Please be extra-mindful of spoilers, as these games become more and more plot-driven it’s important to avoid revealing even minor details of future events, characters and locations. If you’re not sure if something is spoilery or not, better just throws it in a [spoiler] just in case.
Stopping point
After finishing the tower dungeon and getting out.
週刊完璧主義通信
There’s a boss early this week that involves dolls. It’s a two-phase boss, but it’s actually possible to dispatch it during the first phase, in which case you may miss the bestiary entry for the 2nd phase. The first phase also uses two types of enemies, I think you may need to defeat at least one of each to get the bestiary entry.
There’s another boss later on that is made up of two creatures, apparently if you want to collect all bestiary entries in some versions you have to defeat the frontmost enemy first, バルナバ so that a new form can appear. I didn’t do that in my playthrough so I can’t confirm… but then again no bestiary for me on the Super Famicom.
The バブイレの塔 dungeon can’t be revisited, so you need to make sure to loot all chests and fill the bestiary if you care about that. Missable bestiary entries if not found this week:
More details
Last week we lost a party member, we failed to stop Golbez and even brought him the last of the Light Crystals. Not great. We did get Kain and Rosa back at least. Now the plan is to find the Dark Crystal (Crystals?) before Golbez can.
Our first stop is アガルトの村, due South from Baron. If you didn’t visit the village after getting the Enterprise, you can take the time to explore the place (the Observatory is worth a detour) but our ultimate objective is the well in the middle. Use the マグマの石 and open a new path. Once you’re ready, board your ship and go explore the underworld. Note that you won’t be able to return to the surface once you’ve entered the hole, make sure that you have no unfinished business before diving in.
Once you regain control you’ll be near a castle, so we may as well start our exploring there. When you want to proceed, go to the throne room.
Once you regain control, you’ll be able to explore the rest of the Castle, and when you’re ready you can talk to a dwarf in the basement who will open the path forward:
Make sure to stock up on some tents and/or cottages before leaving. Also make sure that you have room in your inventory, there’s a lot of loot ahead (you can summon the fat chocobo in the castle if you need to stash some items).
Keep following the path until you reach the tower, then start climbing. Eventually you’ll obtain a key, after that you’ll have to backtrack a couple of levels to return to the locked door and proceed forward. Once you open a locked door, a cutscene will play, afterwards you must go all the way back down the tower.
Once you’re out of the tower, you can save your game on the map.

Spoilers for this week below:
浦島太郎
The off-screen adventure of Lydia in the land of the 幻獣 seems inspired by the old legend of 浦島太郎: Urashima Tarō - Wikipedia
By the way I noticed that リディア is usually translated as Rydia in English, even though it could as easily be the actual name Lydia. I think this continues the trend of English translators trying to avoid common Western names in order to adhere to the usual Fantasy trope of coming up with less common, often unique in-universe names. We had an example of this in FF2: the 竜騎士「リチャード」 became “Ricard” in English instead of the straightforward “Richard” (admittedly could also have been a character restriction constraint originally).
This trend of “weirdification” of common names is going to continue in future games, for instance in FF6 ティナ becomes Terra in the English versions. And of course there’s the whole Earith thing in FF7, but we’ll talk about that in due time…
Amusingly the Magus Sisters last week follow the opposite pattern: they’re called ドグ、マグ、ラグ in Japanese and Sandy, Cindy, Mindy in English. I guess it fits with them being a bit of a joke boss.
