Please be extra-mindful of spoilers, as these games become more and more plot-driven it’s important to avoid revealing even minor details of future events, characters and locations. If you’re not sure if something is spoilery or not, better just throws it in a [spoiler] just in case.

Stopping point

After you get the Falcon.

週刊完璧主義通信

There are some unique monsters in this week’s section of the Tower of Babil:

Not all enemies are available on all levels, and some are apparently only available after defeating the boss.

More details

Last week we attempted to prevent Golbez from gathering the Dark Crystals, with rather poor results. Yan and Cid are dead, Golbez has the Crystals, but we did get Lydia back in adult form, so that’s cool. What’s next? Well, let’s head back to Baron for a start. There you can explore the castle and you’ll find somebody who will offer to pimp your ride:

Now you can use the enterprise to carry the overcraft around. It should be where you left it, North-East of Damacian, next to the ホブスの山.

You can use this to reach a cave West of エブラーナ城. If you haven’t explored the castle itself already, consider doing that now, there’s some decent gear.

At any rate once you’re ready, go explore the cave and find the 抜け道 that leads back to the Tower of Babil. Go through the tower until you get the Falcon, then save on the map.

We already had the Enterprise, now our new ship is the Falcon. Those are references to Star Trek (the USS Enterprise) and Star Wars (the Millennium Falcon)

日サロに行って肌を焼く

That was incredible…literally. But, I didn’t see any 手裏剣.

Week 7

Alright going right back to the tower is kind of an odd decision, and at this point I’ll agree we’re repeating the tower techno tileset a little much.

Still had a decent time though, the crane to pick up the old ship is cute and the tower is fun enough in the way they’ve been. Occasionally enemies just outright one shot us now but given that revive magic is so easy to use I don’t really mind.

Most importantly we got a ninja named Edgy, which is really what any videogame ninja should be called. I liked his parents appearing as twisted monsters. Unfortunately I had already cast berserk on a few people so we simply could not stop beating them while they had their tearful goodbye.

The real boss was fun! Decent enough gimmick with the timing; they’re making the most of having their battles be a little more “real time” with ATB. Defeating him and having our big triumphant moment where we celebrate and talk about how we’re going to be able to handle anything and then immediately falling in a hole is genuinely really funny; that one worked.

I actually did the same thing, but only on Edge, so he kept bullying his dying parents.

Week 7

Didn’t remember this part of the game, when I found some shuriken in a chest I got excited, oh we might get a ninja in the party!
Then got confused that said ninja couldn’t equip the shuriken. Ah right, you’re suppose to throw them, oops, forgot that detail :see_no_evil_monkey:

Week 7

When they said the vehicles would 合体, I wasn’t imagining carrying the hovercraft around like a UFO catcher.

Edge is uh… Quite a character. He definitely would’ve been my favorite if I had played the game as a kid, but he’s a bit hard to take seriously now. The 忍術 is fun though and it already taught me a few new words. I forgot to try his なげる command, so I’ll see how that works next week.

I missed whatever the trick was with the boss and just kinda plowed through. I assume I wasn’t supposed to attack when he did his little cape animation? I burned through a couple of Phoenix Downs tanking his single-target flame attack, but otherwise got through fine.

I finished this week in 1:49, for a total playtime of 18:33.

He becomes immune to ice spells when hiding behind the cape (he’s weak to it the rest of the time).

I think he counter-attacks when not hiding behind the cape.

Overall I find that this game abuses counter-attack and “state change” gimmicks on bosses, especially given that there’s a delay for spells, summons and Kain’s jump, so it’s hard to time commands precisely. It makes fights messy.

I dunno if I think they do the state changes too much, maybe, but I get that it’s something cool they thought they could do with ATB.

Pretty sure I think the delayed timing aspect is really good though, personally. Without that you just figure out the gimmick and then it’s 100% solved. Here there’s still a little extra skill factor and chance for it to go wrong so it’s not solely a really basic knowledge check.

Oh also, is it ice only? I assumed it was all magic and played that way.

You might be right because I remember him absorbing thunder at some point during my fight. Didn’t try with fire though, since at the first encounter with Edgy he mentions that fire does nothing to him.

Let’s just say that I’ve been preplaying the next two weeks of FF4 and also the first two weeks of FF5 over the past few days and it probably contributed to my “counterattack fiesta and phase change every two turns” exhaustion.

It does make fights more dynamic at least.
