞窟: cast レビテト on your party to neutralize the trapped tiles.

This dungeon is harder to navigate and has stronger enemies than the 幻獣の洞窟, make sure that you’re well prepared before going in. There are a lot of hard-to-find invisible wall leading to good treasures that are almost impossible to figure out in the Super Famicom version. You can find maps here if you want:

Final Fantasy IV Sylph Cave

At the bottom you’ll find a house, make sure to talk to the person in the bed. Then you can take the staircase up to a platform where you’ll find a teleporter that will take you out of the cave.

封印の洞窟

Go to the walled-in cave entrance West of トメラ to reach the Sealed Cave.

Remember that you can cast デジョン with Lydia to exit the cave and rest/restock/save if you need to.

Boss strategy:

As you can guess, you have to defeat the boss quickly or it will start using insta-kill moves. Casting slow on the boss and berserk/haste on your team (using spells or items like 蜘蛛の糸クモのいと and バッカスの酒) is a good idea. The Avenger that you can find in Sylph Cave auto-berserks one of your fighters, so it’s good to have. My overall strategy was to use a 蜘蛛の糸 as early as possible to slow the boss, then berserk Cecil, Kain and Edge, then Haste Rosa and Lydia. The fight was pretty easy that way.

If you find that it’s really too hard and you haven’t done the two optional dungeons yet, it may be a good idea to bail from the cave at this point and do those first. The levels you have gained going down should make those dungeons easier, and the XP and loot you’ll get there will make this boss a lot more approachable.

Once you’re done you can spam デジョン to return to the map.

開発室

There’s an easter egg left by the dev team in the Dwarf Castle, but it’s not available in every version (I think it’s missing from the Pixel Remaster?)

To reach it, you first have to get to the pub that’s located between the two shops:

Then you cross an invisible wall to the right of the entrance:

That leads to to a staircase to the “development room”:

There you can talk with various NPCs representing the developers, and there are easter eggs all over the place:

You can carry the エッチな本 with you for the rest of the game, or use it to trigger a… cutscene?

Spoilers for this week below:

The Warp glitch

There’s actually a glitch that can be exploited in the Super Famicom and PS1 versions of the game to skip the Sealed Cave completely, although by the time you get to this week it’s too late to execute it.

The trick is available just after fighting the marionettes when we first reach the Dwarf Castle. Lydia comes back and saves the party, but Golbez’s hand manages to snatch the Crystal. Then the cutscene brings you back to the throne room.

At this point, as soon as you regain control, if you cast デジョン you’ll be will be warped back to the crystal room. The devs didn’t account for this in the original version, so a crystal will erroneously still be present and you can take it:

Later if you enter the Sealed Cave with the Crystal already in your inventory, the game will think that you have completed the dungeon and trigger the final cutscene, letting you skip the entirety of the dungeon.

Have fun with all the country dialect speaking dwarves fromトメラ!

I really enjoyed that, having in-game dialects. I presume they’re inspired by real Japanese dialects? I forgot to look it up.

I found someone explain a really obscure word as being a northern japanese word for こんな, not even in my dictionaries. But there’s a lot of kansaiben in there too.

I really wish the let you phase through NPCs. I’m just trying to go to a shop and some stupid NPC is in the way and won’t move…

Not sure what version you’re playing, but on the PR walking into them has them move out of the way after a moment!

That did not work in this case, because they just walked into the pathway to the shop!

Also, for the second time (after it happened last week), Cecil got confused and used teleport to escape a battle I had nearly won, losing out on all the exp I would have gotten. Completely insane that the game allows this.

Oh wow, I had no idea that could even happen!! That’s some atrocious luck. Iirc you can snap allies out of confusion in an emergency by hitting them with a physical attack (if you’re faster before their turn comes of course).
The mental image is so funny though.
Confused Cecil’s first reaction is to ditch everyone and run.

Yeah, that does work. I was just worried I’d knock him out.

FF5 has a creative solution to this problem…

Week 8

Quick question.
Why are the levels in dungeons called B1F, B2F..?
F for Floor? B for?

Oh, so that’s what this is for…

This was hilarious :joy:

I liked the wall boss, it seemed obvious to me that the point was that you have to kill it fast before it crushes you, no slow-fighting with taking turns to heal your party here!
I went all in on him, throwing all my shuriken at him and all, and then suddenly I realized that he was quite close and panicked a bit.
What if we were supposed to run away (like a few bosses in previous FF) instead of fighting? What if it was going to crush us no matter how hard we hit and then a cutscene would happen?
Aaah, どうすればいいのか :scream:
This game has messed with my head completely. But oh well, I kept hitting it, I wasn’t missing too much, and it died, phew. Was very proud that we made it and recovered the crystal!
Surely, now, nothing will happen that will make us lose it, right?

Is that what they’re called in your version? In the original they’re called 地下1階、地下2階⋯

I presume the B is for “Below”, standing for 地下.

Levitate is also sometimes useful in battle: it renders you immune to earth magic (like Quake). There’s a spider lady monster in the 幻獣の動物 who spams a quake spell that’s quite powerful, but she becomes completely harmless if you’re floating…

I went through the same mental process but unfortunately I was underleveled and didn’t make it :frowning:

I do appreciate that the devs were a bit nice for once, when the wall reaches your party it doesn’t game-over you, instead it uses an attack that insta-kill one of your fighters, so you can still survive a little longer and hopefully destroy it…

By the way I think B1F, B2F… might be a convention Americans use to denote underground levels for instance in elevators? I think I saw it enough in videogames not to question it.

No, this doesn’t say 131 and 132

Great, one more “in my version” :joy:
The explanation makes sense since in your version it’s ちか!

But is it a Final Fantasy thing to call floors 地下1階、地下2階 or a normal Japanese thing? Seems a bit funny to me with the ちか / “below” term, sometimes they are floor below a building but usually it goes up?

Like on the maps of 変な家, it has 1階、2階 but no 地下

Yeah that’s also what confuses me a bit, we’re not always going down.. But I don’t remember how it was on the Overworld, will have to check again at some point.

Oh neat, also didn’t know that.

RIP! I am VERY overleveled but that’s the way I like it, I let the skill fighting for skilled people :see_no_evil_monkey:
Interesting with the insta-kill attack, didn’t get to see it.

I also have this one from week 2

Let’s look at pictures of Japanese elevators to figure it out:

So, uh, it’s whatever really. The only really consistent thing is that the ground floor is the first floor, like the Americans do.

I think your pictures show nicely that when B is used, it’s only for underground. I feel like it’s always been B in my version, even when going up a mountain

There are so many caves in this game that maybe you mentally added the B where it wasn’t…

Yeah not impossible. I’ll check the mountains when we get access again! (went to watch the JP playthrough video I have but they cut all the dungeons so I can’t tell)
